What's sad is that Bee Swarm Simulator, a game with over 75k players, is SPONSORING this. At the spawn area, there's a portal you can walk through that takes you into Walmart Land. There may very well be other games doing this too, but I don't know

I used to be a game developer as a part of one of these companies that delved into the Roblox market - I can't say which, as it is a very powerful company (I'm sure you understand), but it is, indeed, incredibly soulless.
Decisions aren't made on basis of 'fun', but more so what will generate as much revenue and sales for the company as possible, and that's only after an incredible amount of layers of review, so that all individuality and life is sucked out of it. Large amounts of money are spent designing every aspect of the game - from the Roblox profile to every individual asset. We were told to gear everything towards children because the company wanted children to bug their parents about getting the products or services from the game - but you already knew that.
Instead, an angle that isn't typically covered is the developers themselves - from what I'm aware of, most of us were just kids just wanting an opportunity in the industry. Most of us have never played Roblox, and there we were, slaving away full time to bring some corporate board's idea of fun to life.
That doesn't even cover all the heat we got from higherups due to internal miscommunications and mismanagement, or the extremely short deadlines we were given to get the job done - I'm not sure how you can expect someone to work overtime constantly, and then chew them out for not having a good work-life balance. Or the various slideshows we had to make, just so we could present our game ideas, character models, environment designs, and writing to people who probably wouldn't care to see it until a week later. Or when we'd be greenlit, and then a concept would be cancelled entirely, or we were told to start over.
At the end of the day, barely anyone really plays our game anyway as far as I know, so it's simultaneously really sad that all that effort and pain is wasted - and hilarious that we were (presumably) paid for it all.

@@Yakiisuna Yes - we had an independent agency that we hired to integrate all of the corporate ideas into Roblox as functioning items. Coming up with fun ideas was easy - the final result was, of course, trimmed down. Both pertaining to how imaginative the ideas were, and the actual planned function of the items in game.
As a car enthusiast, seeing Hyundai on Roblox absolutely terrified AND STILL DOES terrify me :(

I remembered in the early 2010s, when I thought Roblox at first glanced looked like a Lego game that you can make your own games with. Roblox used to be called the game that was “powering imagination” not “powering capitalism”. That is very sad and very dystopian.

I remember when all the games were user made and the free games out weighed the one you had to pay robux to get into. I also remember there being an exchange system so you can exchange the free currency for the paid currency so you didn't need a parent's credit card to have nice things
I played Roblox over a decade ago, back when you’d get TIX (what you’re referring to) every time someone visited your server(s).
The platform is nigh unrecognizable from a dozen years ago, to say the least.

I felt a sudden surge of sadness when you mentioned Poptropica. Ten years ago, that game was my childhood. But then I logged in recently, and it's a stripped down, advert-ridden mess, monetised to hell and back. There are things my character got for free back then that are behind paywalls now. It's so sad to see.
You missed the Build-a-Bear one. It's one of the most boring tycoons ever and they purposefully make you walk to a machine far outside of your store to collect your money then monetize auto-collect and faster walking speeds.
I know, this has been something that the community has been sighing about for years now. What makes me even more salty is that non corporate events like RB battles are thrown under the bus.
The only reason these games are good is because I can get free items like the V-pose that allows me to glitch past walls.

Haven't seen anybody else mention this, but on a press release about Walmart land they legit called their target demographic "young shoppers". You cannot make this shit up. They are barely trying to cover themselves.
...I mean, they're awful people, I knew that, but there's something about them coming out and saying it with their own words that hits differently. Wasn't there this one toy brand that was literally just play consumerism for kids? Shopkins I think? Idk, it's been six years.

the whole daily quests, daily login reward system, levels, ranks, and in-game purchases are all common roblox game things

The one online game I can think of that I grew up in the early 2000's is Disney's ToonTown, before Minecraft and Roblox. It seems that everything on the internet started to degrade after the early-mid 2010's

a little while ago all of the popular and actually decent Ben 10 games on Roblox were purged off the site completely in favor of Cartoon Network's own official (and crappy) Ben 10 Roblox game. Just another example of corporate games ruining roblox
Corporate games also have been paying Roblox Model makers to make avatar items and put them for free on their games so more people join them. There is a roblox game called Free items game that is full of them. it's becoming a big trend for many companies to appeal to kids.
I mean, at least they removed the 30 second non-skippable sponsored ads before joining any game. But those usually came with free gear which was cool.
Since joining in august of 2008, this site has changed from being a creative place for everyone to share their ideas

@@plasmaoctopus1728 to be fair, roblox not having a default art style makes sense for it being a creative platform and not exactly a game by itself. Since anyone can make a roblox game, there's a lot of variety in quality, but also there are many games that have their own art style

Well I think I'm contributing very strongly to not helping these companies at all in this way because I just don't play Roblox. I literally only played it like twice last year and now it's just because an acquaintance of mine was streaming some fun custom-made Roblox games and I decided to join in and play as well. 2 times of playing the game for like 15 minutes each or so. One of them was some kind of Mario Kart thing that was custom made by some random person, and the other one was I think of first-person shooter of some kind
I completely missed roblox in my life, but sadly I see a lot of kindergarten age kids playing it. See you're smart so you can make good decisions, but the little kids who can't even read, yeah, they're hooked already, and they're at the mercy of what the super poor walmart daddy who always needs more money decides to force upon them. Some older kids might just stop playing these cause they're garbage, but little kids, they don't know lol, they'll play the crappiest game just cause they can jump around in it.
This is unrelated but… I went to go buy some Cheerios and on the back of the Cheerios there was an advertisement for ADOPT ME.

Fruit Loops World, is actually a graphically beautiful game, if you turn the graphics up. But there is basically nothing to do in the game. The obbies are beautifully designed, but not thought out properly in terms of playability. The main flaw is the whole game is centered around one thing, obbies.

They're really, REALLY hoping you don't read between the lines in that description.
Its gotten worse recently. Roblox is planning to remove community ads on the website and instead replace them with intrusive in-game ads that are designed to make it easier for companies and cash-grab games to advertise. Im pretty sure there is ads for actual real life products in some games. And the thing is, despite them being so much more advertised and supported by roblox, they are all still really bad. You would expect improvement, but if anything they have decreased the budget

Companies don’t make online flash games like they used to. And since flash is gone this is their only avenue to advertise. I absolutely despise roblox for giving in to CEOs and corporations.

As someone who used to work at Walmart, this game is still less chaotic than the average day there.
That car was like me on an ice boat race in Minecraft, bumping side to side. One time I was racing with a guy on an SMP server and i felt like in a bumper car. Maybe that Hyundai was a bumper car? We'll probably never know.
I’m pretty sure that these games are illegal, since advertising to minors has to be painfully clear. There’s laws and statutes stemming from the ‘80s and the ambiguous nature of kids shows based on toys.
Basically, if the game has advertisements in it and there is no clear distinction between gameplay and marketing, that’s illegal. And clearly that’s a major issue here.
As someone who is older than 10 but has no clue how to code in luau, I can confirm my games are better than these, and they were made in a day.
Why, just why, does a CAR company need to advertise to an audience where the majority can't drive? Like what even is the logic from a corporate standpoint? Like parents aren't going to listen to their kids when they ask "Can we get the car from Roblox?". It's almost more stupid than scummy at that point.

If someone took my scathing sarcasm, halfway-absurdist sense of humor, and distaste for large corporations and combined it with my (Canadian) girlfriend's appearance and love of video games, you would be the result. It is genuinely uncanny to see your profile picture- that's almost exactly how I used to draw my girlfriend. Also, I love your videos. I often play them in the background while I'm drawing and I don't know if that's some kind of subconscious alteration but whatever.

I’m…..devastated (and probably in denial since I’m just now finding out about this ). I discovered Roblox when I was around third grade, with the first game I played being meep city. I played it with my cousin, and it was the best time if my life, playing with her, bonding with her…. Now I play Roblox by myself, I mainly only play bloxburg since I have the freedom to build what I want, and sometimes obbys or classic Roblox games.
I guess I should have known something was off when their game ads went from advertising the game in the classic Roblox style to anthro characters with cool music and dances/emotes.
