  • Thailand's most famous dessert made simple for an American or European kitchen. You can make Mango Sticky Rice easily in your own home.
Make sure you use rice labeled glutinous, sweet or mochi because sticky rice is NOT created by cooking regular rice in a different manner, sticky rice is a unique grain that includes many varieties such as red, brown and purple (among others). If you use Uncle Ben's Quick Rice or just any old regular table rice you happen to have gathering dust in your pantry you will be crestfallen at the abomination that guests will surely baulk at eating.
After rinsing and soaking the rice between one hour to overnight you will be able to test when it is ready by rolling it between your fingers and feeling a slight crumble. If you want to speed up the process you can soak the glutinous rice in hot water.
You may think the coconut milk topping should be sweet but traditionally it is actually salty, the sweetness is in the coconut milk that is soaked into the sticky rice itself and the mango, if you got a good one. The coconut flavored topping, contrary to its appearance, is slightly salty and not sweet.
