My FAVORITE Mid-Summer PANFISH RIG!!

  • HELLO and WELCOME to another SHOP TALK video! This week, I'm running through my FAVORITE mid-summer panfish rig of all time - the "Monona Rig" or "Gene Rig", or "100 different names for the same thing" rig. Although it's super simple, this rig consistently puts big, sometimes finicky, panfish in the boat. Live bait, plastics, even trout flies work great on this rig, and we catch so much more than just panfish on it, too! (PSSSTT....it works great for super finicky walleyes).
The real keys to this simple rig are:
    - Slightly opening the bend of the jig to increase the size of the hook gap (makes a BIG difference)
    - Using Fluorocarbon or a Co-Polymer line for your leader (the little over hand knots that naturally form in the leader will, over time, cut the line if you use monofilament)
Want some Willy Worms and the jigs I used? : ‪@dsbaittackleflyshop‬

What a fun video. Cool rig as well. Good info for the future. I understand your excitement when they bite like that. Awesome. I took a young man fishing locally today. We kept 9 very nice bluegill for dinner and put back 2 @ 9.5”, 3 @ 9.75”, and 1 @ 10”. What fun! Note to your viewers: Help keep our fisheries great. Let the big ones go to keep the gene pool great. Thanks. God Bless!

I use a 4mm tungsten jig and a 1" gulp minnow. 6'10" medium light extra fast action #4 fluorocarbon. No hardware(swivel, sinker, stop, leader) Gulp is good for 10-50 panfish per minnow. Gets deep quickly with 100% more feel sensitivity and jig control.

Blue Gills can be very light biters at times, and unless you have an extra limp rod tip you will never see those bites! Wire bobbers when ice fishing are the ticket, but what about summer time fishing? Great video by the way 👍!

I use the Improved Clinch Knot from my fly fishing for all my other fishing needs, it helps the hooks, jigs, lures, and spinners work better when hooking fish and I lose less gear when I get hung up on rocks and logs. And catching bluegill on flies is alot of fun too! (Hopper patterns)!!!

Before Monona Terrace was around everyone use to park along the lake and catch white bass with what i think they were call "pinky rigs."

I bank fish and the rig I use in the summer is a panfish popper fly on that same rig with either the gulps you mentioned or the 1" gulp minnows or waxies. I go a little heavy on the egg sinker for casting distance (and a shorter leader) then tight line it and I get one after another, usually all decent size and yes, an occasional bass or cat is possible.

Great description of the rig and showing how to tie them up. I love to add beads between the weight and the swivel and I only do about a 4 to 6 inch leader of 4 pound test, just like I do with the Mendota rig and the pencil sinker. I get less tangles, I think, with the shorter leader length and the beads only add to the attraction of the rig. I did a video with my buddy a few years ago out there on how I fish them and we pounded them that day!
