We now know that mental disorders and the symptoms manifest at varying degrees for different people (on a spectrum). This is one of the reasons why a dimensional model is so important.

I have bipolar, but with my high and low stages, I feel more schizoid, as both sides of me don't care about sexual encounters, connecting etc, but will take risks where I will be more up for banter/social stuff in my own way (basically extremely naive and 'fuck it' attitude) whereas in my lows, I can't even step outside the house without having a panic attack and am just completely non-descript in my expression. I have a lot of obsessive-compulsive actions in both highs and lows-in my highs, I will eat more, drink more, socialize more, exercise more, basically excess stuff and more risky stuff. In my lows, I clean more, control calorie intake more, exercise more from panic of putting on weight, have irrational thoughts/obsess over phobias or irrational thoughts and worries etc.

i have been studying narcissism. i lived with an overt narc then a covert narc for a total of 30 years. the overt narc matches up to the DSM, but the covert presents SOME of the same traits only they go about it in passive aggressive, sneaky, mind manipulation. they can act completely normal for most people. they tend to only abuse in the home or with one person. they are not arrogant or grandiose or quite a few of the traits in the DSM. they need a whole new category. the brain washing, gas lighting, mind manipulation is extremely dangerous. they don't get put in jail much, but they ruin many lives to the point they make their victim mentally unstable or want to kill themselves. i wish the mental health professionals did more about them.

Sounds like my Dad - super-charming in general, poison if you are close family ... 😕 I've tried to find out more about what happened in the home when my Dad/Auntie were young, but that has not been easy ... I know a bit about what happened, and my Auntie was thrown out of home when she was a mid-teen; supposedly, my Dad had a breakdown around the same time (he was a few years younger) ... It is a deterministic universe, so it's all cause & effect ... such an intricate causal web, though ...

Hey, I thought I had written this - exactly the same experience as yours! The covert narcs in my case seem to have a few cross-overs into the other personality disorders i.e. histrionic - excessive attention-seeking and sexual behaviour. Maybe they should have a category all of their own! My mother is a narcissist, both my ex husbands too (6 years with the first and 30 years with the second), my eldest daughter is a diagnosed Borderline and the two younger daughters copy their father's disrespectful behaviour towards me too. I know I am not perfect and probably have a real crazy streak of my own, but I do not deserve to be treated this way by my own family. Over the last three years, I systematically got rid of all of them and have been narc-free for the last 9 months and for the first time ever, feel real freedom and happiness!

Everything is thoughtfully explained in an easy-to-understand way & I like the way you refer to studies to support what you're describing. I wish I had come across your channel sooner. About 4 years ago I started to investigate personality disorders because I hoped to gain a clearer understanding of a former partner who had recently committed suicide. I do enjoy hearing the debate over the different models between the scientists. I recently took a test and scored highest in my number of Schizoid traits, however I also showed pretty strong in Avoidant, Narcissistic, Anti-Social, Histrionic, Borderline and OCPD and traits I have from those, if I remember correctly. Watching videos like these is probably not good for me, because I am constantly looking at the different disorders and going "I got that trait, and that one, and that one over there, etc," However the test I took has reconfirmed to me the belief I've had for a long time and set forth at the end of this video of more of a "spectrum" type model, rather than purely a categorical model that they have now.

This overview is helpful, particularly regarding comprehension of inclusion of disorders in clusters A-C. I am curious to know the factors associated with disorders that remain stable and others that may decrease in severity over time. I can appreciate both arguments for the dimensional versus categorical debate over classification of the DSM. I believe this information is especially important for CMH students. There are a number of aspects included in Section III of DSM-5 that I find helpful, such as the Alternative Model for personality disorders and conditions for further study.

I am a high school student, and I have a problem where I view myself differently depending on the people I am around, and it causes me to act differently as well. With a lot of people I feel inferior and weak. My personality changes depending on who is talking to me. Also, I am always concentrated on what others are viewing me as, and every movement I make I am subconscious about. I think I really relate to the avoident personality disorder, but I still don't understand why I feel like a different person and why my personality changes depending on who I am around.

Sounds like you need to work on your self compassion. Be kind to yourself, slow down and take a breath, and you’ll start to realize two things:
1.) Everyone around you is also focused on themselves just like you are.
2.)You’re not inferior. Everyone else is having the same hell of a time trying to figure out life. They just pretend otherwise.

That's pretty much on par with the stage of life you're in, try not to worry yourself about it- self diagnosis can be a slippery slope, and should be avoided. Practice more self care, and your self esteem & confidence will strengthen over time. By doing so, you'll probably begin to notice the quality of friends you attract and surround yourself with with also improve ❤
      Best wishes,

I have really become a fan of your videos since I found your channel a while back! I had a question that I haven't seen covered much; could you explain the differences between the higher functioning end of ASD (so I guess what would used to be referred to as HFA or Aspergers Syndrome) and BPD? Specifically when diagnosing an adult, so without much reference to early-childhood behavior?
I have read several published pieces on the differential dianosis of the two disorders, but I ask because I'm a male that has been diagnosed with BPD and have subsequently had it changed to ASD but different practicioners still can't agree on which it is.
There just seems to be so much overlap in symptomology, at least on the surface, and especially in females who seem to be frequently misdiagnosed with BPD rather than ASD.
If anyone is curious than I can provide links to the articles and studies that I mentioned previously ☺

I would like to read those and would also like a video on the topic of ASD and BPD.
I'm a male diagnosed with ASD and I've got BPD traits. I have 7 BPD traits but a lot of that is just the ASD overlapping. There are like 3 or 4 of the symptom criteria that aren't explained by my ASD.

The discussion of categorical and dimensional models at the end could be expanded into an entire video. I see value in the categorical model while acknowledging its weaknesses. Many clients must navigate through a frustrating mental health system for months and years before receiving a well-considered categorical diagnosis. Generally a client who is actively seeking help is very much relieved to finally have a categorical diagnosis so that more effective treatment can begin. Obviously a diagnostic criterion such as "must exhibit at least 3 of the following 5 traits" is not intellectually rigorous. It is primarily meant to be a practical way to eliminate alternative diagnoses. I don't see how a dimensional model could be implemented on a wide scale, but I'm willing to be enlightened.

I work in the field of mental health - I'm a clinician working specifically with homeless + SMI population, which unexpectedly is quite often co-occurring in nature. My question is this: how do you tease out the symptomology of a SMI when there are co-occurring presenting factors indicating co-occurring substance use and/or personality disorder? And how do you avoid the inevitable cognitive bias when it comes to diagnosing a personality disorder? I could very well qualify for a lot of the PD diagnostic criteria as it is - categorical - a check-list of 'symptom', and yet we all know it's vastly more complex to identify a personality which has become 'disordered'... please excuse my obtuse question. A bottle of wine is the culprit! (No SUDS's as far as I can tell!) What I'm trying to ask is this: at what point can you qualify behavior as a 'disordered personality'?

I agree that the categorical model is very 'clumsy' (and can see that it is a (big, imho) compromise, in the interest of 'ease' of/expeditious use) ... but there seems to be a lot of comorbidity of the discreet factors, so many patients must end up being lumped in more than one category, I would imagine (or often just the category of best/most apparent fit) ... ? Very interesting ... not difficult, I think, to realise, quite intuitively, that real people are not going to fit well within neat little boxes ...

I have low affective empathy though I suspect it has increased in the last couple of years in regard to physical pain. I mostly function on cognitive empathy.. I do feel like I have a couple of traits of several of these personality disorders covered in this video. I'm guessing though its a matter how consistently displaying these traits though right?

    • @lylakittie139

Yeah, that's a narcissist, like Angela said. A lot of people do this up to and during their pre-teen years, but grow out of it when they realize how obvious/ineffective the tactic is. It's a blend of pathological lying and gaslighting. I don't think they do it on purpose, I think they do it because they genuinely think that people don't remember details. Narcissists also see the external world as something they move fluidly through, kind of like a dream in which they alone are able to get away with certain things.

I feel like I may have a personality disorder. I don’t want to be the sort of person that self diagnoses but I also don’t want to go to a therapist because I feel like these cases are quite extreme and I may be exaggerating my situation. Also, I am scared of being misdiagnosed. I understand that my way of thinking is likely due to the stigma associated with mental health disorders and that therapy is good for everyone, but knowing that doesn’t really motivate me to go any more. I think I might be afraid of going, but I don’t know why I would be. Any advice?

I'm in your exact position. Honestly, I would want to go to a therapist just so I can understand myself more and what to do. It's better to know something than not know anything at all.

(Sorry if this is too personal) but have you ever seen bits of yourself in any personality disorder /mood disorder or the five factor model ? Maybe you could do a video on that.

Borderline+Covert Narcissistic personality disorder + Histrionic ability in one per persons than the individuals with
Schizoid + Dependent + Anxiety Personality disorder who does not plays in a major role in the listed cluster B segment

This is a great overview. I did not know about cluster A disorders before. I am very curious about the effects of these personalities on the children of these people. I suspect I have 2 schizoid parents. I have always been deeply afraid of becoming schizophrenic and never really knew why as I do not have schizophrenia in my family. At least I don't think I do. But I am curious what exactly that link is between these disorders and schizophrenia.

I don’t know what I have! For a week straight I will literally lose my hair from anxiety and paranoia of anything. Like loosing a job etc. Then the next week I do not give a single shit at all. I just don’t care. Then the next week I’m extremely low and want to kill myself. The week after that I’m extremely up and want to be a superstar and take over the world. I literally switch through all of these and each of them are Extreme!!! I’ll get an idea when I’m in one mood, then the next mood I will look at what I’m doing and be like wtf you don’t even like that. 1 minute I love people the next I couldn’t care if they died. Wtf is it😂

Is a personality disorder diagnosis a necessary component of successful therapy and eventually leading a happy, fulfilled life? I've been to my share of psychiatrists but the diagnosis always comes out major depressive disorder. I've long thought I've had some underlying personality defect that would explain why, despite being on medication for 15+ years, my depression has never fully been in check and I haven't advanced very far along the socially accepted lifepath.
