Next time you're recording in a public building, and someone asks "is there a reason for the camera?", I'd like to see a more detailed response though so they can be more educated. For example: "Why yes there is, I'm so glad you asked! You see, this is a public building, and I'm standing in a public lobby. You're a public official, and I'm a tax paying citizen and a journalist. The first amendment grants me, and anyone else for that matter, the right to record public officials in the course of their duties and anything else we may happen to hear and see from within a public space. Part of my job is to ensure that our public officials (such as yourself) are acting in accordance with the law, the policies of the office they represent, and most importantly, the constitution by which they swore an oath to support. This camera ensures that neither your, nor my testimony (or anyone else's for that matter) can taint any records of what transpires here today. As an advocate to the constitution, it would be hypocritical of me NOT to record our interaction and the same could be said for you, as a sworn-in public official, to request that I turn my camera off, or intentionally block or obstruct my ability to record - thus impeding upon my First Amendment rights and subsequently, violating your oath to support these rights.
LOL. Yeah right. Why not just hand them the Constitution? Or recite Shakespeare? The above statement (edit: essay*) is ridiculous. Save it for the lawsuit.
Here is a question for the public records folks. Why do the charge for copies when all of the paper and printing materials have already been paid for by the taxpayer? Isn't that kinda like you are paying for your own materials?
Gearshifter G that never occurred to me. In one city I got records from I was charged for time. I needed three officers' body cam footage. They charged for the time they invested.. I would like to look into that. The man who did it in Cookville, TN broke it down and wanted preapproval that I would pay for how much he estimated the cost. I agreed but he explained how much time it would take him. Since that is his job why should I pay for the time when he's paid per hour anyway?
