  • Steve Cripps, Managing Director, PMC Construction; Sherif Harding, Head of Major & International Capital Sales, Stadium Solutions, an Arena Company; and Matthew Williams, Director, HGP Architects, describe the redevelopment of Fratton Park.
The trio outline the journey, from Michael Eisner taking over Portsmouth Football Club in 2017, and working with his architect Robert AM Stern Architects to conceptualise the reimagining of Fratton Park, to The Tornate Company commissioning the project, which saw PMC Construction; Stadium Solutions, an Arena Company; HGP Architects; and engineers HRW; working closely with Michael and his family, his architect Robert Stern, Portsmouth FC's Andrew Cullen, CEO, Tony Brown, COO, and Marie Stedman, Stadium Manager, to bring the project to life.

Staying at Fratton Park was the right thing to do. Fans love the uniqueness of the ground and its atmosphere and the renovations have made it beautiful too. There is room for expansion as well. If just the North stand gets renovated the capacity can go up to 27,000. That’s enough anyway without moving to a soulless bowl.
    👍🏻⭐️🌙

I am old enough to remember when Pompay were champions. I can not see that creating a slightly more modern 20000 seater ground is what the fans deserve. Surely it could be quite easily increased to 30000+ . This is one of England's sleeping giants. It could/should far outstrip any other Southern club outside London

Its a shame Portsmouth never got to build the new stadium in Gunwharf Quays . The design was brilliant and would have been one of the most iconic in the country.

Needs to be bigger. Any club with 75% of capacity season ticket holders needs a bigger stadium.

I remember this kid running around The Swan in Cosham as a 12 year old. Very rich now I assume? However, if you think it's progress to knock Fratton Park about and call it "modernising" then you're wrong.
It used to hold over 45,000 and I've been there in amongst crowds of that size back in the 1960's. The atmosphere then was exactly the same as now, it's nothing new.
Having just 20,000 in there and calling that progress is insulting to all fans. It's just another building company making money out of work that didn't need to be done in the first place. Only the under 40's would complain as they weren't there when it held big crowds. They were still in nappies or not born.
All these so called "improvements" have done is decrease the amount of people who can watch Pompey and satisfy the ridiculous laws that say grown men and women can't be trusted to stand up watch a football match without anyone getting injured.
For the record, I stood on The Kop at Anfield in 1972 when it held 23,000, all standing. Something I will never ever forget. Going with the flow from side to side all game and singing to my hearts content and guess what......?
    Nobody ever got hurt!
Sorry for that all you woke youngsters but it's true. It's called being grown up.

Like it or not, having 20k in there when we were heading towards a maximum of 14k IS progress. The 1970s aren't coming back and FP is looking great

The work did need doing; the stadium was falling apart.
Also, you didn't get hurt but others did. You just didn't know about it. Take your rose tinted glasses off.
You may be a grown up but you still need to grow up it seems.

I remember standing on the south terrace versus Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in 1980. A crowd of 33,000 IIRC. Heady atmosphere but a crap view to be truthful. Also recall my mate breaking a rib when pushed against a crush barrier at Brentford away in around 1983.
You're an idiot if you thought grounds were safe or pleansant places to be back then. Heysel? The Bradford Fire? Leppings Lane?
Sorry mate, you've either got a defective memory or you're a simpleton.
