For anyone who's wondering, that underwater hamster cage is indeed abuse. 450 square inches of unbroken floor space in the minimum in the U.S and Canada, and the minimum is higher in other countries. On top of that, hamsters need daily exercise outside their cage, and that would be nearly impossible with an underwater enclosure. Hamsters also need a properly sized wheel, and at least 6 inches of bedding for them to properly burrow. Neither of those necessities are available in a cage like that. Also, I couldn't tell from the photo, but the air circulation in that cage must be terrible. Hamsters have very sensitive respiratory systems and any ammonia build-up would cause a respiratory infection and eventually pneumonia. Hamsters also need a regular day and night cycle, and the tank light might make that difficult. And, hamsters like to live in 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, and depending on the temperature of the water, that might not be achievable. temperature fluctuations can be fatal and low temperatures may cause a hamster to go into torpor. Torpor is almost always fatal in domestic animals. There are countless other reasons a hamster shouldn't live like that, but this is all I could think of off the top of my head.
@Le BaguetteYeah, I don't know which type of self awareness that dude was talking about, but hamsters are definitely aware of their surroundings. They will show signs of stress if they aren't being cared for properly, and they will show signs of pleasure when they are happy. They are a lot more intelligent than we give them credit for. If he means self aware as in psychologically, I know a lot of humans who aren't self aware in that way. And even if hamster just sat there and existed, I would still think it's wrong to experiment on a living being. Especially an experiment that would result in the animal drowning or suffocating if something goes wrong. The fact that he was defending animal abuse really bugs me.

Yesterday I had to watch a petco employee explain to a couple that two feeder goldfish would not work for their 5 gallon tank. The couple seemed very confused as to how two small fish would get very big if they were allowed to.
The recommended space for a hamster is at least 450 square inches of floor space. Which means you would need a standard 40 Gallon Breeder Tank or above to create enough floor space for hamster. This is why a lot of people that keep hamsters tend to recommend bin cages. After all, you can buy a large bin from Wal-Mart for $30 - $40. After that you then proceed to cut holes into the sides and lid and install hardware cloth to cover up the openings. You can then cut a hole or create a small slice into the bin to install a water bottle.

@Le Baguette oh, really? Omg Hamsters are really active. They will get stressed and sick under those circumtances. Hope those guys that where trying to justify don't have hammys. She wants to put a feeder goldfish in a bowl on the kitchen counter and absolutely will not listen to me when I tell her it’s a terrible idea. It is so sad to see all these fish crammed in these really bad tanks. I am planning on getting a gulper catfish pretty soon and I’m giving it a 40 gallon tank. Reid Lochmiller got that Lego Yoda tho
My friend told me she went to a Petco, the same one I went to with the best employees I've met, but apparently they must not have had those employees because she was getting a sponge (or something) to decrease the flow in her filter for her betta fish; the worker told her that Betts fish don't need a filter in the first place....
I miss the two employees I trust :(
