Such good movies. After reading the books decades ago I thought no one could capture the Trilogy. Peter Jackson did, even with all the adaptations and corruptions the movie world requires. Some book purists still rebel, but I loved all three movies.

The LOTR movies are my favorite movies of all time. I am a huge fantasy fan and they are just so good. But right behind them for me is the Hobbit movies. I still do not understand why people don't like them. Of course they have a different feel to them, but they are just so pure fantasy I still love them. And they have some truly awesome fantasy battles in it. It also has the best dragon put on screen.

I read the books after I saw the first movie. Love what Peter Jackson did with the movies. You can only fit so much material in a movie format. I hated the Hobbit movies though. They took them too far and changed a lot of the source material from a book that was a quarter the size of the fellowship of the ring. The Hobbit movies were just a cash grab by the studio I think sadly. Should have done the Silmarillion instead in my opinion.

You know it’s a good movie when it makes you see Boromir as an evil character try to take the ring, then scenes later you view him as a hero going out in an honorable blaze of glory. Such an amazing character and movie!

@@christofferjenzen78 The scene makes him seem evil. And indeed he, too, has evil in him - as does Aragorn, Galadriel etc.. Even Gandalf is not absolutely safe of evil - He can't take the ring for himself for a long time.
Tolkien had the Christian worldview, that we all have evil, and thus can be tempted. Only with the help of the Creator, God - called Ery Ilúvatar here - we can win the evil. Also the evil within ourselves. And that's our most important challenge.
That's why many of the great, powerful figures on the good side are tested by the ring. And they don't want to take it, they know it would win them over eventually. Galadriel tells this most clearly. Even Gandalf don't want to touch it by his bare hand. In Bilbo's and Frodo's house he waits for a Hobbit to pick it from the ashes. And he is actually an angel, Wizard in his Middle Earth form.
So here we see the the power of the Hobbits, their purity. They are hard to be lured to the dark side. It's shown subtly by the testings of the obviously powerful figures. That power of the Hobbits is different than people normally think what power is. It's the power of innocence, of purity. Th evil can't grasp it. Grasp in both main meanings of the word. This is true in Bible also Gospel of John, Chapter 1.
Gollum is the only Hobbit taken to the evil side, and even he can resist Sauron (but not evil) - he's just gone selfish. He has lived for years, but still doesn't serve Sauron. Remains untrustful of the lot, the Ring Lord and his minions. He sees their evil too clearly, so he can't be lured to that - only to a withdrawn, selfish creature. Can't be lured to great evil things. And so the Ring wants to get rid of him.

@@timomastosalo Jesus christ,dude....hope that wasnt blasphemous concidering the biblical references. Well, first we have to acknowledge the difference between Tolkien and Jacksons vision, especially regarding Boromir. In the book he is hard to not respect and even harder to like.
His battle with Mordor has made him weary and cynical, thoroughly explained in the book, sadly in the movie,he basically gets one of dialog to make the viewer feel his plight,Beans acting and not the script still sells it. In the book, meeting Frodo in the woods is a calculated decision and he turns into a monstrous psychopath who thinks less of Gondors safety and More of the power and control the ring can bring him....here he wants to get away from his addiction to the ring and gathers wood(Elijahs Wood?),he is in the forest before Frodo and improvises his failed manipulation because movie Boromir is desperate, cant see the big picture and fears for his people. So there is an unfortunate storytelling paradox here.
The scene as a whole doesnt make him seem evil, although trying to take the ring is profoundly immoral but he is overrun with emotion and acts on impulse,in the book it feels very malicious, here almost pathetic. However, when he slips and falls two feet (Awesome remedy for temporary psychosis btw),he immediately repents and is filled with such shame he would be completely useless to the fellowship had he lived.
Jackson should have included his monologue about battling an army of orchs with only a few men to make this betrayal resonate more. Yes,one by one the ring will destroy them all does help to make Boromir come off as less corrupted, like you said, even Gandalf struggled since the ring sniffs out your fears and desires like a God damn truffle pig. Gotta say, genius of Jackson and necessary to turn a peripheral character in the book into one of the four major characters. And Tolkiens handling of his demise is regrettable in most ways. Here, Boromir actually saves Merry and pippin from getting chopped in half which in the end helps turn the tide of war.
Boromirs idiotic arrogance comes from desperation here (Yes,of course YOU can control the ring without being corrupted, youre that one single person in history who ever could do that!) Compared to a mix of patriotism and hunger for power in the book. So when analyzing,we must seperate the two and not get them mixed up....or something to that effect.

      @timomastosalo Před 5 lety +1

@@christofferjenzen78 You understand blasphemous a bit wrong - it's not directed to me. When directed towards God, it's harmful to the blasphemer. It's a bit like someone trying to outsmart time, going to sea bottom to take the last stand against sea currents or beat the sun in martial arts. You get the picture :)
I wasn't concentrating on Boromir in my comment. I agree he's more like pitiful than sinister in this film lapse. Just I didn't go in details what kind of evil rose from him, in the film and/or the book. Didn't stop to reflect too long that particular character in neither version.
It's so long I read the book, I don't remember Boromir very well from there. Just that he was tempted to take the ring. I don't remember how noble he fought in the book, but I think he fought the Orcs for awhile, so doing yet something good for the ring bearers. Or is even that wrong?
But, whether book or film, it shows theres's evil in him. Just I especially went on to the other characters to show, I don't think Boromir is an exception in this - more like the norm case. And that even characters we consider 'good' in the story, are shown to have fears, anger, selfishness - so Tolkien is showing that none are pure.
He did make Gandalf to resurrect - he is the closest character Tolkien dared to make to resemble Jesus. The whole world(s) he sets his story, stories into, is a way to remind the reader, this is still someone's fantasy. Though in certain way he saw his story as telling the history of England.
But having written a fairy tale anyway, he had liberty with the characters to have some qualities of God, Jesus - but not being completely like him, them.

Gandalf and the Balrog are both Maiar, which are basically angels of the Valar, which are basically Gods. The ‘wizards’ are the Maiar that are sent down to middle earth by the Valar to protect the people and maintain peace, but their power is limited and they can only use it when absolutely necessary. Balrog’s are Maiar that have been corrupted by Morgoth (a Valar who was the last dark lord, and master of Sauron), and thus are basically demons. So essentially Gandalf and the Balrog are the same species, it’s just that one has remained pure and is supported by the Valar, whilst the other has been corrupted to darkness. That’s why I loved that fight, because it’s basically two angels fighting, one supported by evil, the other supported by the Gods.

But she actualy never seen the whole of the 3d movie only bits and pieces of it when she was doing something in the kitchen :) And she never seen more than half of the first part of Hobbit trilogy. I think that the new trilogy bored her :) so when comes to the new trilogy she liked only to return to the scenes in Rivendell. We wound up watching that and ROTK in one shot. She had a little trouble keeping all the names straight (mostly the human characters) but really really enjoyed the films. And believe me, this stuff is not her type of thing. We watched the theatrical cuts which I haven’t seen in years. I wa surprised how swiftly they moved, particularly the build up to the Minas Tirith battle - though late at night with a first time viewer it was probably better watching the “short” versions. She really dug Sam the most and kept asking when Aragorn would finally show up with the Army of the Dead to save the day, so it was fun when that finally happened.

Not true - no credible sources have confirmed that it was "accidental" or "improvised," while multiple have confirmed that it was intentional. The actual story seems to be that they did multiple takes, almost all of which involved the actor throwing the dagger at the tree behind where Viggo would be standing, while Viggo himself stood a ways away. After a few takes, Viggo felt comfortable with the accuracy of Lurtz' actor's throws, so he stood "in the line of fire" trusting that he wouldn't be in danger if he was hit, and managed to parry the dagger on the first take, which was the one used in the movie.
It's a cool story either way.

Just because something hasn't been confirmed or denied doesn't make it less true. One thing to note about cinema is that plenty of improvised and off-the-script scenes came to be after 1 take and the directors liked them so much that either he kept the original take or kept the concept and decided to re-shoot the scene. They'll still be improvised concepts and off-the-script, in all technicality.

Lady Galadriel was in middle earth since before the first age, and when she says that she will perish and remain Galadriel she means that she is allowed back in valinor with the rest of the elves. She was one of the elves that doubted the valar in the first kinslaying and was not allowed back in valinor because of that. She basically passed the test to return to heaven. Correct me if I am wrong about that.

You ladies are entertaining. Just found you. I'm a Tolkien fan and I've read the entire lore, the whole 6000 years of it. You probably know this by now, but Galadriel is not a witch. It's just Gimli that refers to her as an "Elf-Witch" because during those decades, Elves and Dwarves didn't get along. Centuries ago, when Elves needed help when the first dark lord Morgoth invaded them, the Dwarves stayed in hiding. And as you have seen in The Hobbit, when Dwarves needed to defend their mountains from the dragon, Elves decided to walk away. That's why Gimli says, "I would die before I see the ring in the hands of an Elf. Never trust an Elf". He called Galadriel an Elf-Witch and drew a bad image in your minds even before you met her.

One interesting thing about Lord of the Rings - when Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings, it was during a period in Britain when the industrial revolution was really having a strong effect on the English countryside. Many scholars postulate that industrialization's ravaging of the English countryside was one of the underlying themes of Lord of the Rings.

Operative 21 not wholly related but there’s a Russian “parody” of the books which takes on the view that history is only written by the victors where Mordor were actually a technologically advanced nation which was on the cusp of industrial revolution and the elves and wizards manipulated men into going against Mordor in order to stop them from becoming too powerful. It’s a really interesting concept, I believe it’s called “The last ringbearer”

You're not wrong about Galadriel and testing herself to the temptation of the ring when Frodo offers it to her freely. After she calms down and, in doing so, rejects the ring, not reaching out for it, she says that she has passed the test, and that she is ready to leave to the Grey Havens with the other elves since she was able to resist. She knows the burden that Frodo has to carry too, and that he has to carry it pretty much alone. It's heavy, but it's the choice he has to make.

Personally I think Galadriel was truly tempted, it was not just her testing herself, it was fate, the world, whatever you want to call it, testing her.
I think a part of her was laid bare in that moment, to us but also to herself, she saw what she could be, would be, and then, reeled back from it, not falling for temptation.

Did you know that Lawrence Makoare, the actor for Lurtz, accidentally threw Aragorn’s Elven dagger at him instead of missing him due to vision impairment and the Uruk make-up. Viggo Mortensen was able to deflect it. Makoare’s impaired vision also made it impossible for him to pull his punches, so both he and Mortensen threw actual punches to make the fight more realistic.
