  • Hello everyone and welcome back as always!
    This movie was just amazing and I put a lot of love into editing this again :D
    I can only use 10 minutes of copyright content... it's illegal to use more and I could risk having a strike or getting sued. If you like to see our FULL Reactions to this, you can find it in our link below if you scroll down :)
    Thank you to all of you who have been so supportive about our Dad... he had a stroke last Saturday, was in the ICU for a few days and was able to come home earlier this week. We're so thankful he's doing ok and has a long road of recovery ahead of him. We all are taking shifts being his aid after work to help him regain control of his motor functions. We are working together and staying strong as a family unit :) Point is, I love editing and will continue to make videos in my spare time of course... but some may be delayed to help my Dad recover.
    We reacted to this video last Friday and this was going to be a week early surprise for everyone last weekend, so this video took place before Dad's stroke... so did Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (which will be up within the next couple days as well). We haven't made videos since Dad's stroke, but hope to sometime this week.
    Thanks again everyone! xoxo

    I’m a huge Star Wars fan, but I think the LOTR trilogy as a whole is the greatest movie ever made by far.

      I’ve started to agree with that notion too, even as a person who came of age when the original films were in theaters and meant the world to me. I think it’s because the material is much more dense in terms of time spent with the characters, whereas Star Wars is essentially a very simple story painted in broad strokes.
      But a big - yet very specific - reason for me is the conclusion of both trilogies. People complain about ROTK’s multiple endings but I think they are all very needed to show how everyone’s stories wrap up. It really puts the period at the end of the sentence. ROTJ (not the Special Edition version) however, just abruptly ends at the campfire party in Endor. Death Star blows up and the movie is over 3 minutes later with everyone smiling and dancing at a party. It’d be like if ROTK ended with everyone laughing while Frodo lays in bed.
      If the SW films were 3+ hours each and had the benefit of modern effects, perhaps we might have seem a truly epic ending. But then again, that’s not the type of films Lucasfilm set out to make. But still, I felt even then like ROTJ ended on a very small note. If a Sequel trilogy was planned to start soon after, then it’d be a perfect ending to set things up for the prologue of Episode VII.
      In any event, both trilogies are what I would give the high praise of “achievements in filmmaking”.

      I think if Star Wars had only ever existed as the original trilogy, an easier argument could be made that it's the greatest. (Although obviously, that's still a matter of personal opinion.)
      But starting with the prequels, the brand of Star Wars has expanded so much beyond the original trilogy. And regardless of whether the new material has been weak or strong, the overall effect has diluted our memories of those first movies. It's hard to remember now just what a compact, evocative storytelling feat that original trilogy was. With that in mind, I can fully understand how LOTR feels like the stronger of the trilogies.
      On the other hand, I heard that Amazon is considering making a LOTR-based TV series. If that comes to pass, I wonder if we'll get a similar fatigue regarding Middle Earth as we have regarding Star Wars.

      WastedPo Well said, Prequels despite their flaws are also masterpieces in their own way, and the hate is completely unjustified. Sequels on the other hand...makes me angry and sad to see what is happening to Star Wars.

      SenorPredo - Minecraft Coasters really. Granted in the first book they essentially fuck everything up. But they begin their redemptions starting with the Ents. Because they convince Tree Beard to pass by Isenguard they cause the most gentle of giants to enter the war against mordor and help completely take Isenguard and Saurumon out. With pippins help he lights the beacons of Gondor ensuring Rohan would come to aid, he also notified Gandalf that Denethor was losing his shit making Gandalf take over as the leader of Gondors army until Aragorn got their. Plus he helps preserve the line of the stewards of Gondor. Merry become a soldier for Rohan and helps to conceal the identity of Eowyn as she travels with the rohirim to aid Gondor. Also he stabs the witch king Nazgul in the back wounding him and distracting him enough for Eowyn to deal the final blow to the Witch King causing the most dangerous threat at Gondor to be taken care of, and this also causes the other Nazgul to retreat from the battle having lost their leader.
      Lord of the rings is grand fantasy yes. But it also shows how the most insignificant of people can find their courage and essentially change the outcome of the world if they put their mind and will to it.

    One of my favorite things about LOTR is how throughout their journey Frodo only has his willpower and in the end even that isn't enough. So one of the smallest and weakest of creatures is literally facing something he can't fight against. Sauron's power is just too great for anyone that has ever lived, yet against all odds they pull it off.

    Frodo Gandalf and the Elves went to Valinor. It is essentially a place where elves came from and is yes essentially paradise, a trip that is essentially similar to dying since you do not come back from it and live forever in it. So that's where they are going. As the elves pointed out, they left because the powers of the rings was dissolved, magic became stale in the world and the time of men was coming to a start. All rest was fading and they were going back on the place of their divinity. Frodo decided to leave with them because his quest was ended and his wounds both literally and figuratively never healed. He decided his time has ended in the world of middle earth and was ready to move on.

    The Eagles are messengers and an extension of Manwë, who is the head of the Valar (like arch-angels) and lord of the skies. After the 1st and 2nd age, they have pulled back on being too involved in the affairs of men (and the Elves that remained in middle Earth). They did come to the aid of Gandalf though, because Gandalf is actually one of the most powerful and wise Ainur (angel) from the order of Manwë...
    Anyway, you should really read The Silmarillion, because there's so much lore all the way from the creation of the world up until the events of LotR. It's an amazing piece of work (or art if you like) that explains so much.
    Anyway, I love your reaction videos!

      Just gonna add this cause there always seems to be one person who asks why they don't just use the eagles to fly to mordor. One of the characters in the novels basically asks Gandalf why they don't do this and he tells them that the eagles all have a fierce pride and the Ring would corrupt them because of it.

    • @peterp2153
      @peterp2153 Před 6 lety +2

      Obviously you can’t have the Eagles carry the ring for external storytelling purposes, just as the bad guy always makes the mistake of leaving the hero alive in the first act of a spy film. There just wouldn’t be a film then.
      That said, I like that the Eagles only show up at the end because it shows that all the intelligent creatures of Middle Earth need to take a stand, just like the Ents did in The Two Towers (even if they did it more for vengeance than anything else; however, it’s positioned earlier in the film by Merry that just standing by is not good enough because they’re “part of this world”). Also, it’s kind of necessary since we do see an Eagle early on in the 1st film and then never again, so it’s good to see their arc conclude. Even if it isn’t as important as seeing what happened to say, Saruman. But it’s still nice to tie off that loose end.

    Not only is Return of the King the greatest movie of all time, but the trilogy as a whole is the greatest trilogy of all time. The only nitpick I have with it now is that some of the special effects doesn't hold up as well, but we are talking about 5% of the effects. 95% of the effects are flawless. There is no wrong answer to which is your favorite Lord of the Rings movie, they are equally extraordinary. This trilogy will never be topped. It could take decades before we see another movie trilogy that matches this.

    • @Walamonga1313
      @Walamonga1313 Před 5 lety +12

      Yeah, they're not flawless (examples being some effects and having the double's faces for the hobbits and Gimli not swapped for the actor's in some scenes) but all in all they're the biggest achievement in cinema history. I doubt any movie, or hell even a trilogy, could ever match up to LOTR.

    • @Waterbug1591
      @Waterbug1591 Před 5 lety

      CGI and VFX help achieve the impossible and bring fantasy to life but aren't the underpinning factor that make great films. Star Wars OT was a great trilogy, the effects don't hold up well either for today's standards. Films today with effects and technology for today are not going to hold up well either in the future. It should only be judged for its time, a spectacle driven by that certain era. A horse wagon was pretty amazing in the 1800s and now we have trucks.

    For me I really enjoyed the storyline of Aragorn in the books and the movies because he is a character of honour and loyalty and at the end when he says, "You bow to no-one" I was almost bawling at the amount of love that he has built up for the Hobbits. I know we will never get a continuation, but from the ending alone it is clear that Aragorn will continue to be the brave, honourable and loyal man he is but as a king.

    About the Eagles:
    Tolkien never fully explained why the Eagles did not help the whole time. He just described them as a powerful weapon which he did not want to use too often in his books. But geeks found interesting facts in the story and formed plausible theories.
    First of all the Great Eagles are not Gandalfs pets which he can call as he wishes. They were sent to Middle Earth by the leader of the Valar to watch over the Noldor (an ancient Elven Clan) and to keep an eye on the first Dark Lord Morgoth. So they were messengers and spies of a powerful being from a distant land. Even though ages passed by they remained in Middle Earth. Gandalf was a little lower in the ranks and could only ask them for help. But the Eagles decided if they wanted to act or not.
    They are also still vulnerable to arrows and steel which is why they rarely helped in battles. They also did not carry the ring to Mordor because the enemy had many spies. Only the smallest and sneakiest people could try to bring the ring to Mordor without being noticed and hunted down.

    Your reactions are awesome! I remember seeing these movies in the theaters when they came out in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and being mesmerized. The extended editions really add so much more to them so I'm glad you opted to that route. It's interesting to learn what happened to the Fellowship after the war as well, though I could understand how they could not fit all that in--Legolas eventually taking a ship to the Undying Lands and Gimli being the first dwarf to go with him, Pippin naming his children after Faramir, both Merry and Pippin being granted graves of honor by the king...oh, and Sam being able to the Undying Lands to join Frodo. Such a great story! I hope you will watch the Hobbit trilogy as well after this; it has its flaws but it's still a really great story and the actors in it are phenomenal. I'd recommend if only for their great performances!As for the Eagles...well, that's something fans will be arguing about forever. My understanding of it is this: the Eagles are a separate race, originally conceived by Tolkien to be bird shaped Maiar, which is the same race as Gandalf, Saruman, the Balrogs, etc but he ended up changing this, making them taught by the Valar and held in high esteem but not of Maiar level in the theological hierarchy. Their sight could not pierce the dark pits of Mordor, which is why they only seem to come in and really lend aid after Sauron is fallen. I don't claim to be an expert on it by any means though.

  • @SomethingLegit1
    @SomethingLegit1 Před 5 lety +4

    I'll venture and add this beauty:
    “And far away, as Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own, even in Sammath Naur the very heart of his realm, the Power in Barad-dûr was shaken, and the Tower trembled from its foundations to its proud and bitter crown. The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which his doom now hung.
    From all his policies and webs of fear and treachery, from all his stratagems and wars his mind shook free; and throughout his realm a tremor ran, his slaves quailed, and his armies halted, and his captains suddenly steerless, bereft of will, wavered and despaired. For they were forgotten. The whole mind and purpose of the Power that wielded them was now bent with overwhelming force upon the Mountain. At his summons, wheeling with a rending cry, in a last desperate race there flew, faster than the winds, the Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths, and with a storm of wings they hurtled southwards to Mount Doom.”

    Ride of the Rohirrim: "For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."
    The movie did pretty well with it, but in this passage, Tolkien's prose rings like silver and steel.

    15:36 the reason why the eagles don't help the fellowship from the start is because the whole mission is supposed to be stealth mission. Gandalf, Frodo and Bilbo left to Valinor, the undying lands where the Valar (gods) and the Maiar (angels) live. The land is only open to the Elves to come and live if they choose - not any of the other races.
    A special invitation was extended to Frodo and Bilbo for their contributions in destroying the One Ring.
    Gandalf is able to return to Valinor since he is actually a Maiar from there.
    * a note on Gandalf vs the Balrog in Moria: Gandalf was able to hold his own against the balrog because they were both Maiar level beings.

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer Před 5 lety +1

      Your anologies are a little off. The Valar are the angels and the Maiar are more like spirits. There is only one god in Tolkien's world: Illuvatar, the allfather. The angels in his world are called Ainur. They helped Illuvatar create the Universe and took on physical form in which they were called Valar. So basically Tolkien merges different concepts of deities so that in the end both the idea of a pantheon of multiple gods and a single god can coexist in his world. Because both are true.

    I don't think there will ever be a better film trilogy than LOTR, the casting was absolutely perfect, makeup and costume design is stunning, sets/locations used were just breathtaking, Howard Shore's musical score is absolute sheer joy, so many recognisable pieces of music, and the attention to detail is second to none, right down to the portraits in Bag End, the intricacies of the ancient languages that give it a real sense of history, and the ornate little details in all of the outfits worn by the various species. And I love how the three films were all filmed over two years in NZ, no breaks in between just constant filming of all three at once to really make sure there's a real sense of continuity. That for me is one of the reason why this trilogy stands out so much, all three films feel like they're one continuous storyline, rather than three separate instalments of the same franchise like Star Wars, Back to the Future or Scream.

    They went to Aman, the place where the elves were originally were created. It's sort of like the Christian concept of the Garden of Eden. When Gandalf died (physically) in the first movie he returned there in his true maiar form (equivalent of an angel). His true form is of a ethereal light being far more powerful than the human wizard form they take while on middle earth. The Valar (arch-angels) then knew of Sarumon's treachery and took his power and gave it to Gandalf then returned him physically. There is a singular God named Uru who created the Valar and Maiar (collectively called Ainur). So a good wizard is effectively immortal. Gandalf became the White and Saruman become the Grey (or something less than that I think). Sauron is like a fallen angel called a (i.e. Lucifer).
    Something else of note. Sauron was the minion of Melkor a Valar who went rogue, like Lucifer. Like lucifer he was also the greatest of the Ainur and rebelled out of pride. There was this big war and Melkor was eventually defeated. Sauron, a maiar greater than Gandalf, but not quite at Valar levels, survived and would later became a problem and that's why the wizards were on middle earth. To help men and elves against him. Anyway, the men who helped the Valar during the Great War were gifted with longer life, greater wisdom and enhanced physical attributes. An island was created for them called Numenor. Aragorn is a descendant of those men. That's why he looks so young for a 87 year old. He'll live for hundreds of years. I think anywhere from 250-300.
