  • I take a look at Disney / Pixar's TOY STORY spin-off, LIGHTYEAR!
    "The definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, Lightyear follows the legendary Space Ranger after he is marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he is joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda."
    Starring Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, and Taika Waititi

    I think the biggest missed opportunity is that since this is supposed to be a movie Andy sees in 1995, they could’ve had a ton of fun making this like a mid 90s movie. You could’ve had so much fun sort of lovingly homaging The visuals, styles, and music of the time period. But instead they wanted to make a generic sci-fi movie that is made in the 2020s.

    • @lamontyaboy718
      @lamontyaboy718 Před 2 lety +7

      It really seems like they just wanted to simply make a movie about Buzz Lightyear and only after it was done was when the idea came to them to connect it to the Toy Story universe by making it a movie-within-a-movie that came out before the events of the Toy Story franchise. Honestly it's a cool idea but I'd rather they had not made that connection cause this is not believable as a '90s film.

      Considering it’s from 1995, I think it’s baffling, because there’s just no way we’d ever see a hit blockbuster film featuring accepting gay characters in that time. Especially if it was like a kids film, parents from 1995 would be outraged. For that reason, it really doesn’t feel like an actual 1990’s movie

      If the movie was exactly the same but more visually akin to 90s (or later 80s since it's a mid 90s movie) sci-fi films, I think I would've enjoyed it a lot more. Even with the film spelling out to the audience at the start that this is a movie from 1995, after a few minutes it just felt like a 2020s sci-fi film. Nothing in the movie screamed "this was made in 1995" to me. I really wish they played more with the aesthetics and visual style- the original Buzz Lightyear was modeled after 50s sci-fi, so maybe using 50s futurism could've been neat too.

    I have mixed feelings about “Lightyear“. Parts of it are great. There are stunning visuals and some exciting action scenes. But Buzz Lightyear’s character arc is pretty clichéd - Buzz has to learn he can’t do it alone and has to work with his friends - and the way it’s presented is pretty heavy-handed. At one point, midway through the film, a character straight-up tells Buzz, “You don’t need to save us. You need to join us.”
    And then, in case you missed it, the film repeats that point, again and again.
    It’s the same message you can find in an run-of-the-mill film. And that’s the problem. Pixar does not usually write for children. Compare this to the message in Ratatouille, for example: “Not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.”
    This movie might entertain children, but it doesn’t give adults anything to think about.
    Buzz deserved much better.

    Honestly, I think a story more interesting would have been about Woody: Pixar telling the story of him, his early days when, apparently, he was the toy of Andy's dad and the movie would tell about the story of his dad, what happen to him, how Woody arrived to Andy's hands, what about the Woody's series in the 60s (even, the story could incorporate another characters like Jessie and all the crew of the series). The thing is Toy Story is a respected saga so I think too many people expected more in this movie but it's a little bit disappointing. Yeah, the story is good and it has a nice message but no more. It's not the movie you'll remember after few months or you want to watch again... anyway, great review Dave!💫

    To me, the first half is actually one of the best moments Pixar has done. My problem is when the "new" characters like Taika Waititi and that older lady show up. There is a portion of the movie, where they are getting to know each other that, frankly, were really boring to me personally. I would rather have it be Sox, Alecia & Buzz by themselves. I also really liked the third act with Zurg etc, thought all of it was pretty decent. Just a whole lot of middle movie.
    I actually feel incredible empathy for the makers behind this movie as I think they made this with such good intentions, unfortunately the internet in 2022 is such a wild west factor that literally anything can happen to any movie.

    I kind of felt the same, the movie is definitely fun, but it did had a feeling that I wish it could've been better. And yet that movie is getting more better reviews compared to Jurassic World. Yet ironically the audience score is more better compared to the critical reception. But then again it doesn't help that there's still a huge divide between how the general audiences see movies vs critics see them. Sure some audience become critics eventually, but does it make us question on did we loss something when changing perspectives? Since the general audience usually comes just for fun and escapism, while the reviewers are more analytical and breaking it down piece by piece since they have more experience in film grammar or story analytics. While there are a few that do make good points of using film as an art form and a way to teach us about something, sadly most people don't like to be talked down to and to them feels like it's making something fun into a boring chore.

    In my ideal scenario this would be a movie that tied to the Star Command series and expanded the established in-universe franchise of the Toy Story world. However, when I saw the marketing I got the impression that they were selling it as it's own thing. As you described it, more grounded and toned down. Even though that wasn't what I wished it to be, they got my respect for doing something completely different and I went into the theatre expecting a movie very loosely based on the established material. I didn't even expect Zurg to show up. I was totally on board with it until about Zurg's entrance. Then I was so positively surprised and the more references the movie fed me, the more I actually started to hope for it to be my ideal Buzz Lightyear movie. Than the twist happened and the rest of the movie neither felt like the grounded, loosely based unique take on the materal or the expanded tie-in to the old stuff I was a fan of. And despite that I really liked most of the movie as a single film, I left the theatre thinking more about what it wasn't as a part of the whole franchise. Even if the Star Command series was a reboot of this movie in the Toy Story universe, the movie was still too modern-styled written to be from pre-1995. If they hadn't claimed it was from when Andy was small, it would've stood better on its own. The founding of the Galactic Alliance also felt a bit forced in for reference when there never really was an encounter with another civilization through the whole movie. Just humans and their robots. Who did they form the alliance with? It felt like this movie didn't really know what it wanted to be, which is a shame because if they just picked one version and stuck with it they would surely pull it off perfectly and make atleast one part of the audience really happy.

    I think this video summed up my thoughts pretty well- the movie wasn't awful, but for a movie about space, it felt very grounded. The quirky underdog team were all archtypes we've seen before, the quippy humor is the kind we've all gotten used to in movies since Shrek, and this movie really had the habit of undercutting emotional moments with humor, as a lot of movies do nowadays. It's almost like they're too afraid to go too long without a joke in fear of losing the audience? Or they're afraid to take themselves too seriously? I'm not sure.
    Overall, this movie wasn't as bad as I was expecting (the later trailers really made me worry), but it didn't reach the heights of recent Pixar films like Luca and Turning Red. I think Pixar is at its best when it's telling original stories that try to do something new- which Lightyear isn't.

    Haven't seen it yet, but I plan to in the upcoming week. Not sure why people would be confused by it though. I perfectly understand what I will be seeing from the marketing. It does look like fun escapism entertainment, which is why I liked Jurassic World Dominion. I feel people overthink a lot of movies nowadays and it is a shame that we can't just go in to a theater and be grateful for an escape from the reality of the world.
    EDIT: Finally saw it and I have to say I rather enjoyed it. I thought it had some really clever moments in it and overall was a fun sci-fi movie. Personally, I think it's getting torn apart unfairly, but hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

    For me, I was going to see it: but the reviews are incredibly mixed so I’m probably going to sit it out (for reasons in tone etc. touched on in the video). I’m also tired of Disney oversaturating the market with their IP in sequels, prequels, live-action remakes, spin-offs and theme park shoe-horns. It reeks of corporate Iger and Chapek at its finest, especially in how the corporation has been heading overall since the pandemic began. But if it means getting corporate to keep releasing Pixar films in theatres they way they do for their own studio animation department, I will go see this one in theatres….just at a matinee next weekend LOL

    Old Buzz said he borrowed or in other words stole the future tech when he went far into the future & found Technology you couldn’t believe.he climbed up & used the Zurg suit, that’s why the robots kept calling him Zurg. It wasnt because they couldn’t say Buzz. Meaning he wasn’t Zurg but there is a Zurg out there.

    Personally I really enjoyed this movie overall. It definitely wasn’t great by any means, especially when you look at the critic rating on rotten tomatoes, and certainly doesn’t march the quality of storytelling compared to the original toy story movies, but I still really enjoyed it overall. Definitely had a lot of clever jokes thrown in for good measures too.

    From day one I wasn't sold on this movie the trailers didn't look interesting at all not the settings, the characters which I really think the advertising treated badly because in the movie Buzz is traveling with 3 other characters but in the marketing they only focus on Buzz and the black girl and the other two guys are just completely ignored. I think Disney & Pixar relied too much on people wanting to watch this movie just because it's a Toy Story spinoff about Buzz.
    I really don't feel bad that this movie is failing I hope this is the last Toy Story related movie and that they leave the franchise alone because the 3rd movie is where it should've ended. This should've been an animated short.

  • @powerviolentnightmare5026

    Pixar made a wrong turn with this film. They attempted to create a backstory for a child's toy and they failed. To me, those who were on the Story Board took everybody's ideas, accepted them all, and threw them in a pot. And whatever came out, that is what was published. I'm just going to wait for Lightyear to be released on Disney+. I've read too many mixed reviews that would not want me to open my wallet and buy a $10.00 ticket.

    My question isn't so much "why doesn't Andy have any of the other toys?" He likes Buzz, his mom bought him Buzz. Simple. He didn't even get a Zurg so it's not like he was interested in having a set. My question would be why other characters besides Buzz and Zurg don't exist in toy story. Since we see the Buzz Lightyear aisle in Al's toy barn and there are no other toys. Particularly that super marketing cat.
    It might have been a better move to make Lightyear its own movie with nods to Toy Story rather than retroactively connecting them. (Or forcing them together) because it's much more enjoyable if you forget about Toy Story and just appreciate it for the movie it is, instead of the movie it's trying to be.

    • @DaveLeeDownUnder
      @DaveLeeDownUnder  Před 2 lety

      This has been adressed by the filmmakers (in the tweets I showed in the video). In their mind the toys in the movies were based on a cartoon spin-off of the movie that featured different characters.
      The Star Command series is 20 years old and I’ve never heard anyone raise this issue about the characters from that show.
      That said, the more you think about it and the more forced explanations were given, the more needlessly complicated it becomes. So I certainly agree with you on that.

    I think this is probably Pixar's greatest flop since Cars 2. Audiences don't like it and it's not making any money.
    To be honest though, I'm personally not impressed with Pixar at the moment. Too many sequels and too many bad ideas. They've done some great work recently (like Soul, Finding Dory and Turning Red) but it kinda feels to me like the studio is losing its identity and I hope that they do reach that golden era again between '95 and 2010.
