One of the best channels to learn about Nikon and photography in general. Can’t believe has less than 6K subscribers.
    Some great D lenses imo:
    - Nikkor 28mm 1.4D
    - Nikkor 35mm 2.0D
    - Nikkor 60mm 2.8D Micro
    - Nikkor 105mm 2.0D DC
    - Nikkor 180mm 2.8D ED IF
    Some great AI-S/AI-P lenses:
    - Nikkor 28mm 2.8 AI-S
    - Nikkor 50mm 1.2 AI-S
    - Nikkor 180mm 2.8 ED AI-S
    - Nikkor 300mm 2.8 ED IF AI-S new
Though Zeiss has amazing ZF.2 lenses, Voigtlander also has a few good ones.

I wish that Nikon would produce an FTZ Mark III that will allow autofocusing of AF-D lenses. I have the 105 DC but unfortunately it cannot autofocus on a mirrorless camera. I don't mind manual focusing but the manual focus ring of the 105 DC is not as smooth as the manual focusing of my Nikon Ai-S and Voigtlander 40mm f/2 SL IIs lenses. I actually enjoyed manual focusing on a Z6 using the Voigtlander 40mm f/2 SL IIs.

I briefly had that 16mm semi-fisheye on my D750 and found it to be a lot of fun. The photos I did with it were so sharp, critically sharp, cruelly sharp, I could do huge blow ups from small parts of the frame without any loss of sharpness. It was probably the sharpest lens I have used, and I have a lot of Nikon lenses. Maybe I just got a fluke variation, or maybe you got a dud, but it definitely was NOT soft in any way. Love these AF-D lenses, and am pleased to see you explaining about them. Keep up the great work!

Great video. I've recently been using the 50mm 1.8D on the Nikon Z6ii, which produces amazing images with the help of the camera's brilliant Focus Peaking.

I absolutely love the D series line of Nikkor primes! I use them on my DSLR (for AF) or on mirrorless. I like the character and build quality. Check the 28mm f1.4 D Amazing!

I'm only a new-ish subscriber to this channel, so have been viewing your back-catalogue of your videos and live streams. I learnt something today! I had no idea that I could change the setting of aperture control on my D500 when I have my 50mm f1.4 D lens attached, in the menus. I just wanted to thank you both for informing us (me) about this!

@Mandie Shumway sorry Mandie but I couldn’t afford the 1.4 G, I’m happy with the performance of the D though. Thanks for the info anyway.

Enjoyed your livestream video on the AF-D prime lenses, sorry I missed when it was live. Since Nikon will no longer be making AF-D and AIS primes, will new and vintage/used go up in prices? Because that would just suck. By the way (I don't use text speak), would getting the 28mm and 50mm 1.8 prime lenses be better than AF-Ds? I'm looking to get one or both, used by the way. Thanks.

Late from Texas. I've purchased 3 lenses in as many weeks, 2 are AF-D, 1 is AI-S. "Bodies come and go. Glass is forever." Of the 14 lenses I own, only 3 of them are Gs (or their 3rd market vender equivalents) or newer. My two AF-D DCs just became a bit sweeter. As for "era of soft focus", just ask any working models today just how sharp she wants her photos to be. Eyelashes, sharp, skin over her cheekbones, not sharp. She'll love you for it and work harder at it.

It’s interesting your saying about the D series lenses on large sensor cameras
I have a manual focus 35mm made in 1963 modified to fit modern cameras, on my D850 it has a umm creamy silkyness that a modern 35 doesn’t I love it to be honest but I haven’t tried to use it at high ISO

Looks like demand and prices will rise big time. D lenses are on many Videogrophers want list and imho the newer s and g lenses, albeit sharper and quicker are too big and often too heavy for incinspcuios street / travel photography. Did I mention they are expensive? Looking now for a mint 20mm 2.8D.

I have a few Nikon DSLRS (D70s, D80, D600, and D850) and naturally have bought the G series but I just recently became interested in the D series lenses because I bought a Nikon F4s film camera. As you probably know the F4 will not auto focus the G series lenses but will auto focus the D series. The F100 will auto focus G series lenses.

I like the fact that you mention a lot of those prime "D" lenses.. they're pretty affordable in America.. "G" modern ones are just way out of my league in price range... You guys are the best trust me it's best when you announce information with both of you.. amazing work!

The D lens is also part of the 3D matrix metering system ,they came out in 1992 together with the f90 which was the first camera with a 3D matrix metering system.Today all current Nikon lenses are D lenses because they contain an encoder which transfers the distance information to the 3D matrix metering system.

I am a portrait photographer so sharpness is not at the top of my list and it has created problems with too sharp images. The 135 dc has replaced the 70-200 in my bag because with 46 mp I can now easily crop the 135 to 50% making it a 270. Same reason with high iso modern cameras, I can crank iso for low light and don't need to lug a heavy 1.4 lens when a lighter 2.0 or 2.8 works fine. The new 105 is the only lens with bokeh that LITERALLY made me nauseous with the disturbing bokeh. Meanwhile the old 106 and 135 are bokeh champs and are plenty sharp for portraiture. For 35 and 85, I use zeiss distagon and planar respectively. Manual focus but between infinity to 5 feet is the tiniest of movement. With the 85, if not running and gunning, setting it at 10', I am usually only 4' off either way. For run and gun tthe 85 1.8 D where quick response trumps image quality. For me, the 35 is for environmental or group so I am back a good distance and am closed down to get the bg in focus so could even zone focus and have essentially a point and shoot.

Are you actually telling me that if you shot with the AFD at say f4 and then the same image with a current lens and printed both without cropping and viewed both at say twice the diagonal you would be able to pick which was which? You must be kidding! Lenses of the 80s were already good enough for pros the rest is hype for sales.

@@duncanthorn6338 Triskelion-like symbols go back at least to Mycenaean culture, going through Viking culture and so on. The Razer logo is a triskelion with snakes, whereas the Isle of Man's flag has a triskelion with armor legs (this triskelion dates back to the 14th century, but the flag was created in the mid-30's). Neither is really original.
