  • The Chicago Street Race is back for a second year and with it come big questions for the short and long term. This race can set the tone for NASCAR street races in the future, as well as what the Chicago market’s response to NASCAR is for the long haul. Maybe even the possibility of being back at the Chicagoland Speedway. This is why the 2024 Chicago street race is more important than last year.

    I would only support brimging Chicagoland back as a part of a double-header with the street course. The season is too long to spend two weeks in Chicago when we can easily do a double-header, and we really should keep doing the street course to keep NASCAR and stock car racing as a whole mainstream. Too many times has stock car racing been screwed over by being a booming real estate market: AutoClub, Nashville Fairgrounds and many historic South Carolina tracks to name a few. We need to keep fighting to maintain our spot in the sports world

    TBH, I was VERY cynical about the Chicago race. I expected a procession of drivers who were completely out of their comfort zone, who would struggle to gauge the limits of both the cars and track, with the only passing being via accident, or pit work. Then I heard that SVG had signed up to race. That changed everything, as it meant there was a known benchmark driver in the field. Yes, I kinda expected SVG to get pole, run off into the distance, and totally dominate the weekend, but that was mainly due to having watched him do so in the Aussie Supercars series for much of the past decade. To see that SVG wasn't on pole, and that the race was likely to be wet, well that took the race from a "might watch" to a "will watch", and it was the first NASCAR race I watched live in... a good few years. (Being in the UK, watching races live is a pain, with most starting around midnight.)
    For this second year, seeing that there's a 30+% chance of rain, I'm not sure what to hope for. Rain races are always entertaining, but I'd like to see how the circuit races in the dry as well. Eh, I dunno.
    As for the race staying in Chicago, I'm fine with that if the city wants it. Or I'd be fine if the race moved to another city, just as long as there's a street race. For NASCAR to expand it's markets outside the USA, it needs to do more than just ovals, and street courses are a common thing elsewhere in the world. To the average European or Asian motorsports fan, seeing a NASCAR blatting down a city street is MUCH more relatable than seeing one on an oval, largely because we've all driven in city streets. It's an environment we understand, and can envision the difficulty involved in racing in that environment, unlike racing on an oval. And with that understanding, comes appreciation of the skills shown, and a potential for greater interest in the sport as a whole. NASCAR needs a street circuit to expand its reach on the global motorsports stage. More eyes watching attracts more sponsors, even if those eyes aren't all in the USA...

    Best case scenario long term, July 4th weekend becomes NASCAR's annual street course race where they go to the biggest cities in the country to race. I'd say a street race should either get 2-4 years on the schedule before going to another city, or at some point if we're lucky we can get a consistent rotation of cities where lets say we'd go to Chicago once every 4 years with 3 other cities filling the gap. I just hope NASCAR doesn't get too crazy with it by adding a bunch of street courses to the schedule. I'd be fine with 2 but 1 is perfectly fine.

    I definitely agree that this year's Chicago street race is more important than last year's simply because of the fact that it will show if the event is sustainable long term. I think the outreach that NASCAR has done with the local community has helped change people's views on the event & is the complete opposite of how F1 has approached their street race in Vegas where there has been zero outreach with locals. Instead most people in Vegas absolutely hate F1 with a passion mainly because F1 has created an absolute traffic nightmare with all of the construction that is being done for the race & has negatively affected people's ability (especially those who work on the Strip) to get to work on time and make a living. This is in addition to the astronomical ticket prices which will prevent many locals from attending. Because of all this, it is very possible that the Chicago street race for NASCAR will outlast the Vegas F1 race as I see F1 cutting their losses after this year & giving the Vegas date to one of two destinations in Southeast Asia, Thailand (at the same track MotoGP races on) or a return to the Sepang circuit in Malaysia next year.

    Last years race at Chicago wasn't bad but I do believe it was good because you have a lot of different elements that made last years race not a normal nascar road course race so basically the weather and then that leads me to my final point is I don't think every race there will have the same weather like last year. Long story short if this weekend's race isn't good like last year and the weather is good and clear or some clouds but no rain and it's another normal road course race then that means that's why last years race was good because of many different things that played a effect during last years race. My biggest concern is and is why I don't like it it's the stress of this event nascar is on a tight schedule to get the race done because they got to clean everything up and reopen that part of Chicago to the public

    I would love it if Nascar would extend the contract after this year for 2 more years or continue the tradition for the Chicago Street race and bring a truck series to our Chicago City streets. Just wish their tickets were not so expensive for middle - and lower class fans could afford to attend to draw more fans back to Nascar in the Midwest and Chicago racing. Now that other experienced USA drivers want to win this race to beat a rookie Australian driver, Shane van Gisbergen, to keep him from winning again in 2024 race. Chicago Street race. Should be mostly dry weather. If it rains, they are predicting a short shower and clears for rest of the race into Sunday evening. Dry streets could make this race really competitive, and driver conserving fuel to get to the lead and keep it from Gisbergen. If we have a short shower during the race that could change the outcome of this race very quickly. Should be fun to watch. I would love them to bring a truck series street race to Chicago Streets that would be exciting as well. I am sure their biggest viewing of this race is gong to be watched on NBC5 tv channel and streaming on Peacock much cheaper, world wide car racing fans will be watching and you can see every turn with more camera's they said they added 100 cameras to the race track this year. It will be the biggest watched race this weekend more than ever to see if Gibergen can repeat a win? I think the Chicago Street Race is great, it's one of many recent examples of NASCAR trying to expand beyond its comfort zone to try something new and bring in a new audience. The fact that they brought back North Wilksboro Speedway from the dead to host the All Star Race from 2023, possibly in reaction to the disastrous staging of that race at Texas in 2022, shows that they're trying to appeal ti the sport's history as well.
    Having said that, history has shown that success is never guaranteed when trying something new long term. I hope that NASCAR's only Street Race can remain not only as a popular venue, but that its attendance grows or at least is stable from last year's first running, to this year. Hi from the other side of the world. Im an f1 fan and the chicago GP is litterly the only nascar race i want to see. Ofc i sometimes watch Highlights but im hyped for chicago. They should race tho under the street lights just after sunset. Would be awsome pictures. Saddly i can only watch the Highlights but last years gp was awsome. Plus obviosly the rain isnt there this year (probably) but i still think that it has the Potential to be a good race there. I wish indycar would Race there. Speaking of indycar, the old music city gp, there was a fanatac gt Race at Sunset, it looked stunning, i hope we see more races like this at a time where the sun is set but it isnt dark yet, plus the lights from the city, plus tracks like chicago and nashville, i just wished f1 would go there but thouse guys have a weird habbit of first of all, having weird street races and the secound thing is, there sponsors and safety standards make the tracks look kinda the same. Probably would look like baku than, i mean i get it they are in the end the fastest cars on earth but still, the sponsors like aramco and they remove a lot of the paint from the road and we dont etc, everything looks the same but we still love it. Anyways, nascar and chicago is a must, lets watch the guys who turn left turn right.

Why do we need these politicians to chose what they want? People want the Chicagoland Speedway back. As I know. Nobody asked for racing on the streets of Chicago. Give the fans what they want. Don’t do something because you think it will grow a fan base. You’re losing your fan base when you are doing the opposite on what you are doing!..

    • @My.Australian.cattle.dog.
      @My.Australian.cattle.dog. Před 4 dny +2

      @pjartistics I'm a resident of Adelaide in South Australia. We have a Supercars race here that a previous government cancelled and even started selling off the infrastructure. The next State election, saw the opposing political party/candidate vow to have the race returned to our city. Consequently, they won the election. The cancellation was to appease those who whined about the disruption to their selfish little narrowminded lives, however the population in general realised the economic boost the event provides, and showed that at the polls. From what I saw of last year's Chicago race, or at least the best intentions of the organisers, it was to be a festival of motor racing supported by side gigs of music and other entertainment. Unfortunately, the weather seemed to put limits on this. 2024, weather permitting, stands to be a resounding success. This is exactly how our event is held. Racing by day, and music concerts by night. static displays and carnival style rides and activities. Other categories such as Stadium Trucks, stunt riders and Drag racing have been supports in the past and will be again. A new attraction for 2024 is to build a Speedway track within the street circuit arena and hold a Sprintcar event also. We also have a dedicated track located not too far from the city. It also hosts rounds of the Supercars series, however those events mainly cater for the traditional motorsport enthusiast, as it's a traditional closed road race track and that's great too. The atmosphere created at both venues determines the crowd they attract. Many of the Street race spectators are first time attendees, and after experiencing the event, become fans of the sport. It serves as a vehicle to attract and maintain a broader fan base. Just my 2 cents worth but maybe there's scope to hold both types of event in your city/area, so motorsport fans, and many others can get a taste, and if run correctly, provide a significant economical contribution to the district.

    I think that the whole "street course" idea isn't built for these current cars. Heck it wasn't built for any of the cars in the last 65 years. To me the Chicago Street Race has the same issues the Monaco Grand Prix in F1 has. The cars are too big while at the same time the track is too small which makes passing limited and genuinely not as fun to watch. Honestly I think Nascar needs to look at how they historically ran street courses and take a similar approach if they want to keep running one. Otherwise they should go back to running on the 4th of July and find some rundown speedway like Willow Springs or Augusta.

One spot (no more no less) should be a street race to cater to a younger crowd but more importantly, keep NASCAR from being marginalized by booming real estate among other things.
