I’m 54 . I was a sophomore in HS when this came out. We were there for all of Madonna firsts. We literally dressed like this and like her . She and her music were so influential u have no idea. Little did we know she would be Epic forever and an Icon our entire lives. Who am I fooling? We totally knew this was going to happen . ⭐️
So true Paula. Her influence is still rippling outward as generation after generation unknowingly continue to be affected by her influence on culture.
I was a senior in High School when I graduated 😢 Now I’m 56 😮 Wow it was so long ago ❤
Same age, what a time to be a teen. She was otherworldly.
Absolute! When I was 15 in 1987 I showed up for my confirmation camp in Madonna cloths. The priest was not that happy. 😂
@@samhartford8677 hahaha from one Catholic girl to another. You knew Madonna would’ve done the same 😉⭐️
It's so difficult these days to understand the impact she made. Her importance in popular culture/music is unmatched. There is no comparison with Taylor, Beyonce etc & the 'stars' off today, not because of vocal abilities, but you need to remember, we had no social media, no mobile phones, no entertainment channels in the way we do now. Her impact was worldwide, whether you loved or hated her, you knew & seen her. Nothing matches that. This song is so simple and one of her best
yeah true Madge is a one off, and like you mentioned everybody knows Madonna. If you had to ask me to name a Taylor Swift song i couldn't do it, same with Adele, Pink and the rest of the female singers of today who are garbage in my opinion. They might do a couple of good songs but they don't have the presence that Madonna had. Infact that Adele woman depresses me and i've heard other people say the same. I detest shows like Uk's Got Talent and X Factor because they're just filled with talentless wannabe idiots, look at the fuss that was made over that Susan Boyle. No way would she have sold a record in the 80s.
Well said!!! Absolutely!! No comparison. Madonna is the whole package of everything!!
not difficult for our generation sorry x
She didn't move on. The guy was a model scout and put her in a photoshoot. When the guy who rejected her saw her on the magazine cover he realized what he was losing and got his act together.
Still remains one of my favourite songs from madonna
@Marvin MQZ definitely a 10 out of 10
I'm glad you guys loved the Lalala fade which I've always thought was beautiful and that it was short for you.
Well thankfully there's a bunch of really great remixes and extended versions of this great classic. Look for it. You'll be addicted.
This song and video is how I fell in love with her and knew she was the shit back then. Till this day.
Loved this song when it came out and all these years later still do. A lot of Madonna's songs just don't get tired.
Yeah, it's that simplicity to them. It's the Italian sense of melody that is coming through. Even her underrated stuff is really good.
@@samhartford8677 I remember buying her first album and I knew absolutely nothing about her- I just really liked the album cover. When I listened to it I remember thinking she was going to be huge.
I believe this and "Lucky Star" were her first to single releases and videos...MTV had such a huge impact on the music industry, videos became nearly as important as the single release itself
Her first top ten in Billboard Hot 100 chart. A Star was born. Now she's got 38 top ten songs, more than any other women. Long live the Queen!
Second top 10, Lucky Star was first
@@primalrunner No, it isn't. Her first top ten was Borderline, Lucky Star was her first top five.
Alas, Taylor Swift passed her last year when her latest album's tracks all debuted in the Top 10 at the same time. Swift has 40 Top 10s but this happened in a different era when tracks and streaming determine the charts rather than singles, sales, and radio play.
@@epcheung Indeed, Billboard should divide the eras, pre & post streaming. But I'm not worried, those are numbers just for the US, worldwide Madonna will never be surpassed.
My favourite Madonna song. Period.
This was when she was just staring to rise in the music charts in 1983
I remember when this video came out and you just knew she was going to be huge.
This was the first hit of her i noticed.

It's hard to fully appreciate today and looking backwards in time how Madonna exploded like a meteorite and the effect she had on culture - nowadays we have access to stars 24/7 but the world was much smaller then and much of what we see today in the stars can be directly traced back to her.
I try to explain this to younger people. Remember how exciting it was to see a glimpse of her on a Magazine? Or how thrilling it was when she would be on TV. A new video from her many times was like a worldwide event. She was so mysterious and enigmatic. I miss those times before we had unlimited instant access to any media. Things were more exiting. And now, being famous isn't even like a big deal... people are famous just for being rich brats. Madonna was something different. She was like a god.
@@ffrraa348 So true, in the UK we'd have to wait for the music magazines which came out every two weeks to see her. I think it's really hard for young people to even conceptualise a world which didn't have mobile phones, the internet and immediate access etc. The only way I saw videos was on the tv, we had no MTV in the UK and it wasn't until I bought the Immaculate Collection on video that I even saw the endings of most Madonna vidoes because tv shows usually edited them down! Can you imagine that now!
@@catschorus4684 good times. I miss the way things used to be. Wish we could go back.
I just love this Madonna from the early 80s.
Whenever I think of her, it's kinda this image popping into my mind about her, she',ll never be an old lady for me, never.
You guys have developed a great sense of humor about thinking you've got these Madonna videos all figured out! 😉😀
Maybe this one has an air of familiarity because she was basically creating the template for pop music videos at this time. It's like when people say "oh Madonna looked so 80s"....no, actually the 80s looked so Madonna.
It would be interesting for you to react to her 2016 live performance of this on Jimmy Fallon. It's a great reinterpretation that's more stripped back and soulful.
(BTW she wasn't on the show to promote anything, she just begged Jimmy to let her come on that night because Obama was gonna be there and she was desperate to meet him)
But anyway, it's a great "grown-up" version of the song.
Great comment
Madonna's early songs had all these relentlessly charging basslines. Makes them delicious to this day.
Aaaah borderline!!! You should check out the live version of this in the Sticky and Sweet Tour. She rarely does this live but she went all out on the performance in that concert.
This song and video exudes Madonna, NYC, and NYC Art scene.
Great song. My all time favorite Madonna’s single. I was 13 years old when it was released and at that time a lot of girls and boys wanted to be her, or to be with her…
You said exactly what I've always thought: the outtro with Madonna's 'na na na na' is so nice and melancholic, and indeed SO SHORT! It should have been longer.
(But then again, just BC it's so short is has an extra attractiveness maybe 🙂)
"Borderline” is the fifth single of Madonna's debut album and a prime example of why Madonna is considered one of the architects of the music video format. Music critics and writers rush yearly to crown the "song of the summer.” In the summer of '84, before she was the Queen of Pop, Madonna owned that crown when “Borderline” became the summer anthem. The music video is one of Madonna’s most beloved and iconic, helping cement her “boy toy” image. The stylish video shows a young Madonna being discovered by a talent scout and rocketing to fame as a cover model, as her hunky and cute boyfriend feels abandoned on the sidelines. The video switches between color to black and white, with Madonna’s first “in video” acting as she fights with her boyfriend. Depicting the struggle of many girls who find success and fame. The video got heavy rotation on MTV. It also helped propel Madonna into the spotlight making everyone aware of her while helping escalate the previous singles up the charts as well as getting heavy rotation.
The video laid the foundation for the release of her controversial “Like A Virgin” album later that year. Unleashing legion of girls in the army of “Madonna” copycats, when young girls raided their closets for lace and fingerless gloves. It started with “Borderline” and showcased Madonna’s marketing genius on how the new music video format could shape an artist’s look and brand. Something that she organically continues to do successfully.
Tyler, a little trivia here. Try to find a young John Leguzamo in this video.
He just was interviewed last week with Jimmy Fallon and admitted he wasn't paid for this!
But still thanked Madonna.
Oh, that's interesting! I'm gonna go look for that interview.
I know Fallon (like Andy Cohen) will take any opportunity to introduce Madonna into a conversation. 😉
I always loved this song, globally it was an extraordinary success!
In the beginning, the guy is jealous because a photographer comes when she is dancing and asks her to model. She is dazzled for a moment and goes to the photo shoot, and then the jealous boyfriend sees her on a ,magazine cover missing her. Then the guy at the photoshoot gets mad at Madonna for accidentally painting her car and realizes the glamour life is not for her and goes and finds her boyfriend and they make up and everyone lives happily ever after.
5:00 you guys should def hear the 12-inch extended version of Borderline!! You're gonna love it !
Early Madonna like this was heavily played on black radio stations. Warner hid her for as long as they could because of the airplay
This is why she is the Queen of Pop
the original girlboss in pop!
Thanks, Marissa! Thanks, Tyler! 🌐 I really loved this video in 1984. I remembering recording it off a show called "Night Tracks" on TBS. It was her third released song, if memory serves... but this one hit to a level others hadn't before. From then, it was just up and up and up through the early aughts in which she finally plateaued. #TylerCreatesContent #Borderline #Madonna
I've watched many other Madonna Reaction videos before I must say that I like yours better mostly because the interactions between the two of you. As a 50 year-old growing up mostly listening to Madonna's, I find comfort listening to your conversations and at the same time rediscovering what true gems in Madonna's videos are. Keep it up.
Video breakdown: Madonna is dating this one guy. A photographer discovers her and begins photo shoots w/ her. She begins getting famous (her boyfriend sees her on the cover of a magazine) and gets jealous of her time away from him. She eventually shows her boyfriend that she can still strive to fulfill her dreams and still love him just as much as she has. One doesn't take away from the other. This was the very first Madonna song I ever heard in 83!
So glad to see you react to this song, which has always been a favourite of mine. It was one of the biggest hits from her first album, which celebrates its 40th (!) anniversary later this year.
You know what I love about your friendship? It reminds me of friendships I had in my youth where we would have deep conversations about music and art. I love that you are exploring Madonna’s music and her videos. I suggest watching clips of her songs on different tours. She’s constantly updating the sound of her older songs. Great examples include Like a Prayer, La Isla Bonita and Like a Virgin across 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s
12 when this came out in '83. We had just got cable ... MTV ... Madonna was my first boyhood crush.
aww Babydonna. She was like 24/25 at the time. This was her second top ten hit i believe. 1984
@Marvin MQZ I thought Lucky Star was her first
@@nathanieljohnson5908 Lucky Star was her first Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
@Marvin MQZ I always forget that "Lucky Star" was released after "Borderline" in the US but was released before "Borderline" in the UK.
How tf was Holiday not a Top 10 single?!!! Madness…
@@CAMinYYZ It was everywhere else. UK, Germany etc. but it peaked Top 20 in her home country. Crazy. It's still sooooo famous. I'd actually say it's more famous than Borderline and even Lucky Star but maybe that's because i'm in Europe.
The boyfriend is her love the photographer is making her a star boyfriend looks at her on magazine she dont want highlife stardom she goes back to her boyfriend hes the love photo man is ambition
Her r&b side on show with this timeless classic...stunning vocals and delivery. Video reminds me of diana ross's mahogany movie
This is when I fell in love. ❤
I'm addicted to your reactions.
Y’all should react to her song rescue me it’s really good and her vocals were amazing
Love old school Madonna!
✌🏻😉✌🏻
Another classic! How is she going to choose which classics to put in a two hour show!
The song is a 10, and the video is a 10. What's the matter with you kids today?? lol
the song is a 10 in your opinion, don't expect others to like what you like, i give it a 2
@@ToniHarris-ir5vy Philistine.
@Marvin MQZ infact i give it a 1!
@@Cosmo-Kramer some of you can't take the truth. Just because i like a certain band doesn't mean i expect anybody else to like them! they do pretty honest reactions from what i see!
@@ToniHarris-ir5vy They are honest in their reactions, I will give them that. I'd certainly not rather have them lie to appease their viewers like some reactors do. But having said that, their ratings for this song/video are way too low.
In the album version you get more of the ending part...
Huge 80s Madonna 's hits and still enjoyable in 2023...❤️
So cute when you guys guess the meaning or message from the video. The concept of the video is Madonna and her boyfriend are street performers and when a photographer walks up and ask Madonna if she would like to take photos , her boyfriend gets jealous. He starts to ignore her and she starts being on magazine covers, after paint spraying a car doing a photo shoot she is fired and res turns to her boyfriend who accepts her after realizing how much he missed her
Yes Tyler......you're 💯 correct!
A lot of times, stories or images in music videos in 80s and 90s don’t necessarily match the lyrics of the songs. Those days, music video was just to promote more on MTV to sell the records. I see Borderline video have some story about Madonna herself, young girl get scouted, see how adult treats her, feel good about success, see the reality, then come back to where you belong and whom you love.
Since you are in this era, you should do a reaction to her live performance of Dress you up from the virgin tour; if you haven't already.
The theme of the video was, she as dating her boyfriend, a photographer approached her, offered her an opportunity to model, her boyfriend got jealous. She did kiss the older guy, after he gave her alcohol and then things went south. Her boyfriend was originally jealous and turned her away, but after he saw her on the magazine, ended up taking her back.
MASTERPIECE 💜
My all time favorite Madonna song
Big hit from her debut album. Check out " Burning Up".
i just looooooooooooove this song!!!!!
I really love this song
Love that song
the guy " I love the Key changes" the girl "its more like chord changes" It IS key changes sweetheart!
The sweetest song 😍
If you want a video by Madonna that will keep you mesmerized ... Papa Don't Preach.
I love that song
Looove Madonna 🥰🥰
Watch Dress You Up live to get a glimpse of the Madonna Wanna Be. She was Taylor Swift and Beyonce at the same time.
This was actually the very first music video she ever recorded in early 1984.
@IThinkTheFuckNot YouTrickAssBitch I really don’t count Everybody since it was mainly a live low budget performance on stage.
Her first video to receive attention on MTV was "Borderline", followed by "Lucky Star"
That was the photographer in the beginning of the video who gives her his card to model for him. The BF has an issue with her getting any attention, hence the song and video
Songs were short in the 1980s so they could release them on 45 rpm single records to be used in jukeboxes. It was that way from at least the 1950s.
A 45 rpm record could only hold 3 to 5 minutes of music on one side.
You two are adorable. I don’t think you were being patronizing towards her (maybe a tiny bit?), but I love the immediate self reflection on your part.
You have stolen my heart. First!😀
I remember hearing this on the radio as a kid. I thought the singer was black until the video debuted on the new MTV and I was shocked, “Oh she’s white.” But I loved the song. And still do.
❤❤❤ baby Madonna ❤❤ 40 years ago
Madonna definition of a woman who don’t care what anybody say about her still today she doing what she want. Madonna and Micheal and Prince the three Trinity two of the Trinity not with us she the only one left.
Check out Madonna’s “Cherish” fun 80’s pop song !
Great reaction guys! Please react on Madonna's video Burning Up!
You need to do Love Don't Live Here Anymore and Dark Ballet
Do “ cherish “ next or “ erotic “ from confessions tour or “ like a virgin “ from blonde ambition tour
I remember growing up, we would take our Dad's old sweatshirts and cut the arms off and make mini skirts. We all had a Madonna song we'd perform, and Borderline was mine. Hahaha
I find her early pop hits catchy and am nostalgic for them but she really came into her own as a real artist and creative visionary in the 90's. Every album throughout that decade and most of the 2000's were Madonna at her very best.
Watch Kelly Clarkson’s Because of You and you’ll see how Madonna was made. Also watch Papa Don’t Preach.
Madonna was on jimmy fallon a few years back ( also on the show was president Obama) and she sang a really cool version of BORDERLINE!!!!
You should Totally Ck that out!!!!!!!💙💙💙👍
They said it was a night with a president and a queen 👍😀
U are both so awesome!!( m doesn’t look really happy here tho, not my biz, hope she’s ok)
Love X two!
Holla lol

(Sorry for my errors , but I’m typing and running at the same time 😱💙👍👊😀
Oh, I think I was just trying to figure out the video --- and I know my "concentrating face" makes me look bored/unhappy 🤣! But I appreciate the concern!
she’s good, don’t worry! :) i might check out that jimmy fallon version at some point myself!
I love you guys. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that publicly about M haha .. she’s FAB I just thought she looked different . 😘M
Also, think you do these vids just for me and no one else!!!!
…..and I think u can see me too
👍🙄😂😂hahaha
Weird right?! again tho.,, I listen to you guys while im running everyday!!! so I get a tab bit (😱) hyper xxoo
Feel you. Why did they fade out the la's so fast?! Best part!
❤❤❤❤
One of her best. This song was from her very first album. It was where it all started. She was a baby. Now she is the GOAT we all know. Long live the Queen!!
I think her boyfriend was jealous of her having a cover girl career. That guy was a photographer taking photos for shoots. It’s quite obvious. 😁
Noooooooo! At the beginning the other guy offer her to take photos of her to be a model or whatever, and her boyfriend gets jelous. The other guy takes pictures of her but he wants more but she not, and then she leaves the man and return with her boyfriend. Just means: dont push me with your jelousy because you can trust in me!
The video is simple because is her first record. Holiday is still much more simple! she started working hard, everything done by herself and she was evolving and growing and getting bigger and bigger....you see the difference with others singers who appear after like Britney or Gaga that already they came out with everything planned, the product made it, and bigger budgets because they were the product of the industry, always looking for the new Madonna...
Please react to Madonna the Enlightenment. It just came out, it is from her new photo shoot with Vanity Fair! Are you guys getting tickets to Madonna's Greatest Hits Tour> You will be blown away by seeing her in person.
dress you up next! more 80s realness
I was 14!!! 1983
I was 3 🙂
The “La’s” are slightly longer on the album version.
she was the queen of cool... like for real tho nobody else was like her
Uhmm.. Cyndi. How can you forget? They were basically tied at this point with both of their debut albums released about the same time with Cyndi taking the lead with being the first artist to have 4 top 10 singles from one album. This record has been broken many times but she was the first. Let's give her that.
Of course when Like A Virgin dropped and Madonna mania exploded, she would forever be the Queen of Pop.
@@carlheese I didn't forget Cyndi... She's So Unusual is a great album. But Madonna had a confidence like nobody else. She was the coolest person on earth. Thats why there were so many wannabes and generations that followed have continued to be affected by her impact still rippling outward to this day.
@Marvin MQZ nope. Cyndi was great but Madonna was way cooler. The dance moves and confidence. Cyndi was more like wacky and fun... and a weird dancer. Madonna on the other hand was the one we wanted to be like.
there's no use comparing Madonna and Cyndi.Cyndi is cool but her run wasn't even near Madonna's. Plus the impact Madonna had on the MTV generation through her confidence presented in videos that were truly works of art in the 80s... well it's not really something Cyndi was ever able to achieve in her presentations.
Here is a take. How fame changes and test relationships and love
its the different guy what i enjoy is it seems like her getting famous. she has this low rent boyfriend and he can feel her slipping away as she starts her career aka the photographer represents hollywood
Have you seen her song "Bitch I'm Madonna:?
Watch the video and you will get it.. 🙃
