How a Random Flower Became the Bitcoin of the 1600s

- When Bitcoin came screaming back into the public consciousness in late 2017, there was a lot of talk about whether or not Bitcoin is an economic bubble. The crypto currency flew under the radar for several years and then all of a sudden it skyrocketed in market value. But what goes up must come down and nowhere was this more evident than the Tulip Mania which inflamed Europe in the 1630s.

"While the idea of tulip trading may seem absurd to us today"
No no, spending a house on a flower is actually far less absurd than spending a house on a link tied to a png
But what if it's a png of a tulip? I'm going to be so fucking rich.

I thought the same thing, but then I learned what NFT's actually are.
It's like a piece of land (NFT) that you can own, in a country (on the network). Basically, you own a piece of the crypto network. There is no other piece of land (NFT) that is like yours. But your piece of land (NFT) is only worth something, if you have a reliable country (network).
The (network) is decentralized, which means it's not ran by a country. That means that 1 government entity can NOT own it. It's ran by every one on the network. Basically, if you believe technology is going to be used a LOT in the future and you believe in freedom, then I highly suggest you look into it more instead of thinking it's just a picture.
NFT's are not like a piece of art (they can be), but they can and do have utility to them. They are called "smart contracts", eventually, instead of going to your bank (controlled by a government) to get a document or "contract" notarized, you'll create an NFT that will never change, that is stored on a secure network, that no single government owns and can tamper with, after they take over another country.
@@michaelscarlata8314 no no, i was making a joke. i know what it is on a deeper level and i strongly disagree with that take, but i have a life and don't wanna argue in yt comments, sorry

Suggestion: The Cabbage Patch Doll craze of 1984. Adults were literally trampling over young children to get their hands on those dolls during the Christmas season that year. Folks lined out overnight in front of stores that had limited supplies of the coveted doll.
I was 8 years old when that stuff was happening. I wonder what my mom went through to try and get one for me. I can’t ask her because she passed in 2006, but I do remember her saying that things were crazy!
God yes, I was one of those Adults trying to get one for our daughter. I did get one, not the one she wanted but I don't think she cared.
I googled it and regretted, it looks scary...
Which is also really sad being Xavier Roberts stole the idea and design from a little old lady who made the dolls for friends and family. She never saw a dime. Then he goes and makes millions.
@@SunnyDDs or the little old lady was happy because her dolls brought joy to many kids
Well, your Bitcoin stash will never go moldy because your basement flooded. On the other hand, you'll never lose 5 million dollars in tulip bulbs because you lost the post-it with your password on it.
Speaking from experience? I sure hope not!
In the early 2000s, during the height of the Martha Stewart madness, she loved her some hydrangeas. They seemed to feature in all her pics, they can be dried and still look pretty, come in blues, pinks, purples, etc. We had a huge plant in our backyard, so beautiful. We came back from a short trip and SOMEONE had come into our BACK yard and clipped EVERY SINGLE BLOOM. Who does that?!? I was so pissed. I’m still not over it.
One spring, my mom’s garden of red, yellow, and orange tulips bloomed. Amongst them was a blackish tulip. We have no idea where it came from. Thus I’ve coined the term: “Squirrel Gardening”.
I explain it for the hydrangea that’s appeared in our back yard, and the clematis in the front.
We got a.pumkin this year from the squirrels turned out to be a buttercup squash. Very delicious seeds. Very meaty. I love squirrels and their antics even if they eat all my sunflowers 🤣
" Squirrel gardening" LOL I've never heard the term before, but I love it, and will use it from now on
You may be interested in Dumas novel 'The black tulip'. A work of part history and fiction. People have been trying to breed black tulips for centuries. The closest we've got is called, Queen of the night (although it still isn't totally black - more of a really deep purple).
Perhaps yours was truly black? If so, Dumas called it "The eighth wonder of the world!
If you get any more, let me know! We could get very rich lol!
While my wife and I were dating in high school we were at this church lock in. I said, “Can’t wait till we get outta here and I can plant one on ya” she said, “What kinda flower”
No hesitation I say, “Tulips”
The prices of the tulips/bulbs may have been outrageous, but they sure do make things pretty!

I was just saying to a friend the other day that NFTs are basically the new Beanie Babies.
Yeah digital art NFTs are stupid.
At least Beanie Babies still have the appeal of being children’s toys that they can played with. A NFT is basically just buying a receipt and you’re trying to find someone dumber then you to buy it off for a higher price.

if the tulip value was highly influenced by rare non-hereditary patterns and trading was done via bulbs, how did they estimate the value of a bulb claimed to turn into a candy cane flower? were there unique signs of what the end product would look like? and if no one would want to plant it because it would begin the end of the their investment, would the bulbs just eventually die or do bulbs last a really long time if not abused? it seems like an unwary buyer might easily buy some plain tulip bulb and never know they were tricked, which would be great for the scammer. scary activity...but then the power of missing out on the big thing and seeing people make real money around you..it must have been hard to resist too :-(

The bulbs were planted every year. And the mania only lasted like 1 or 2 years.
Holland, MI USA has a beautiful Tulip Festival every early May. Every time I see it I wonder how much those flowers would be worth at the height of the craze and how much folks from that time would freak if they saw the acres of flowers🙂
Interesting history indeed and in answer to your final question, I'd take the "diseased tulips" over Bitcoin. Mostly because at least the tulips are a real thing that only has value when it's planted in fertile soil. A Bitcoin is a series of ones and zeroes on a server somewhere.

Thanks. I always enjoy your videos. Bubbles are always crazy in retrospect. And we had two massive ones recently (tech bubble that popped in 2000 and housing bubble that popped in 2007/8). There always are bubbles somewhere, but I don't think we'll see something like 2000 and 2008 again soon. Although with low interest rates bonds could be a bubble bigger than 2000.
You must be kidding yourself if you don't think we're headed in the same direction as we did in 2008. The next market correction might be much worst as now we also have inflation to deal with.

Makes me remember Pokémon cards in the late 90s and early 2000s. My parents spent soo much money on packs when I was a kid.
I will remember the day I found a holographic charizard and it made me famous in my school for a time. Everyone was talking about how much money they were worth...
I have my whole collection, including the charizard to this day. The total value? Zero.
Zero? There has to be some Pokemon collector who can value it.
>Zero value
I have no idea why you'd say this, frankly. If the cards are still in anything resembling decent condition SOMEONE can and will buy them.

8:58 I heard that the tulip market collapsed because a tulip merchant with dependent daughters passed away. When executing his will, his collection of tulip bulbs was put onto the market, suddenly flooding it. All at once, supply was greater than demand and prices began to plummet downwards. Naturally, other tulip merchants became alarmed and tried to sell their own tulip bulbs, making the price go even lower. It's a very interesting slice of history to look into, unfortunately it doesn't appear that we've actually learned any lessons from it.
