  • OK, I'm gonna do speed testing! Not with a radar gun but with GPS instead. There will be plenty of comments about how this is not accurate but no proof with be offered as to why GPS is any less accurate than radar gun measurements.

    So this week I've been doing this. I added gps to the diatone mamba full stack. On this build I also just replaced receiver and vtx. Yesterday I tested the GPS and the other components. This after noon I went ahead and tested rescue mode. Success. I'm still in metric for testing distance so I have no real clue what speed I'm going in mph or if it's accurate. Great video.

    This might be a good addition for any quad. It's a $12 insurance policy (when RTH is setup) at the expense of 5-6g, a UART,and a little bit of space. With the added benefit of GPS speed. I need to order a few of these for current and future builds.

    Great vid Albert. I'm curious to see how well the GPS works sitting about 10mm-15mm above
    the flight stack. In my experience with a diatone GT200 the BN-180 GPS
    did not pick up satellites well until I put it on a pedestal 30mm or
    greater above the flight stack. If this works well for you I will add one to my R349.

      Very good job explaining/install the gps. 1st:When installing my first GPS i was very hesitant so the step x step is great. 2nd: I just realized watching your install for the 3rd time that we do not need the telemetry turned on in betaflight to get the GPS readings in the OSD! I didnt know that? That is why i questioned you in the above reply about where you were connecting the telemetry wire. (i thought you were using FPort but didnt see it in the Port page and that started me investigating)

    • @amisoftau2659
      @amisoftau2659 Před 5 lety +2

      @@maxiemusfpv198 The 220 has on board flash memory, allows saving (and rebooting/powering to) saved settings. We don't really need that, as BF and ArduPilot can both auto-program the GPS at FC startup. I assume that iNav can too. If you're running other custom FC firmware or Arduino etc, you may want to program the BN-220 once as desired using u-center and flash the settings.
      The 180 is slightly lighter and smaller than the 220. Other than that it's the same as the 220 but without the flash memory.

    Hey Albert, fantastic vid, I am setting up my R349 quad and the same GPS right now but ran into a prob, just about to solder and realized the positive (right) stem from the Capacitor is loose and has ripped the pad off the board. What would you do? Can I move the capacitor, even if I add wires to it so I can place anywhere, and then add the GPS wires to it? Looking at the 2 Far Right Pads, GND and VCC, would they work? Brigzy.

    • @AlbertKimTV
      @AlbertKimTV  Před 5 lety +1

      Are you talking about the small cap on the FC or the large on on the battery lead? If the pads are ripped off, and it's the small one, you can just find another pad anywhere on the FC that is the same as the one that got ripped off. Since it's positive that must be 5v, so you can just solder a wire to the leg and the other end to a 5v pad elsewhere.

    • @BrigzyFPV
      @BrigzyFPV Před 5 lety

      @@AlbertKimTV Thx, it's the FC capacitor, on the back of the FC, one pad ripped off. (Not the ESC Board or lipo battery lead, can't see one there?). I did what you said I believe, I removed the Cap, I added 3 inch wires to it, heatshrink etc..(will poke the Cap in somewhere later) I then soldered the Cap wires to the front right of the FC onto 5v and GND pads. I also spliced in the 2 wires (red and black) for the GPS so it will have 5v and GND too. I then soldered the white and green GPS wires to the TX6 and RX6 pads like you did, so I think that's pretty much what you said. Thx for that :{) Bit messy but should work.

The GPS is working fine in the configurator, and before arming I see the sat count on the OSD go up. When reached ~12, I arm it but then it disappears :(. Any ideas?

    • @AlbertKimTV
      @AlbertKimTV  Před 5 lety +1

      Well without knowing what model GPS you're using or how you have it wired up, I'm going to assume the GPS lost power when you armed. So check how it it powered and if whatever is supplying power is enough or too much.
