    I love my H2. I think Cycleops/Saris has always been underrated. Great quality and great piece of kit. I did pay $1200 last autumn tho!! I am glad they dropped the price....i hope the others follow. More people riding and benefiting from indoor training the better for all of us. Thanks Lama for another brilliant review. You are our Guru!!!

    Thanks Shane, great review! So much so this was the reason why I recently purchased the H3 myself (£850 from JE James Cycles) so thank you! I can confirm the cadence issue has been fixed via a firmware update. No lag or inaccurate data is transmitted which I am pleased about. Recent firmware updates since your review are below:
    2019-12-18 - 31.062: Minor change to coast detection
    2019-10-29 - 31.060: Improved cadence. Rolling resistance adjustment. Power calculation during coasting to match simulated resistance
    The H3 is a fantastic piece of kit, absolutely no complaints from me.

    Thanks Shane for your review which convinced me to purchase this trainer in early March in Europe, a few weeks later the price shot up by Euro 200. The covid-19 lockdown caused a run on smart trainers! I've been generally pretty pleased. At times it does emit some funny squeaking sounds. One small fault is that using an11 speed cassette, a long cage Ultegra derailleur jockey wheel axle will come up against the plastic case in the lowest gear. This transmits drivechain vibration to the trainer. Have used it on virtual Rouvy AR rides, at times very successfully, other times a disaster but that's a problem with Rouvy, still quite buggy. Works well in ERG mode using a Garmin 520 set on indoor trainer mode. Will try BigRing once my ANT dongle arrives.

    Finally a new Model. I had the H2 and with my MTB on it Non-Stop Problems with Overheating(H1 had some customers from me and they sold the trainer after some miles even with an update it was the overheating)
    So i thought the H2 solved all the problems but before i'm starting to sell it in the Store i'll give it a try for myself......good thing i have done that.... I couldn't even climb at some point the Road-to-sky(Zwift) with having 3-4 stops and a dropping resistance. Support was even for a Shop Owner not great. Told me to try there own Program instead of Zwift for proper riding and blamed the overheating issues on the High Resistance from Zwift and my cadence up with the MTB. H2 definitely not made for riding with the MTB on it you need an Roadbike it seems like.
    Looking forward to something new from Tacx :)

My thru axle allows the handle to rotate freely when pulled out (I suspect yours acts the same to allow positioning the handle correctly when on a the bike). Hi Shane
    First, thanks for the great content you deliver.
    1. I`d like to hear your recommendation on the Saris H3 and Kickr core. Which one would you suggest for the `heavy duty` user. That means both intense racing and structured training.
    2. And an additional sub-question: Would you go for the kickr climb module or do you prefer sarises moving platform?
    Regards and keep up the great work

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 4 lety +2

      1 - At this point in time, whatever is in stock. We expect all trainers to be sold out very soon. For me, I'd take the CORE over the H3. But there's not a lot in that race to be honest. The CORE is based on the previous Kickers (well proven) and now has accurate cadence. The H3 is still a great unit if that's what you go with. The cadence on the H3 is erratic in some SIM scenarios. The Hammers also get HOT and need active cooling if you're a watt monster.
      2 - Both... or neither. I could go either way. I do like the Kickr BIKE for tilt though.

    • @Nico-jt8ll

    • @gplama

      @@Nico-jt8ll Sure, but that's a workaround for what should work as purchased. It'll also screw with using an AppleTV as you'll then have to use a bridge of some sort to get all the required devices/sensors working with that. (Power, Cadence, Control, HR).

    Perfect timing! I’ve been increasingly drawn towards the H2 trainer over the Wahoo units due to the number of reported issues (despite being a Wahoo fan boy). With the H3 being released I’m hoping for an even larger discount on the H2 come Black Friday :). Would you say this is a minimal up upgrade as per H1 to H2 and now H3? Also the H2 you called not 2018 standards in terms of noise yet only a 5db discrepancy to the reported figures of the H3. Was the noise really that much different?

I haven't compared data like Shane has, but just comparing Garmin V3 (one side) on 520 Vs zwift from H3. Is there a way to up the H3 power artificially, reduce weight so w/k is more accurate? Or just use V3 as power meter on zwift?

  • @TheyForcedMyHandLE
    @TheyForcedMyHandLE Před 4 lety

    Guess we're going to need to calculate and enter our drivetrain losses throughout the shift range if we want the trainer power numbers to better match crank power meters. Do trainers already estimate this?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 4 lety

      They typically don’t... they don’t now what gear you’re in and the chain angle. The ultimate solution is to use an on-bike power meter - closer to the power source and away from the complexities/heat/noise of the trainer.

  • @samski1990

    What’s your take on the sound comparison between the H3 and the 2018 Kickr? DC Rainmaker says the H3 is not on the same level as the Kickr or even the Kickr Core. Do you agree? Or are they both so quiet that any comparison pointless? (I’m largely concerned with avoiding floor vibration and keeping my downstairs neighbor happy!)

    • @gplama

  • @rjsanner1
    @rjsanner1 Před 4 lety

    Could the wattage robbery be due to the location of where it is measured? I am thinking the drive train would steal a few watts as it transfers your power to the H3. Not sure if anyone has looked at wattage lost due to different chains or even if that would make a difference.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 4 lety

      Doesn't seem to be a problem for it in ERG steady-state. I've never seen any more than a few watts even when cross chaining. It could be related to the way the H3 measures power vs other meters. Variances in cadence during the pedal stroke (much like oval rings) could be influencing the readings under this specific scenario. It's a rabbit hole I'll need more sensors and tests to confirm. At the end of the day I'm not doing anything special or different to a standard user - so there should be clarification around accuracy/measurement if this is the case.

    - I know some people say you don't "coast inside", but many people do for many reasons (Zwift riding, recovery after sprinting, calibration, etc.).

My ride definitely "felt" different. Granted, I have been doing a lot of riding so my legs my just be shot at this point, but it "felt" I had to pedal harder to reach the same watts after that spin down. You noticed the "wattage robbery" was just on variable uphill sim. Could it be drivetrain loss? I mean your comparing pedal (before drivetrain) to unit (after drivetrain) and that lower measurement is consistent with the amount of a crosschain situation. Just an idea.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 4 lety +1

      One thing Saris do well is machinery and metal. Three different pitched axles (same as the SNAP kit) would be welcome. Not being able to use a trainer out of the box isn’t a good experience. • @AndrewVanTil
      @AndrewVanTil Před 4 lety

      @@gplama I agree that the experience should be better. A little more effort in the design phase would have gone a long way here.
      That said, of the four thru axle road bikes I have owned (three which are still around), only one (the Giant) would have been a issue. Two of the four have "aero" thru axles, the other had a DT Swiss lift-and-ratchet design which would have worked around this problem. Even there, my Giant, as I imagine your's does as well, has a bolt at the end of the thru axle which makes it possible to use the lever on the axle to turn it like a wrench. Inconvenient, sure, massive faff, maybe not so much.
      FWIW, I don't run the stock thru axle in my Giant because the design of their axle makes it so it doesn't work when fenders (aka mud guards) are mounted on the bike using its native fender mounts (cough, design fail). If Giant had fitted a more flexible thru axle (i.e. the DT Swiss kind) it would sort both this issue, and mine.
      Also worth noting that the three axles of massive length approach wouldn't have worked with one of my bikes because its has a cover over the axle on the drive side. It is possible to remove the cover, but the same bolt which holds that in place also holds the derailleur hanger, so it would be complicated to put the bike on/off the trainer.
      The variation in thru axle implementation bike-to-bike and OEM-to-OEM complicates things, which is the point I was trying to make earlier. While it sucks that it didn't work the way you expected, adding unnecessary cost which might not be required, or actually fix the problem in a suitable way probably isn't the best approach for a mass market device.

      3. full frontal is tough. :)

    Any updates on the CAD issues in Zwift ?

      I've done a few quick tests with later firmware, same issue on variable SIM gradients. I'll need to re-test again soon with the latest firmware.

    Does the H3 still have cadence and power reading issues?

      I haven't been back on the H3 for around 12 months, so I'm not sure of any updates/improvements they've made.

      Hi Shane thanks for your help. Just don’t know whether to trust the H3. I recently bought the Wahoo kickr 2020 from my local bike shop but had marks appear on the drive belt caused by a pulley wheel. Replacement started to do the same thing plus it vibrated badly in high gears. The right leg was not sitting correctly. They have suggest the H3 as a replacement!! I bought the wahoo to use the kickr climb but feel a bit disillusioned by smart trainers so back on the dumb trainer with sensors at the moment. Will probably give wahoo one more chance!! Your reviews are always great and so informative. Thanks.

    Just got the H3. Due to the stupid design on the unit, I can't attack the bike using my thru axle because the design prohibits me from spinning the lever on the axle to tighten it!
    I had to purchase a "trainer" thru axle for $108 Can! Have not use it yet but now it is snowing and I was just about to set it up. In the out of the box vid by Saris, it show the guy sort of "ratcheting" his thru axle in order to tighten it. Not sure how the hell he does that because with my Giant axles, I can just join them to tighten or loosen. No way to ratchet backhand forth to tighten. Why the hell did Saris design the H# like that?!

      Depends on your budget. It'll work fine for the beginner through to pro rider.

    Is it a bad idea to keep my bike attached to the smart trainer since I’m riding every day indoors? Should I unattach my bike every ride? Thanks 👍🏻

    Those giant thru axle has an hex key on it that you can remove the lever section so it could work but not ideal. Glad Summer is coming I think you need more of a tan ;)
