It’s real name is “Cuetlaxochitl” and it is a Mexican flower that was revered and cultivated by the Aztec people. When the colonizers evangelized the indigenous community they switched the name of the flower to Spanish “Flor de Noche Buena” (flower of the blessed night). Then, this white dude Poinsett who was an ambassador to Mexico (and hated Native Americans btw) introduced the flower to the US. Another white dude decided it was OK to re-name OUR flower after Poinsett even though he was literally kicked out of Mexico... fucking hate the name Poinsettia.
