  • The nickel ore extraction industry is booming in the Philippines, be it on the islands of Sibuyan, Palawan or Luzon. Nickel is mainly known for its use in stainless steel, but is also used for the production of lithium batteries for solar panels and electric vehicles. The metal is therefore a key component of the energy transition.

They should be campaigning against this. The Philippines is still full of wild untouched villages, jungles, coastlines and the most beautiful diving waters you can experience

The mining sector should really be more responsible and mindful of the safety of people and the protection of the environment as much as possible.
Those who are advocating for total mining ban should stop using anything that has mineral components or made, transported, stored in a manner in which minerals are involved. That includes using their phones or the internet.

Geologist here, what the man saying to be the original soil are alluvium (river bed sand deposits), common in low-lying areas of Zambales. The mining operation is actually extracting the soil at the Zambales highlands. Those two are really different. The common problems for these highlands are the erosion of those red muddy soil uphigh to the low-lying areas near a river. Whether the erosion of these soils are exacerbated by the mining operation, a study should be conducted. Mining sites usually employ several measures to insure that erosion is mitigated or contained within their tenement areas.
Unfortunately, those virgin forests will inevitably be disturb. Mining companies usually employs foresters to eventually restore these mining sites after extraction.
A decision should be made if the economic prosperity given by the mineral extractions outweighs the environmental cause. But right now the soil being extracted are sold and processed overseas to China, missing out on the opportunity to utilized these Philippine resource in nation building.

Watching this from Manila, it makes me sad. The presence of nickel should be a boon to the country and its citizens. But it has to be dealt with in a sustainable manner.
The irony that people are using nickel to produce electric cars that are supposed to be better for the environment is not lost on me. Do it, but do it right. This should be for the benefit, and not the detriment, for the country and its people.
