Find and listen to the long version, there is a poem at the end - you will like it. "Breathe deep the gathering gloom. Watch light fade from every room..." This song is part of an album-long exposition on a single day, with "Nights..." being the climactic ending.

Wikipedia-Band member Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19 while touring in Belgium and titled the song after a girlfriend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. The song itself was a tale of a yearning love from afar, which leads many aficionados to term it as a tale of unrequited love endured by Hayward. Hayward said of the song, "It was just another song I was writing and I thought it was very powerful. It was a very personal song and every note, every word in it means something to me and I found that a lot of other people have felt that very same way about it

The music is beautiful. The lyrics are gut wrenching about his broken heart. I'll walk you through the lyrics.
    "Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end" she gave him a gift of white satin sheets that were too short, the sheets didn't reach the end of the bed. Shortly after she dumped him.
    "Letters I've written
Never meaning to send" with 20 version of his letter in the trash he never mails her a letter to try and win her back, why?
    "Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before" he is just recalling how beautiful she was.
    "Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore" this is why he doesn't mail the letter he doesnt know if she really loved him.
    'Cause I love you
    Yes, I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    "Gazing at people
    Some hand in hand"
Seeing others in love just brings back the pain.
    "Just what I'm going through
They can't understand" His friends just don't understand how broken hearted he is.
    "Some try to tell me
    Thoughts they cannot defend"
Unless you have had your heart broken don't try to defend your lack of understanding.
"Just what you want to be
You will be in the end" this line is directed at her. He's saying I'm letting you go be what you want to be but above all he wants her to be happy.
    And I love you
    Yes, I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    Nights in white satin
    Never reaching the end
    Letters I've written
    Never meaning to send
    Beauty I've always missed
    With these eyes before
    Just what the truth is
    I can't say anymore
    'Cause I love you
    Yes, I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    'Cause I love you
    Yes, I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    Oh, how I love you
I cry every time I hear this song and wonder where she is and what she is doing. Because I still have a broken heart 50 years later I perfectly understand his song.

For me it is one of those songs you can write a movie script around.
    I nearly did.
I watched a singer in a local nightclub sing it to his girlfriend with all the passion.
The next year I went to the U of O in Oregon and for a class project scripted a
movie (now we call it a music video) for the whole album. It was a novel idea at
the time 1968 or 9 and impressed my professor.
I can't tell you how many times I played and replayed the old 33 record to do it.
As for what Nights in White Satin means, let your imagination go wild, the song
has all the tension of dark drama, hope, longing, and fear it won't last long enough.
The album's name adds to the mystery, "Days of Future Passed".

Like many old timers, i just don't feel that Nights in White Satin has its true and full climax until the gong is struck. This version just leaves many of us hanging. I think this was the AM radio version, most FM stations played the full length album version with beautiful poem reading and full orchestra. I think if they had tried to play the shortened version many would have gathered their pitchforks and met at the radio station

It is an album that one can listen through in its entirety and immerse yourself into an atmosphere of the musical greatness of which the Moody Blues were capable. A musical gem and an absolute classic. Britt, you reaction was lovely and were to listen to the album in its entirety would be even more intense.

I have to admit that when I first encountered this song, while in high school in the 1960s, what I thought I heard was ‘Knights in White Satin.’ ’Knights Hospitaller’ or ‘Knights Templar’ sort of matched the initial aural image, but the rest of the lyric just didn’t gel. A few years later, when I had occasion to contemplate the song again, all of the other shoes metaphorically dropped, and a better fitting story was finally attached to the hauntingly beautiful music.

💛💛💛 i smile brightly 🌞 one of my favorite favorites, when i was a kid, i thought it was about mid-evil Knights of old, but later i realized it was satin sheets for the bed, that he knew a lot of beautiful women that he shared this bed with satin sheets; but now he just wants this one girl; that he realized he knows that knows he loves, and he wants more than just nights in satin, but he doesn't know how to go about it, how to talk to her as a individual to another individual, totally a beyond awesome song, i have never had the pleasure of sleeping in satin sheets; but they do look luscious and luxurious, and my favorite color is rich burgundy wine, i think he should send the letter or just ask her to go on a date, because such beyond beautiful satin sheets would make you feel even more lonely if you are alone, 🌞 i smile brightly 💛💛💛

I was on a school trip to England when I was 17 between my junior and senior year. We were on a bus headed to Stonehenge and the city of Bath. We were in the Stonehenge parking lot. A blonde girl in a Moody Blues crop top who had been sleeping stood up and stretched bending backwards with her arms over her head. I was transfixed. My buddy pointed to the tour bus next to us filled with men in suits who had all stood up and were applauding her. No lie. Anyways, I've always loved the moody blues.

I was 14 when that was released. It is still one of my all-time favorite songs. The entire Days of Future Past album is brilliant. They were one of the first bands to add a symphonic element to their music. Another great band who did that is Procol Harum. Check out their song A Salty Dog, or Grand Hotel. Love your react videos.

Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19 in Swindon a town in the UK, and titled the song after a girlfriend who gave him a gift of satin bed sheets.
He had ended things with her and he had a new woman in his life. The song is thought to be a tale of a yearning love from afar, telling a story of unrequited love endured by Hayward, as he was caught between ecstasy and despair, ruing the end of one love affair while embarking on another.
... The concert at The Royal Albert Hall was the best performance of this song IMO. It's on CZcams. Subscribed 🙂

"Nights in White Satin” by The Moody Blues is a song about the end of one love affair and the beginning of another and is supported by various sources. Justin Hayward, who wrote the song, has spoken about its personal origins and the emotional context in which it was created. The song’s lyrics reflect a deep sense of longing and introspection. White Satin represents the emotions with changing lovers....maybe it's allegorical.

"Nights In White Satin" is their most famous song. Moody Blues are one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. Lots of great songs such as "Go Now", "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" etc. All of their music is great! Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once. Sadly Ray Thomas their flute player & singer passed away in 2018 & their drummer Graeme Edge passed away in 2021.

The Moody Blues have quite a catalog of songs to listen to. From the same era as "Nights In White Satin" comes "Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)." But I would recommend you listen to some of their other stuff to get a better idea of their range. Their very first hit featured a different lead singer, Denny Laine, who would later go on to be part of Paul McCartney's second band, Wings. Check out the Moody Blues' "Go Now." "Ride My See Saw" was another good one from their early years, as was the less remembered, "This Is My House (But Nobody Calls)." Then in the '70s, on the heels of tehir "Days of Future Passed" album which spawned "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin," they became a bit more prolific. Check out their hits, "Question," "The Story In Your Eyes," and "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock and Roll Band),." You can't go wrong listening to any of these.

This song is the last cut on the concept album Days of Future Passed which was meant to be listened to from beginning to end. Concept albums were a thing back in the day. This band and Cat Stevens are hands down my wife's favorite artists. You should really listen to the Albert Hall concert version of this song they did when they were all in their 70's! With a full orchestra and Justin Hayward could still belt that song! He had that cry in his voice that is so good! They have a deep catalogue! Tuesday Afternoon (from this album), The Question, the list is long!
My wife and I saw them in concert at Paris, Las Vegas quite a few years ago and the show was fantastic! I mentioned to her at the time as they were all getting up there in age; what if your grandfather and his world famous band played your birthday party? How cool would that be? Sadly, many of them have passed now.

I can’t tell what concert this is, but they have done many concerts with a full orchestra because the music lends itself so well to all these classic sounds. The violins and horns and especially the tympani tuned to the right note gives such an impact.

Standout voice, great song. I wonder what modern music would be like if they followed more of the Moody Blues style. Big, orchestral, but still modern. The perfect song to reach an angsty young woman. "Nights in White Satin" = "Nights in the Bedroom". Somebody needs to make a song like this for Cozy Earth sheets!

As strange as it sounds. The Moody Blues big break is when they hired to record a classical album by Deca. Instead, they used the orchestra to record the album this song was on. Only sending the orchestra parts to Decca. But when their album blew up Deca stopped being mad at then.

    Hi Britt
I have been a fan of The Moody Bules since 1970. This was about the time I started to listen to rock music I was 7 at the time. This was the first group I started following and I still follow them today. What does Nights in White Satin mean??? Well, that depends completely in the listener and the context. Taken alone many feel it represents the comfort of being in love. This is the last song on a concept album called "Days of Future Past. On the surface the album is about one day, and each song represents a time of the day. A deeper meaning that many get is that the album represents one life, and each song represents a period in a person's life from birth to death. You should listen to the whole album. Fun fact, this album was designed with an orchestra to test the first stereo system. There were two songs that made it to #1 from this album, "Nights in White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon". I think it was also the first concept album, but I could be wrong on that point. One of the best things about the Moody Blues is that all of their songs mean something different to everyone. You can lose yourself in their music and let it take to your place and its OK if it is different than someone else. On the album there is a poem about the moon, part one is at the beginning of the album and part 2 is at the end after Nights in White Satin.
