    The reason they are all eating icecream is because L has an absolute _bonkers_ sweettooth and I guess he did not want anyone feel left out. Also, I'm pretty sure the flavour is probably Matcha (Green tea) an extremely popular flavour in Japan that has a similar green to pistacios

      see, this is all very funny to me, because I always assumed that the ice cream was some sort of darker color, and the lighting was distorting what color it appeared to be. so to me, the green cast read as light off the monitor, and the actual color would be whatever it was beneath the shadowed part. so I had thought maybe chocolate or something... but matcha is probably way closer to the truth.

    About L suspicious face after the potato chip scene. It's not like he got some clue from Light but rather found the abscense of any clues worrying. According to L's deductions, Kira is as smart and ambitious as him. Obiously, such a person would not only reveal L's scheme, but also show off to L with something that proves their innocence. So, while Light indeed removed any formal suspicion, he kinda played into a profile of Kira that L developed for himself.

    • @Greywander87
      @Greywander87 Před rokem +7

      It actually makes perfect sense to do this. One way to check if something is true is to test for the opposite. If you think no one is home, then by calling out you're checking to see if someone _is_ home, and if so, then it would disprove your theory that no one was home.
      I remember seeing a video by, I think, Veritasium where he presents people with a sequence of numbers and asks them to guess other numbers that were also part of the sequence. People had a tendency to guess obvious numbers (e.g. if he had given 2, 4, 8, 16, they might guess 32, 64, 128), which confirmed in their mind that they had it figured out. But for the most part, they never checked numbers that didn't seem like they should be part of the sequence, and it turns out the sequence was something like "all the whole numbers". If they had tried even one number that was "off" from what they thought the sequence was, they would have easily discovered they were wrong. If you're given the sequence "2, 4, 8, 16," you might think, "well, 7 can't be part of that sequence," but if you get confirmation that it _is_ part of the sequence then you'll realize you'd made a fundamentally wrong assumption about the question.
      All this to say, if your theory is that no one is home, then doing things that confirm no one is home don't really give you any new information. If you instead check to see if anyone _is_ home, the first positive result proves your original theory wrong. And no, it's not like people think this all through when they do it, it's just natural instinct. When we are someplace where we expect there to be people but it seems like we're alone, our natural response is to call out, to seek the other people we are worried aren't there. Wouldn't surprise me if this was some kind of primal monkey brain thing, where being alone makes you vulnerable, but being together makes you strong, so the natural response when you think you're alone is to seek out other people.
      Anyway, thanks for listening to my TED talk.

    I _do_ actually wonder how much Chief Yagami trusts Light or even _knows_ Light. He doesn't seem to be home very often and Light seems to have been a very private person, even before the death Note.
    In my Opinion, Light is also a Psychopath. He clearly lacks empathy for other people and while he _sais_ that he is doing all of this for a better world, his actions speak differnt. He is doing this to become a God, to be revered, to make himself more then other humans.
    Now, there is a bit of a debate in the fandom if Light was always this way or if the Death Note corruptet him in some way and we never really get an answer, since we barely see a glimpse of him before he finds the Death Note.
    But assuming he was like this before (Which I believe) there is the question: Did his father notice things? As someone who has to have dealt with the odd Psychopath before, did he have his little misgivings about his son? I don't think he would voice them ever, even if he had, but you have to wonder...

      Light is more likely a sociopath as he can feel emotions like remorse, guilt and fear. The was overcome with guilt, remorse, fear and had to tell himself he was doing a good thing to keep himself from breaking down(this was shown much more in the manga). He feels love towards his family(more for his mom and dad) even though he sacrificed his father. He also is capable of compassion and empathy which is shown when his memory of the death note was gone. Psychopaths don't feel love(can substitute it with other things) or fear.

    I think the point about the TV and Ryuk wondering why Light just throws it away after one day of use and pointing out that it's quite expensive (roughly £250 / €280 / $300), before we see it getting crushed by the truck, is all to emphasise how much Light is willing to sacrifice to clear himself of suspicion, I suppose. Of course if he got it back out of the trash, L would have seen it on camera. And Light probably thinks this should be enough to clear him too because he has an obvious alibi, but it just makes L more suspicious.
    What I've always wondered is how the heck Light got the TV in there to begin with. It was a closed bag of crisps, so he must have put the TV in and somehow resealed it, and done it all outside the house so no one saw it on camera, but then he had to put the bag of crisps in the cupboard too. And assuming Light isn't the one who usually buys groceries and puts them away, wouldn't it have looked suspicious if he entered the house with 1 bag of crisps and put it with the others, only to get that same bag out that evening?
    Maybe.. he hid the bag with the TV outside and then when his mum came home with the groceries he went outside to help bring the groceries in and grabbed the crisps out of a bush and hid it with the others and brought them into the house that way? But I have to assume there are cameras outside the house as well: if you're gonna go through the trouble of hiding hundreds of cameras in someone's house, you're gonna make sure they're pointing outwards to the garden/yard as well.

Its like you said they seemed like they proved themselves innocent way too quickly. And since Light knows about the cameras the way he acted & what he said made things more suspicious also when L said about Light being smart I feel like wasn't complimenting him, but suspected him even more. I love the cat & mouse chase though at this point although I dislike Light for what he has been doing I kind of rooting for both cause I don't want the chase to end! (No spoilers) this episode helps show it, but L is very much also evil, he just is on the “good” side of this conflict.
    Him and Kira have been compared to each other a lot by both L and others, and they’re essentially playing a game with each other.
    L has already used an inmate as a Guinea pig to bait Kira, endangered the entire police force, essentially used 12 FBI agents as pawns in a chess game and referred to them as such when they died instead of actual lives, and has consistently been doing very illegal stuff. He also is extremely manipulative, and used it to get the task force and make them trust him. Specifically, last episode he said “justice will prevail” when he’s made it apparent that he doesn’t care about justice, but solving interesting cases and winning. He said that to motivate the task force. This will become much more apparent later too.

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 Před rokem +10

      I don't know if I'd call L "evil" necessarily... but he at least has a similar psychology to Light. I'd say they're similar in the sense that they aren't fully empathetic toward other people. that said... when it comes to considering the lives of others, there's heart caring, and there's head caring. heart caring is being able to properly grieve when someone dies... or at least being able to consider the grief you'd feel for someone important to you, and understand that that's an emotion which _can_ apply to someone you don't know. I think that both L and Kira are people who don't do a lot of heart caring.
      however, head caring is still something. that's the sort of thing where you have a moral code in your mind, and you know when something breaks it on a logic level. you can at least understand logically that every life has as much value to the person living it, as yours has to yourself. and even when you can't heart care about a person, you can make the conscious decision to head care about them, and do so with just as much tenacity. I think L has _much_ greater instances of head caring than Light, and a better track record of figuring out how to do right by others, even if he feels like he isn't at liberty to do what's right sometimes over the course of the Kira case.
      and yes, L does find the case fascinating. and his lack of heart care does make him seem cold when people die, and his response doesn't seem sad enough. but he's still pursuing the correction of the code of ethics that he understands and claims as his own... and you can also tell that he knows, on a logic level, that the actions he'll need to take in order to stop Kira are messed up. practically nobody would allow him to do this under normal circumstances. but there's also a reason why L considers it a loss when he is pushed to his options of last resort. just because he's willing to do these things when pressed, doesn't mean this was his first choice. and to be backed into such a corner where he has to try and convince normal, heart feeling people, to let him do something so against the morals of most... it does mean that he's had to cede ground to Kira. in the battle between L's code of ethics vs. Light's, Light has forced L to do things that he would rather not have done. but L will still only cede as little ground as possible with each incremental step toward each other that he and Light take. and it is hard to tell whether that's due to pride over the game, or a genuine wish to see one's own code of ethics return to functioning the way it normally would, or a mix of both.

      @@kamuyking551 the key flaw in your argument is that you’re assuming L is attempting to do the right thing. I am saying he very much is not as that becomes apparent later. I’m not going to spoil things, but L makes multiple decisions and says several lines that basically prove that he is letting people die/suffer for the sake of the game and for him to finally checkmate Kira, who understands and respects this.
      *Spoilers after this point*
      1. Idk if this is said here or in one of the light novels, but he said 5-10% that it was one of them, and later something like 3% that it’s light because he thought saying those percents would get the best reactions from the police force rather than his true belief of over 90% of it being light.
      2. He states that he doesn’t want Kira to die because if he does without convicting him, then L would not have won the game as it’s still ambiguous, especially if Kira has deaths going for another several months.
      3. L makes it very clear later on that he thinks it’s light, but yet does not kill him when he has the chance to for weeks at a time because it wasn’t proven.
      4. Light respected L and never really got angry. With near and mellow, he was visibly angry because they treated it as if Light was already Kira without actually catching him and we’re not playing a game, but just hunting light. Light did not respect them as he did L because they weren’t playing the game.
      5. L was frustrated because he lost pieces he thought could be valuable, not because they actually died. L has 0 regard for life at all and I’ve never seen him show any. If you have an instance, then please share

      One is, as I believe is what you were saying, is that although he doesn't suspect them now, he also knows he doesn't want to suspect them in the future. It's his family after all, you can't have that kind of thing itching the back of your mind. And so needs that peace of mind of proving it to himself.
      The other side that I think is more obvious to most and tends to overshadow the also meaningful reason previously stated, is simply that he needs them cleared of suspicion from Ls perspective and he needs to show resolve in the case as apposed to if he was against it and merely raised suspicion of everyone including himself.
      Put those two together and L practically forced him to go along with it.

It's like when a criminal wipes down their crime scene to remove their finger prints, but a room with absolutely _no_ fingerprints just confirms that a it got wiped down because you'd expect a room to have normal-use fingerprints in it. If you _really_ want to cover your tracks, don't just wipe away the fingerprints, leave behind decoy prints. Light should have waited to do his potato chip stunt, instead of doing it right from day 1. He understood that back when he got Penber's bame on the bus, that it'd be suspicious to kill him immediately after that, so he let it simmer a while first. When he saw that he was being watched by cameras, he should have let it simmer a couple of days, then gone out to buy the magazine, wait a few more days, then do the potato chip TV thing, and that would have been an order of magnitude more convincing. But he also felt the time crunch because he needed to be able to get back to writing names so he needed to deal with the situation sooner rather than later.

    The thing about this episode is, because Light killed 2 people who did minor crimes the moment they were broadcast on the news without having any visible ability to have known about them... but doing this as these two houses are under extreme surveillance, makes it look like Kira knows at least one of these houses is being so tightly watched and wants to prove that it can't be anyone there, or at least that no amount of surveillance will discover him. It makes the households look guilty in their innocence. It would have been less suspicious if Light simply allowed the month of scheduled heart attack murders to continue as normal.
    If I were in Light's shoes, in keeping with his plan to appear innocent while getting closer to L, what I would have done is this. First of all, I would not have the dirty magazines in my room to appear like a normal teenager. Clearly, as Light, I am not a normal teenager. My room does not have security measures in place to hide the fact that I look at pictures of girls. Instead, I'd go along the same line he did when he instantly spoke against the 1,500 investigators announcement. I'd have set in place that I have my room secure as it was because I am conducting my own investigation against Kira, and don't want anyone to know about it. L would witness me going into my room and writing down some key info that seems possible for me to figure out, and he might read some of the other details I have written down and discover that I have realized a few things that he thought only he could figure out. I'd probably increase his suspicion of me a little bit, as it is L, but not as much as appearing too innocent. On top of that, he might want to bring me on board to his task force as he'd see that I was of value as an investigator, thus getting me closer to him. I certainly would not kill those two minor criminals as any deviation in Kira's behavior when L takes action is instantly seen as suspicious and allowing criminals to die as planned would raise no alarms. It wouldn't throw the 'I couldn't have known about those two' wrench in the system, but it also wouldn't bring on the 'he must know he's being watched' idea, either. It has the effect of surveillance being pointless all the same.
    Maybe I am missing something there, but then again, if I was Kira, I'd never have killed Lind L. Taylor, either, and would have avoided that whole mess to begin with. I wouldn't have been so arrogant to think that nobody would be able to figure me out, and I wouldn't deviate from killing known criminals. Of course, as you no doubt know from having seen the entire thing by now, its so much worse than that. His ultimate goal is honestly going further than I would ever go, even if I chose to do what he's doing.

    I did come out liking L more, but as far as rooting for someone goes, I felt like Ryuk, who was just watching stuff happen and was curious as to how things would turn out. I guess the only thing that would tip the scale would be that L is trying to stop one person from trying to become god, and that’s kind of better than the guy killing people left and right to become god, right xD
