- Stillman’s Portrait is about a gay 28 year old in New York who is struggling to paint a self-portait for his solo debut at a Chelsea gallery. In search of inspiration, in the form of an old portrait, Stillman journeys to his seaside hometown where he faces the trial of reuniting with his estranged father at the family's boat workshop.
I can't believe how long it has taken me to release this short film into the world. I originally wrote this as a way to come out to my grandfather but sadly he passed away around the time of the production. After many a setbacks, here it is... My first independent short film. It wouldn't have been possible without the incredible effort from a talented group of filmmakers and friends I met at NYU and Click3X, overwhelming support from indiegogo donors and the Port Jefferson community out in Long Island, NY.

Just finished watching Stillman's Portrait. Fathers; they can be a best friend or a malevolent stranger. This is a strong piece, I feel. I was caught in the story; strong performances and visuals. I hope you're continuing to create.
Amazing work of art. Perfect light, cuts, acting, colors...The film itself its a beautiful paint in every sense. It touched my soul in so many ways. Countless gay people went or are in the same or similar situation. To some was the mother that rejected them, me included in this group, to others mother and father. His courage to do what was "needed" was well connected with his ability to get out of what was making it impossible for him to paint a self painting.
It only made me want see more of your work...I have the feeling that this beautiful movie will help many people to accept themselves and, to paint a beautiful (imaginary or real) paint of themselves as, in my mind, he finally was able to do.

A powerful film. Kudos to the writer/director. The dialogue, cinematography and even the colors set the mood and the tone. Both loss and acceptance all poured into the main character's (art) work and also into this very film by the writer/director. Do NOT stop making films- this was a (short) masterpiece. Excellent film, I'm one of the lucky guys. When I told my Dad I was gay he took a step back looked at me and said "So, it's not like it's illegal!".
And that was pretty much it. He was always very accepting of it and always treated my partner just like any of the kids. My Mom also treats him just like the rest of the family.
I'm lucky both of my parents are very supportive of us we've been together now for 23 years.

Thank you sooo much for creating this film. Regardless of the outcome with his father, he seemed very relieved with himself at the end. Him smiling at the broken mirror at the end is very similar to what I'm dealing with now. Thank you again for creating an amazing film

Fr. I feel like we didn't get to explore the dad's reaction enough. I really thought for a minute that he was gonna tell him that he's dying and that's why it'd be impractical to take the hike to NYC for him. Kinda feel like maybe he wanted to say it but didn't wanna take away from his son's moment, as much pain as it gave him. I'm really hoping he went to the exhibition, too, hypothetically speaking 😂😂 cause I mean, he did say he'd always be proud of him right before he came out. Anyway, I agree.
The plot is amazing. The chronological scenes deliver the message. Amazing stills and angles, they show cased a lot, actors perfectly cast. The drawings were touching and the coming out was so touching. This, most certainly, has had a finger laid on each and everyone of the viewers. AH-MAY-ZING 😭😭😭😭

The unspoken emotional nuances of this stunning film is palpable and permeates throughout, much like life, it leaves one to yearn for something more...I wanted to see a prologue of Stillman's life with his dad prior so that I can get a better understanding of what led them to this heart breaking point on the lake... Bravo!
Maybe it’s time I pull that old feature script for stillman out and give it a revisit!

Excellent, in many ways! It's very condensed, in terms of highlighting an array of different thoughts/emotions within a narrow time/space frame. Lots of nice things to say about this film, Mr. Davy. Here's one: the young self-portrait of Stillman is actually GOOD. Usually stories about artists feature work that is ho-hum or worse. But your choice made me want to see not just more of the story, but more of the work by your real-life painter.
Awwww thank you tom for the kind comments. The painting was important to me as my father actually had painted it especially for this project. He no longer paints figuratively so it was quite special for him to go back to this for me.

I know this is a short film...but I feel it could have been just a tad bit longer. Maybe show Stillman finishing the work and being at the art show with his finished self portrait. Then someone buying the piece at the art show that turns out to be his dad.
Thanks for your comments and notes! I sincerely appreciate it. I wish I could add more to this story but unfortunately I shot this back in 2015 when I was 20yo. Maybe if I got a chance to make this into a feature, I'll be able to elaborate more and develop the story a bit more.

Hi, I totally I agree with you! I think that it is important to acknowledge the fact that artists come from many different places. At the time when I was directing this film I was an international student from Hong Kong studying at NYU, I wanted to tell a story I was very familiar with as otherwise I would find a hard time relating to my own character. I honestly am not too familiar of what it is like to grow up in a town or village aside from travelling back to New Zealand where my dad is from for an extended period of time every year or two. For me, my Kiwi half has allowed me to sympathise with the struggles of being an artisanal craftsman in a small town and acknowledge the difficulties, but honestly, I still can't fully wrap my head around the experiences of people who grew up/live in a small town. That influenced my decision to have a character that harks back to his past quite literally but returns to the city. I am hoping that once Covid is over I could maybe spend a year in a small town to expand my own personal experience.

Lol not to nitpick, but I noticed his eyes were blue in the portrait at his dad's house, but he has brown eyes. Very good film though.

He does not have dementia. Imagine if you saw someone that looked like your son but was coming in to ask about a job plus you're wearing your near sighted glasses. You wouldn't necessarily think that is your son.

@@joshuadavy5293 Thanks... I lost Mom 2 years ago, 3 days before Easter, to cancer. Everyone keeps telling me I am depressed, but do a good job of hiding it. I want to laugh, because if I am doing a good job of hiding it, how do they know I am depressed?
When asked if I am depressed or suicidal, I always tell them, depressed, yes, suicidal, never. Which is another reason I want to laugh when people say I do a good job of hiding my depression. My doctor thinks I should get a pet or roommate... I wouldn't mind doing both.

@@jamesbutts9202 Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself here. It must be quite hard, I’m not sure how you manage that. We are social beings so it’s good to always maintain communication with a few people. I’ve gone through my share of depression and anxiety, very different circumstances though, but I learnt that it’s also just your body telling you to rethink and reconsider how you see yourself and who you truly are. If you think you can take care of another living being, definitely get a pet because they bring you such joy (especially dogs). Its also nice to interact with people, as you always learn something from everyone you meet, interact and live with! One of the things I think many people need are hobbies or things that bring people together, I.e book clubs, comicon, sports, dancing and etc. roommates are always a bit of a challenge since you’re literally living with them. I’ve recently met some lovely people in my pottery class . Really good people. I’m fortunate though as im in Hong Kong with no lockdown. If it’s hard to get out and meet people, use the internet, many online activities and things you can do! Just got to manage your perspective on the situations, learn from the negatives and find the positive side in all circumstances. Easier said than done but by at least trying is the first step!

In three weeks, I will be getting a puppy... just waiting for him to be old enough to leave his mother. I am super excited.

The whole short film mi opinion personal was when you father he asking you about you got girlfriends why they never ask you got boyfriend we are in 2020 not 1950 Good one short film congratulations??
I agree. It's a shame that to this day many people are still stuck in their beliefs on homosexuality. But my own personal intention for this film is to encourage people with more "conservative" ideologies to face the fact that their children will move on without them to live their own lives. I hope that the film encourages these "conservative" people to reach out and reconnect with their loved ones. Thank you again for your comment!
I found it odd that the father did not recognize his son after only 7 years. Surely there would have been something. Stillman was, after all, an adult when he left. Can the trauma of never coming out to ones father and feeling the unconditional validation that can bring a man, ever be healed? Or will it follow him through life colouring his past and clouding his future?
That is a very hard question to answer and I truly think it would depend one the person and their ability to reflect. I explained earlier: "Imagine if you saw someone that looked like your son but was coming in to ask about a job plus you're wearing your near sighted glasses. You wouldn't necessarily think that is your son." But now that there are two comments. Definitely could've worked on that part and explored it ore.

I read a comment of your about the moments when life slows down……the quiet stillness. Me too. Those spaces are riveting. Marco Berger is a master at that I think. His Hawaii is a masterclass in simply allowing the piece to breathe.
Where is the location for the seaside segment? It didn't look like seawater, more like a lake.
It was shot by the sea on the north shore of Long Island.

I agree! I was a naive filmmaker who picked up smoking to deal with problems and that reflected in my films. I'm learning to make wiser decisions for each characters actions. Thanks for noticing and calling it out. Much appreciated!

Not everything one makes is going to work for everyone. Plus... to be honest, it's one of the first films I wrote when I was 18. There is so much I'd do differently but gotta just stay by the decisions I made at the time. Now I'm curious... what sort of ending are YOU interested in watching? :)
@@joshuadavy5293 I feel that it lacked a conclusion. He avoided coming out to his father and when he did his worst fear became real so he just went back to his life as before. Was that confrontation with his dad enough to continue life unaffected or is this going to have an impact and liberate him. Seems like he avoids his feelings towards his dad. Too many unanswered questions. The ending does not have to be happy but it needs an ending.

Yeah, looking back it might've been more interesting if he still was unable to paint or if he simply didn't seem like he moved on completely but just painted anyway without destroying the canvas.
Joshua, I liked the ending. He was clearly more able to look at himself in the mirror. And that very subtle little smile spoke VOLUMES. Given the quality of his old portrait in his dad's room, I left with the inference (intended or not) that my face in his worst fear, he was able to get past the artistic block he had been dealing with.
You may have written this when you were very young, but I thought this short film was just masterful. not only the writing but everything about the production value. Robert Brinkmann carried the film very well.

That is sad when parents cant except their own child for what they are . if they were a drug addict or something they seem to accept that though
You bring up an interesting point, why is that parents find it so hard to accept some things like sexuality or gender identity? Maybe it is their own expectations of their children’s life

The oil painting was painted by my father. Most of the other sketches were done by Maria Marrone (art director) and me!

It was well acted, well shot, the timing was perfect and it was a good short but, for once, it would be nice to have some gay films that are not tortured guys having some sort of miserable personal catastrophe. Yes, this does happen but schoolboy romances and tortured gays do seem to dominate LGBTQ representation. Constant angst is just not representative of most people's daily lives. Any chance of turning your consummate skills to something with some light in it?
I think there are so many angsty gay films because so many have been through something similar. They make people feel seen for a change.

Off script leaving me with more questions.. and that dad was an asshole to me...even before he rejected his son, he was cold..
But maybe I'm slow and missed the finer points of your film..
