Hey Jazza really hope you see this. A couple of tips I’ve seen that improves the quality of 3d cards is to run a black marker around the white edge of your cuts and to use those weird metal clay tools to make your pieces 3D by making them curved or folded. Like if you put the energy ball into a curved object and applied pressure it would create almost a semi spherical shape. Cheers love ya work
On the thing with the energy ball, I'd also say attempt to cut out the symbol, and have that as a separate layer... that might make it more 3d...?!?!
Even better than a black marker try a metallic silver or metallic white paint, it tends to make the edges fade into the art, or a milky semi clear with suspended holographics
Thank you for this tip!
Those are called molding tools you can get a nice set from Wal-Mart or even harbor freight.
As someone that made a bunch of 3d MTG cards, this is very interesting. I'm very jealous of your laser cut top-deck plastic and your aligning tool. Doing it by hand is much more work, hahaha
Amazing job!
I understand the appeal of these made in a quicker way, so I'll refrain from "things that require too much detail", but here are some suggestions:
1) cover the outsides so you don't see the layers. In your case, since you are using foam to bulk them (very clever, btw), I'm not sure what paint would be best. Probably something like acrylic, since it can go on thicker.
2) when you have dark images, you can run a fine-liner ink pen on the edges you just cut to paint it black. It helps with masking the cut edges and imperfections
3) As you probably won't have time to cover-paint the backgrounds, one other thing you can do is cut away "repeated" layer images. For example, in the Haunter card, his left hand in the foreground. If, in the layer below it (the one with the main body) you cut away the art of the left hand, when you place the top layer (the one with only the left hand) it will look even more 3D and it won't have the repeating misaligned art right below it. You could do something similar for the Charmander's tail and body.
Overall, this was and absolute success! Fantastic work!
I love your use of foam to bulk the cards and the fact that you protected the cards with a plastic top deck layer. I started doing it for my counters and it makes it so much easier to manipulate the cards without worry.
I've seen a fair amount of 3D-ified Magic cards, so it was super cool to see Jazza figure out his own method for creating them. I agree with your suggestions!
...And I kind of hope Jazza catches the MTG bug at some point - perhaps along with the TTT crew!
My thought: the edges could be covered with a thin plastic film or even some resin, then painted
Having made 3D card projects for years I agree with most of these. I myself and quite a few fellow artists use Gundam markers beside acrylic paint. They are wipeable for a short period but don't bleed into the cardboard.
Making your edges at least black has proven to be the best investment of time vs results improvement to our experience as it also hides cut fraying and small errors. There are more advanced ways to make projects look Way better, but they probably don't suit this 'mass production' project.
This guy has ideas , the pen on the edges is smart .
This is really amazing advice. This is why I love Jazza’s community, because it’s wholes and helpful. I really hope Jazza can see this.
I think that for the energies you could use cabochons, those glass fish-eye thingies with a flat back. It would make them look more 3d and shiny with less cutting up and layering. Also to make everything more professional you could paint the sides of the cut outs black, and maybe paint over the area where the foreground objects will be placed on the backround layers, to enhance the 3d effect. I'm looking foward to see the whole deck!!
Great ideas!
I love how MJ learned how to play into dad’s ego…
Jazza: Which ones the best?
MJ: All of them
gotta cathem all
Did… did you just call jazza “dad”?
A trick you have to know as a kid
The only thing I can think off to improve them even further is to clean up the edges. You can now rather clearly see that it's multiple layers of card/foam stuck together if you look at the side edge of the card. Somehow covering that up with tape or paint or something would go a long way to making it look even more "real" and less "cards stuck together".
The good thing about the lazercut white layers, other than adding depth, is that unlike the prototypes; there's basically no gaps. Which is a big improvement imo.
Yeah! I was first thinking about electronic tape, but some good quality tape, neatly cut with a razor would also work!
I was thinking this too. Depending on how the cards take paint there could be "bleed" into the image and getting tape the exact width without overlapping the front would be difficult. But the foam is at least easy, just paint the same color as the surroundings or black in most cases! I love the clear protector idea tho!!
I wonder if he used resin in between the layers instead of the foam pieces if that may help and add new depth. Although they would be pretty heavy after that.
@@alexz101I'm worried about the weight of that too, but on the flip side it may be easier to pull off some of the visual effects of the energy cards
I think finding a way to clean up the cut edges would really send these to the next level. Maybe by painting them either black or white, or just cutting them in a different way.
Using a black sharpie on the edges will do the trick.
Maybe black foam instead of white.
Also sanding the edges is a nice idea
Hear hear
Making a deck would be really cool, but imagine the height of the deck. Shuffling the deck would be pain 😂😂🤣
But if you wanna make a full deck you could make the new Regigigas deck from astral radiance. The deck is busted and there’s no ultra rare in the deck, so you don’t have to cut valuable cards.
I was thinking make the Regirock deck from XY ancient origins bc that deck has some cards that will look sick in 3D
I would say to not do it that way, make your own, learn 3D scan, and 3D paper effect, and use the sculpture and custom backgrounds, to make the ultimate realistic 3D card effect, without wasting money on pokemon cards.
True
Imagine having a holographic charizard 3d in ur deck, ultimate flex
Also trying not to ruin them in the process.
Maybe you could try filling the gaps with resin (possibly colored) to give the cards more strength and more depth. The resin might also be able to hide the sharp edges of every layer
That sounds like it could work but the budget might go up 😅.
I'm looking to do this only for the main squeeze of the deck 😏.
I can see where that person was going with painting some of the background.
I feel like certain cards - like charmander or the potion - would have looked a lot more 3D if I couldn't see the duplicates behind them.
Might be worth experimenting with gluing the cards to foam before cutting them. That, and thinner layering material if possible.
yeah , but that would be a lot more work , he would hfta paint every single layer to get rid of the duplicates , lol imagine spending a whole month just to play pokemon cards
@@swagatikadash2099 Yeah, that's why I was thinking to glue the cards on foam before cutting.
It wouldn't look as good as painting, but it would mask the duplicated areas
How about adding depth to the energy cards by adding a middle layer that is clear or acrylic and using that for the "glow" of the energy? Could open up the option of really blending the aura or adding sparks.
I also saw how the darker/black bit in the middle could be placed further back than the orb itself. almost like a void or something
You should paint the edges of the cardboard to match the cut out so it doesn’t look as flat
Doing this fused with the acrylic layers box trick you learned before would likely make for an amazing effect as you could also add in transparent flowing energy effects
wait this is brilliant! he can even use glitter-acrylic to simulate foil cards, or something that glows in the dark even
@@catdust or reactant tints that show different fluorescence in different UV spectrums even too if he wanted, or that change color with uv interaction/heat/direct light. Lots of options, even small leaves/petals/stuff to match a background’s style or creeping vines, or smoke clouds
@@ConnorSinclairCavin now i want to do this, anyways what's your favorite type?
i happen to like ghost types
@@catdust ghost and steel. Well technically i actually would probably say that the crystal types that were planned then ret-conned would have likely been my favorite with what little we know of them, however as it is definitely ghosts and steel. Was sad that no Rotom ever became ghost-steel, but at least we finally got Aegislash. Still waiting on basically all the best Eeveelutions tho… come on game creators, yall holdin out just because of the pure fan interaction fodder of them?
If you do want to make a full deck, you'll definitely need to make sure each card is the same thickness to make it harder to tell which card is which from the side.
You'll also need to sort out some way of hiding the edges. The wear on a card can at times be a dead giveaway.
Not to mention finding a way of shuffling it... I used to play TCGs with fully sleeved decks and even shuffling that was a bit of a nightmare.
@@jowobo89 You can always shuffle them this way: put 5 cards aß a separate pile. Then you put the next five on top always starting from the right or the left. You do this until all of the cards are distributed evenly on the piles. Lastley you put all piles into one.
@@Elehaya Pile shuffling is not sufficiently random according to the competitive rules but who cares if it's just for fun :D Just thought I'd let you know :)
This
@@Yuzuki1337 I know in Magic, there is no specific way your are required to shuffle, just as long as it is shuffled sufficiently enough that neither you nor your opponent know where the cards are, I can't speak to Pokemon though.
So pile shuffling can be deterministic, the question becomes are you actually keeping track and generally it is recommended that your have your opponent cut the deck before play thus trying to add another element of removing any sort of set up the player may have been trying to create. Trying to side shuffle these would be impossible, so likely a good messy pile might be a good method for it, I think it is called a table shuffle.....
If you decide to make a full deck of 3d cards, you should make sure that they are all the same thickness that way there is less of a chance to know what card youre going to get before you pull it.
maybe he could put tape on the edges to cover the layers or paint can be an option.
you could never make them regulation the whole reason cards work is because they all weigh the same amount with an extremely small variance for holographic ink. Even if you made them look identical in thickness the number of cards used for each 3d effect would vastly change the weight of each card, and even the amount of card preserved from each layer could contribute to the weight.
@@bradjones7491 Yes, but they aren't making them tournament legal since that's impossible. The point is that you or the opponent shouldn't be able to tell what card you're going to pull next based on the thickness. Weight doesn't matter in this case.
@@backonlazer791 I mean I was replying to the guy who was talking about how the card owner would know what cards are coming up, and you could tell if one card is significantly heavier for example.
obviously there's no way to make the tournament legal, but I don't even think you could make them standardized enough to be playable in any honest capacity.
Obviously you could still play with them just for the laughs, but not in any serious way.
Based on the thickness of just 3 cards you can immediately tell that it would be completely impossible to even play with them as to stack 60 would end up in a deck size that would be entirely impossible to even begin shuffling. Even double card thickness becomes very hard to work with.
These cards look great but that's pretty much the limit of their value. Aside from maybe using a regular deck and then replacing the cards on the field as you play them.
@@bradjones7491 While it's true there would be a weight difference, I doubt it would be possible for anyone to reliably determine the weight difference between any of the 3D cards if they were all the same thickness. A single, unaltered card weighs 1.67 - 1.76 grams, one of those stacked 3D cards probably weighs at most 10 grams. If you could, by hand, tell the difference between 8 grams (maybe the power card) and 10 grams (the least cut up 3D card perhaps) I'd be very impressed.
I'l say that the kid has got one of the coolest Dad's!❤
Go Jazza!
You're amazing
I think you only have a “normal” deck to draw from and have in your hand but once you want to play them, you switch them out for their 3D counter part
2 suggestions: 1. Darken the side edges of the card the white foam doesn’t work for me. Outside of the deck but also inside. Or buy black foam. 2. The layers further away have still the item in the front. With paint you can remove the item in front so the 3D effect will be more applicable!
Exactly ! And if removing the item perfectly takes too much time, covering it in black can look like shadows ^^
For coherence, maybe yellow would work as a better colour (as it is the border around the back and front of the card)
When Jazza realises he needs to make 2 decks of 60 cards to host a committed game ...
0:30
Imagine shuffling the deck ---
💀
@@Vanilla_The_Star_Bunny imagine you got a paper-cut from it. 5 in 1..
120 cards... there are 151 Pokemon. Coincidence? I think not!
so many things about this could be improved in obvious ways that were driving me nuts:
1. painting/sharpie-ing over the parts of the pokemon that would be visible in the background lair in black
2. coloring the edges of the pieces that have been cut black/the color of the pieces so they stand out a lot less than bright white
3. curling the edges of rounded parts slightly to lean morre into them being 3d
4. (this is the biggest one) layering parts of the pokemon on top of each other for depth. charmander's arm and haunter's back spikes/inner mouth were the biggest examples of this, butterfree i get you didn't have the materials for the wings
definitely going to look into using foam and cutting thicker plastic car holders though. those are good ideas.
🤓
The fact that your son immediately said you could battle with them and loved all of them instantly made me really happy, hnnn-
What do you mean by that?
I would recommend probably going for a starter or trail deck. Just because they usually consist of multiple copies of cards/Pokémon and you get a bunch of energy along with it. So that would be quite useful compared to buying multiple packs and getting different ratio of cards/Pokémon.

Makers Muse who concentrates on 3D models & printing would probably be interested in doing a collab around those 3D card molds. A number of people would like a template for those.

I would like to recommend making notches with magnets embedded into them on the side(Pokemon Cards) and some different colored magnetic balls. When attaching ENERGY cards, those cards typically need to stack. If you have different magnets to work in place and attach in lue of energy, even if and when you can provide you have it, it will make game play a little easier.
you might need 2 decks one to play with and then a seperate 3d model deck that you can pull out when you play a pokemon, putting an overlay to show energy and whatever else pokemon uses.
I love everything that he does but when he shows to his kids how you can “destroy” something to make it another thing even more beautiful just makes me really happy :”3
The last ones are great techicaly, but having a sides in some fitting to outline color like in Butterfree will do better for the 3D effect. Being able to see duplicates underneath destroyes the effect.
Using a curved scalpel blade would make cutting around curved edges so much easier, if anyone wants to attempt this. Straight blades are best for straight lines and sharp corners.
This is so cool! I wonder if you could take a scan of the card and then map out each of the "layers" on phototshop or something. Throw those into your laser cutter and have the LASER CUTTER do all of the cutouts for you?? SUPER crispy lines AND the only bit you have to do manually from there would be to assemble.
It would also give you a way to dynamically preview each card to make sure you get the exact affect you're wanting ahead of doing anything to the physical card. I would LOVE a part 2 of this where you did more of the tech-y integration in the process. So cool!!
I was thinking the same thing, but with a Cricut. It wouldn’t surprise me if the laser cutter would ignite the cards.
Is there anyway to utilise a Cricut machine for neater edges? Ie, scan the images in and use the machine to cut??? Maybe just for the energy and items, to speed things along. Love the cards! :)

Finally something I might be able to help with. You can gently curve and mould the card to get rid of the awkward flatness and cutting edges. You can also use silicon glue to get a beautiful transition between layers instead of the stepped look. Just the first one really elevates simple decoupage really easily. I hope this helps someone!
I know the Haunter was probably harder to do, but the effect was SO GOOD. PLEASE do a deck that lets you flex those creative muscles with the body parts spacing. Personally, I'd vote for either water, due to the variety of background effects you could beautifully 3D-ize, or bug, due to their wicked proportions.
You could paint the white edges on the inside and outside to make it match, and get rid of the Pokémon of the background card so it only looks like the foliage background, other creators actually do this.
One of the video's you watched I remember that they lined the edges with a black marker to hide the white cut lines. Is has a cleaner finish and think it worked well.

suggestion for the energy balls: since you have the glass cover you could fill the inside with something to add to the effekt. I am thinking of glitter or sth similar. Great work they really look cool!
This is about as 3D as those gimmicky 3D TVs back in the day.
If you make a full deck of these, you could use proxies for the cards to make it playable as a deck and just keep all the 3d's on the side so you can replace the proxies as you play the cards.

You can use the bigger 3d ones for when you actually play the card
should of made haunters eyes and mouth a layer down in my opinion
These cards look amazing. I really love em. I think the only thing that you could do to improve them a little bit, is if the foam you use for padding the cards out was colored the same as the cards interior, so that even when looking at an angle, it would look like a lot more cards stacked together instead of different material.

Your 3D card maker would be awesome to offer to folks! Even on your shop, if you don't want to offer the mold for free! I think that'd be really neat to use! I love how they look but I have to say, it makes me cry a little to see cards cut up like that haha... being a card collector and all. Still, really cool. It'd be awesome if Nintendo made these themselves for collector boxes too!
I'd use a 3D printer to make some aspects of the card i.e. main component to bring a real sense of 3d
As someone who's grown up with pokemon this is simply amazing to see! I love the idea of a whole deck to play with! I think one suggestion I would make is to paint the outside edges of the cards to hide the white of the spacing material. Also if you use a specific deck, you should use the Ancient Origin- Iron Tides deck! It's main pokemon is Metagross (the pokemon in my profile picture) it's a really cool, really powerful pokemon! It also happens to be my favorite pokemon 😁
The easiest way to speed up the process is to digitize the whole deck & use your laser cutter to make all the layers. Then your job is simply to assemble the cards. It shouldn't take much time after you have ever cut designed.
There should be a butter free with a holographic frame and background
I've done this with a few cards before, but I don't do the gap layers, I just place them all together. It doesn't have a lot of depth to them, but they still look really cool.
I honestly just wanna see you do Primarina, I really feel she has great potential for 3d card.

5:18 YEAAAH
A way to shuffle these is a must! Assuming they are strong enough, I'm imagining a massive Plinko style machine. 🤣😂
Good luck with that one.
Ideas to make it cheaper & sturdier:
If you use layers of foam under each image in the same shape, then you may only need to use one or two cards instead of five. This way you don't have to spend as much $$ and it gives you a wider variety to choose from.
Each foam backer would need to be the same depth as the layer of the image. So it would be: 1) Background 2) Layer of foam and image. 3) Two layers of foam and image. 4) Three layers of foam and image. Etcetera for however many layers you choose.
Alternatively, cardboard or thin wood might also work.
The full image backing should also make the cards sturdier, as would an exterior casing for each card.
Setting a layer baseline for the cards will help keep them close to the same thickness.
Using layers of resin or acrylic sheets could also be used, but this might get expensive, messy, take longer and or be harder to keep even.
Jazza's content gives me the same joy that art attack gave me 20 years ago ❤❤❤!!!!!

it would take some setting up to make it happen, but I bet you could cut the artwork super cleanly and quickly with the laser cutter if you could line them up well enough. If the card can slot perfectly into the gap in the other cardboard that would be a great way to know exactly where the card will be on the laser cutter bed!
The Haunter is awesome, I know it would be more expensive, but the Mega EX cards with the Japanese Text on them were always so cool looking when I was younger, and seeing something like a Mega Gengar EX in 3d would be amazing

G'day Jazza! If you ever want to kick up production, experiment with laser cutting THE CARDS THEMSELVES. Scan them first, then create your layers digitally. All the millimetric accuracy with greater speed. You can even use the wood frames you made to get accurate, repeatable placement! Two laser cutting tips (that you probably already know)😀: 1) Go light and fast with the laser (low power and high speed). 2) Put put the artwork (good side) facing up, as the backside of a cut tends to get hit with the blowback from the burn. Love your channel, love your editing, love your serious fun. 😝 Now, Deck Maker, I choose you!
You can bevel the cut edges to make them stand out less. Just use a hard object and a bit of pressure.

Nah, TheJWittz has actually done it too! They uploaded a tutorial and all if you want another perspective on it! And same honestly
You don't really need _5_ to make them 3d like this. If you keep the cuts clean and precise then you could pull off the full depth with just 2 or 3 cards. You can also slim the cards a bit by excluding the spacer behind the clear panel, though you can also save that to use on cards like Haunter that are supposed to almost pop out of the card.

One thing I see some people do is they slightly round the pokemon/object inwards, that way you can't see the rough cutout as much but it just gives an even more 3d effect.
Using a cutout of the protectors was such a brilliant idea

I know this is the beginning of your 3d card making journey but the potion could've been so much better for instance if you made the spray handle and the nozle and maybe even the bulge on the side of the bottle being on a whole other layer since it has a bit of depth itself . Making it like you did just makes it look Like a flat bottle just hanging out in the middle of the frame .It's a great start tho .
I really appreciate the realism he adds. Such as adding up costs. I love that he lets us know that this stuff costs money and if we want to see it we gotta help out...

This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20.
Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God.
Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

This is something I do when I make my 3d cards. But the standards here are way above anything I can do. Mini foam pads are a great help in the 3d effect. They are even smaller than the 3d pads you used. (Can I come round to play? )

Hi Jazza. I very much admire your work, art and your films. Me and my kids watch every new episode. This one inspired us to make similar cards from Lego Ninjago. My children are crazy about this. It turned out very well and I would like to thank you for the inspiration to creatively work with my children. :)
for the energy you could also try cutting out the energy symbol to give it an extra layer so you'd have the normal card the energy sphere and then the energy symbol
I liked the last 3 cards the most since of the thickness (without having air in between), you can securley play with them. Plus, the final touch of adding glass or plastic protection, genius!
These are amazing, I would love to see more of them, (also the Haunter was my favorite.)
MJ has gotten so big, I can't even 😭I still remember when he was two or three and you made him give you a drawing prompt because he kept you up at night lmao. Very glad these have been officially approved by your in-house expert, to the point where he wants to keep them! You might not be getting them back any time soon though 😅
I have a surfing Pikachu card that I absolutely love and even keep in my wallet all the time. I might do this with some other cards to learn how to do this
Make sure to paint the edges to match the art or at least paint the edges of the inner layers black so it blends into the diorama
A suggestion for the energy cards is to, instead of keeping the black symbol on the top layer, to actually have it on a lower layer since, in the image of the dark one you used at least, it actually looks more like it's indented rather than follow the spherical curvature of the energy ball, if that makes sense :)
