Excellent advice on how to add dimension and character to a flat, blah, corporate break-room style kitchen. Agree with Lou that Cari needs to create some contrast with color. Sage green lower cabinets and a warm, not a stark white on uppers (think Benjamin Moore “White Dove”) would tie in nicely with the warm wood tones as well. A warm, medium gray or black lower cabinets with gold or copper hardware would be amazing as well. Sounds terrible, but I’ve seen it done and it’s gorgeous!
Agree with Lou’s advice to add beadboard to lower peninsula. Consider using beadboard over existing backsplash as well to create a classic look.
Maybe add a colorful glass pendant light above the sink, and another pendant or group of pendants/ small chandeliers above the peninsula.
The kitchen was super dark before. It is great how white just brightens up any kitchen. I think there was a barkolounger in that house.
Shaker strips glued on over flat 80s beige and wood doors - exactly the solution I thought of for a rental I manage! I didn't get the chance to put the plan into action, I really hope this homeowner goes for it. I vote for all white Lou 👍🏻
I loved this video. I'm looking forward to your doing more like this where you take a real room in someone's house and redesign it!
Oooooo I love this idea for a series!!
A relatively easy to execute idea with a huge impact! Lou, you've done it again! Brilliant! Love the series idea too.
Hey Lou-great idea for both the kitchen and a new design series. Have you ever thought of mixing hardware (ie. knobs on the smaller doors and handles on larger doors and or drawers-in the same finish to have continuity)?
Thanks Lou I will definitely get the hardware and beadboard. I cant decide between doing all white or grey with the white on the glass cabinet. I'll have my husband pick lol
Hello. Great ideas for that kitchen. I have been basically redoing this 1920s house pretty much by myself for over 2 years now and oh boy do I ever need help ! Maybe one day if I get to a place where the finishing a room is near I could send a photo and you could help me a bit would be more than awesome. I know my tiny house is not kind of houses you work on...but help is so so needed. So I keep my fingers crossed I get there one day. You are so smart ! Thanks 👍💗
Always good advice! I agree with the hardware suggestion. Adds a really nice element.
Looks great! Also that kitchen would look cute with that single cabinet on the left of the window taken down and put up some open shelving in its place. Also the open cabinet that is housing the cookbooks you could add a piece of wood on the bottom to extend it a little (if needed) and put the microwave in there and that will clear up the counter space but if it's ever in the budget and not a structural wall tearing out that entire wall that houses the glass door cabinets and just make it a nice giant opening into what I'm guessing is the dining room, would really make the house feel more open and bright!
Great ideas!
hope cari will do this and send us the results. will be interesting to see how much advise she took. and seeing the finish.
Great ideas !! Love how a few simple things can change the entire look ! ❤️
Awesome ideas, Lou. Michigan needs you. I'm not showing mine! xoxo :-)
I love how short your intro is. Two lines is perfect!
I reckon you nailed that one.Looking forward to seeing you do more. Xx
My husband is in the process of putting up 6" floor molding and re-trimming the doors and windows in our house, but started on his study to get the lay-of-the-land. It looks AMAZING. We're painting the trim a bright white, the walls are being painted a white with slight gray undertones and painting all the interior doors to the house black with nice (not tacky) gold hardware, he's pulled up the carpeting and put down a gray-toned wood flooring, and if his room predicts the future of the house, I'm very, very happy. However, we've a problem: what to do in the study furniture-wise. The room is fairly small, 12'x16', and I cannot come up with ANYTHING. He's an engineer by trade and a hobby woodworker, so he's making much of the furniture in the room (which means it can be ultra-customized), but I cannot figure out a layout. Would you be willing to work with a situation like this? Basically an empty room? Apologies if this is tall (and strange) order!!
SmittenKitten send me pics and I’ll see what I can do!
I love this video. Hope you do many more.
Awesome ideas. Very smart.
Thx Lou 💙
Love your way of explaining things - also great idea for a video series
Love this idea! 💙
What Brand, Color and Finish of the White and Grey Paints do you recommend using on kitchen cabinets?
Nice idea. thanks for sharing 😊
Wonderful suggestions!
that was fun to watch!
Do you have a favorite gray paint? We are trying to find a good one that doesn’t read bluish or have a colored undertone.
