And to answer anyone's question, why bagpipes are played at police and firefighter funerals is because it's teadition. most firefighters and police officers at the time when they all were first found where Irish and Scottish and so on because nobody else would do it due to the dangers. it's carried over through tradition.

Thank you for the explanation. I've always wondered why bagpipes are played at police officer's or fire fighter's funerals.

FDNY has a pipe band because for a long time the New York City area had many people of Irish descent, and it was reflected in the makeup of the FDNY, not because "no one else would do it". LAFD in recent years decided to copy them. Also, in 1963 slain LAPD officer Ian Campbell had one (1) piper at his funeral (provided by a friend) because he had played the pipes and was of Scottish heritage. Well, solely because of the book and movie about Campbell's death, LAPD eventually formed a pipe band in the 1990s, and I believe this also had something to do with the LAFD forming one. The whole thing is dumb, frankly. I can sort of understand the guys back East doing it, but for the L.A. bunch to do it is just dumb. This isn't the British Isles...

I retired from the fire dept 8 years ago after a 27 year career. I loved everything about the job-the sense of duty, the excitement, the adrenaline rush, the fire trucks, and most of all, my brother firefighters. My nephew is currently serving in the same fire dept, and working with many of the guys I served with.
The LAFD did a fine job respecting the service of their lost comrade.

I am the wife of a CT firefighter and sometimes attending a firefighter funeral or just watching one reminds me of just how fragile life can be... I would be lying if I said I didn't worry about this happening to my own husband but I cannot dwell on it or it would drive me crazy... No...I knew what I was getting into when I married him...this is who he is... He has been a firefighter 30+ years...and the truth is I am very proud of him... I just pray that something like this never becomes my reality...

Not sure either why Bagpipes would be selected across the US to be played at all Police and Firefighter funerals, I know a lot of Irish came to the Northeastern US during the potato famine in Ireland, and a lot of Scots came to the Carolinas after the Jacobite rebellion of '45, but somehow it has become a tradition.

George Tunstill An architect-homeowner was sentenced to one year in county jail -- 168 days of which have already been served -- and three years of probation after pleading no contest in the case of a firefighter killed in a 2011 fire at a Hollywood Hills home.
Thirty-six year Los Angeles Fire Department veteran Glenn Allen, 61, died after a ceiling collapse inside the custom-built Viewsite Drive home during the February 2011 fire.
A nearly year-long investigation by Los Angeles City Fire Department's arson investigation team, the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division and other agencies led to an involuntary manslaughter charge against Gerhard Becker, 49, whose house was to be featured in the show "Germany's Next Top Model." The investigation concluded the fire was started by a "negligently installed" fireplace inside the home that was designed for outdoor use.

Our local Police and Fire Dept's have lost more members on duty in the last 15 years (20 total) Than all other dept's combined ( ie: water and power, sanitation, building and safety, etc. etc.) Also not told is how firefighters die more often, and younger, of job related cancers associated with exposure to toxins. This man died having more than 30 years of service to his department, working to save lives and property, only days away from his retirement, and only 1 day before the birth of his first grandchild. Nothing in bad taste or over the top about honoring a hero who gave his life in the line of duty. I was there, his family and those of us in attendance don't share your opinions. It is a hallowed tradition to honor fallen firemen, cops, and military members who die in the line of duty this way. You may have your traditions, we have ours. RIP Glenn

As a former firefighter myself I'll give you a strong piece of advice, " Don't try to be a hero." Good luck and be safe my brother and watch over the backs of your comrades.

Over the years as more and more races were mixed into the field, the pipes were continued as a tribute to their fallen brother and sisters. Hope this helps.

Well, it's part of the American fire dept tradition. Originally, most firemen were Irishmen who migrated here. It was a job fit only for Irishmen and poor class.

its the truth we use "your" traditions you hate us, we change the same tradition in some way you hate us. I mean good god man lol, do you hate us for taking some of your foods too? lol, yes obviously we aren't getting anywhere but most irish men ive talked too found it honorable that their music was being played all around the world, why cant you do the same?
