A fine gentleman and soldier who gave a part of himself in defense of his country. I thank him for his sacrifice .
Finally someone who tells it like it is, he made this sacrifice to defend his country. All the videos in which US veterans tell their stories, I always read comments like "Thank you for your service and for defending our freedom." The Americans defended absolutely nothing. German WW2 veterans who fought against British soldiers had a lot of respect for the British soldiers and their courage and bravery.Best regards from Germany
How was he defending the US when he was bombing another continent? Germany never attacked the US. I'm not taking anything away from this man's loss and bravery but come on, let's talk historical truth here.
Such life in this 99 year old gentleman!
He paid the price so others could walk freely. Thank you sir.
Top bloke! My great uncle was a Sherman gunner in the Irish Guards. His tank was knocked out but he managed to survive. Lived until 2007. Incredible what that generation had to put up with. Thank you for your service Mr. Hayward.
Mr Hayward my Grandfather served in the marine corps in the pacific I’m so grateful for men like you that where brave enough to suffer for your freedom you will never be forgotten
My God - What the people in WW2 had to endure.
Thank you Mr Hayward. An absolute hero & a humble tough gentleman. Probably the greatest generation......What a lovely man.
What a delightful man! His optimism and positive outlook on his irrevocably changed life are an inspiration. "Whatever life does to you, don't give way to despair."
The best of British understatement. Wot, Wot!!! This generation was possibly the greatest in history. Bless him and them all. Lest we forget.
Ty Rishi for helping to save these historical memories.
Three thoughts. 1) Any time you feel that the world is coming down on you and you want to bitch, cuss or complain, watch the class that this man exhibits. 2) a thousand hugs to Mr. Hayward for courage, perserverance, and atritude and 3) Thanks for creating this interview.
May God give us wisdom to avoid wars at all cost!
They are referred to as the greatest generation on earth for a reason.
so humble , this is a real gentleman !!!
Mr. Hayward, you are such an inspiration and hero. God Bless you Sir, and thank you so much for all you gave for freedom. From across the pond 🙏
Thank you, Mr Hayward, for your service, your dedication, honor, bravery and sacrifice.
🎖️🏆❤️🩹🙏💪🛐❤️
I love him! I love how once he got over his depression. He just got on with life. That’s how I was when I became disabled at the age of 19 as well. Just adapted like he did. Life is what you make it. I love listening to him talk. Such a kind thoughtful gentleman. 😊😊😊
He crawled away from the exploded burning tank only by his arms.
He lay severely wounded that way for *half* of an *hour* .
What an inspiration! 🙌🏻 This man is a living, breathing embodiment of the British “stiff upper lip” 👌🏻
My dad was a Fighter/Bomber pilot in the South Pacific. God bless you sir.
I am thankful you survived and were willing to share your story, Mr. Hayward. You are a marvelous human being, and my family and I hope you will enjoy many more years of life and happiness. ❤️
How many men can say they survived a tiger attack? This dude is a fucking beast.
Thank you sir what a great amount you gave for freedom God bless you sir my hero you such a wonderful man
My grandfather and his three brothers who are all world war two veterans and non of them talked about their experiences at least very little my grandfather fought the Japanese and my uncle jerry fought the germans in battle of the bulge the other was in the navy in the Pacific may there souls be at peace i miss them dearly
This is a real man" God Bless
God Bless you Sir and Thank you for your service and sacrifices. We honor your generation of being the Greatest Generation of the century. ❤😊🙏
Sir, without your sacrifice and of countless other Allied soldiers, we would all be speaking German now and being forced to say Heil Hitler to authorities. You kept us free! Thank you.
Mr. Hayward is more spry and capable than many 20 year olds. What a gentleman and a warrior. Thank you for your service and for shaping the world as we know it today.
What a lovely person.
I am a American and thank You for Your service and self sacrifice.
What a brilliant hero never let anything get him down even after loosing his legs big respect
God Bless Mr Hayward for his amazing storytelling and his own personal sacrifice during the war.
The world is a better place for him being in it.
I myself am a veteran, but never saw combat. This is one of the best interviews with a WW2 veteran I have ever seen. My only question is did any other members of that tank crew survive?
What an amazing gentleman. He saved the world ❤ Thank you so much for this interview!
My word... what an absolute gentleman, what a human being, what a generation.
Thank you Mr Hayward.
What a paragon of positivity. To be so badly injured at such a young age. Yet to have only positive thoughts. A fine example of a much better generation. The likes of which we will never see again.
As a Prestonian. I am pleased & proud that your time in Preston left you with good memories.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
The last generation to have a backbone.
What a complete hero. What an attitude - amazing man.
A tank was a fearsome place to be during a "Brew up" thank god he didn't "pack it all in" . I knew lots of ww2 vetrans very few would say much about it.
What a remarkable man , he proves a sense of humour is a must . 🤠👍
God Bless Sir ❤
Mr. Hayward this is such a gift of a story for us all and luckily it is right before Memorial Day here in the States. As a teenager I was lucky enough to volunteer at some of the veteran clubs here and got to spend some fun cheeky times with WWII gentlemen and their wives - I was even thanked for giving the other ladies a break from the dancing and games their husbands played. And jokes went over my head at the time. Now older - it means a great deal to have a better understanding of what I am grateful for. I do hope this time with Mr. Sharma and crew and sharing this story has done some good for yourself and to know the good you continue to do is much appreciated and deserves thanks. You are a great example and voice of our heroes. I wish you all the best and will certainly do what I can for Blesma's ongoing work.
Besides his selfless service and heroism, its interesting how positive, kind and resilient he remains. Contrast him with some of the human mediocrity that surrounds us today. Mr Haywood, simply stated, is what made Britain great.
what makes Britain great. This legend and his peers are still among us! Thanks and GOD BLESS THE WWII Veterans
Wonderful man, may God bless him always.
Thank you for not giving up.
I am grateful for your service sir. My dad was in Germany from 43-45 in the Army. I am forever grateful for your sacrifice.
UNBELIEVABLY BRAVE, MR HAYWARD! ❤❤❤
My grandfather made artificial legs during the war , well he made them from the 30s - 50s, but obviously there was a lot needed during WW2. My dad took me to see my uncle after school one day, he was a prosthetic fitter, and all these legs were lined up either side of the hospital hall, this was the 60s, they scared the daylights out of me, i was about 6 so they were bigger than me. I had a childhood phobia about them after that. Now obviously, im glad these great gentlemen were given mobility back. Thank you for sharing this wonderful gentleman's story.
I really enjoyed this interview. What a story he has. Such amazing parents he had. 😊😊😊
Thank you for your service.
Thank you for your service God bless you I am the son of a royal engineer and Gaurds man. My Grandad served on HMS Victorious air craft carrier I am name after him so each day try to be the best person I can and always put others first. Thank you I wish you well you are an inspiration.
What a remarkable man...truly.
He's so lovely! I really enjoyed hearing about his experience. He seems like a great man! God bless him!
God bless you Sir, and I give you the most respect for trying to help the Veterans my grandfather served during your time. I know that my family members who severed never talked about it and I know why now, but I kinda of already knew to never ask. I'm glad to see you and hear you laugh just a bit. Bless you and glad to hear the others were there for you then. Your a real man compared to the ones who come back and complain about anything to receive a check don't want to even try to work. Thank you and I give you so much respect and love.
I could listen to this lovely gentleman all day long. Thank you so much for sharing your story sir.
What a fine honor to document and witness this tank radio operators brutal story of perseverance in 2024. May the world will never forget the realities Mr. Hayward, and the entries of others such as yours through the ages! Thank you team for helping to voice this.
An absolutely amazing story of SURVIVAL.
top human being without a doubt
Mr Hayward - thank you and your pals for your hard work and sacrifice so that we future generations can have a future. No greater sacrifice a man can make than to give his future so that others can have theirs. Thank you so much Mr Hayward, God Bless you
I'm left speechless. What an attitude ! when was this recorded ? To Mr. Hayward, Sir, you are such a lighthouse and powerhouse at the same time. I will remember your words in moments when doubting. Thanks for dealing so well with life and the cruelty of war hitting you so hard. I'm of German descent and feel deeply saddened again and again, grieving with you the loss of your comardes. I felt responsible since being young to work towards us humans to use our intelligence properly and come to our senses and be naturally compassionate. When young, I was fortunate enough to attend United World College of the Atlantic, founded in 1962 on the Welsh coast, to foster international understanding. I wish we would have learned more by now, but we cannot give up on it. A heartfelt thank you again for being a light to yourself and others !
What a shame that our countries ended up fighting each other twice, those damn fools in 1914 couldn't sit around a table and resolve the problems, which led to the later war also.
Greetings to you in germany, I know the area around St Donats well, its a lovely part of Wales, I hope you enjoyed your time there.
Best wishes from Britain.
What a fantastic attitude after such a horrible war injury. Makes you appreciate the simple things in life....
Thank you sir for your service and sacrifice
What an incredible man. His bravery and humility are so moving. To have lived his life as a double amputee and remained so cheerful and positive. An example to us all of how to deal with real difficulty. So articulate and interesting to listen to. A real hero, even though I just know he wouldn't want to be thought of as such. Total respect.
What a hero!! I feel that's all I need to say. Other then thank you sir for service!

I served with the Royal Tank Regiment and in Northern Ireland, and I often wondered how I would behave if wounded. Fortunately I wasn’t, but I like to think that I could have acted with the grace and spirit of this fine gentleman. Thank you for your sacrifices, and thank you Rishi for bringing us such an inspiring story.

A total respect for your service and sacrifice Sir thanks a lot. You say at a point about the "maggots" who save you, it litteraly happened the same to one of my grand father who was involved by force in german army sent to the russian front he lost a leg was care as the minimalist point at the time and when he was on the train back on france (few day) maggots came on is injury and he say those maggots save him from gangrene because they "eat" the dead flesh. And he survived many year after the war because of that
