37 years of working on cat equipment and I have never seen the chop saw starting a pony. What a great idea. Your the man!!
😂😂 laziness is the mother of invention
@@DieselCreek I mentioned chain saw on the last video, but the chop saw was a gooder idea.
My ding bat garden tractor pulling buddies are proud of you !!!
@@DieselCreek you say “laziness”, I say “conservation of time”….if you HAVE the tools at hand to get it done without wearing yourself out, why not use them?
🇺🇲 Improvising!! 👍
Where I work, we recertify compressed gas cylinders. Such as what refrigerant comes in, only much bigger sizes like 1000 pound capacity cylinders. If they’re rusty inside we use an 18% hydrochloric acid. Works super well
I have never seen anyone with more enthusiasm to see old iron run again. Good job Matt.
How cool is that !?!?
OHH THIS MF
Man if i had my own land and money i would be trying do the same thing i LOVE old stuff idk if its the look of it all or what but i dont like new stuff lol
you've never seen Taryl Dactyl.
Cant get enough of this from him
WHEN YOU BROKE OUT THE CONCRETE SAW WITH THE BELT.
I AM DEAD.... Absolutely genius hahaha!
I was sitting here with my grandson and he turned to me and said “gee Pop that man sure is happy” when the main engine started. It’s a great feeling when my 12 year old grandson is with me watching you instead of being on some street corner up to no good and sharing your joy. Well done again Matt

The enjoyment on that man's façè says everything 😅
Using a 2 stroke saw to start a 4 stroke pony motor to start a diesel engine is on of the funniest things I've seen on this channel and I love it!
This guy is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Respect to the master. Excellent and very interesting videos 👍👍👍
As a Chevron Lube Oil Technical Rep of 28 years, I can't tell you how much I enjoy your videos Matt. Keep up the great work !
Thank for sharing
I can't believe how resilient good diesel engines can actually be....
It's absolutely insane
An hour and 15 minutes what a good day it’s going to be. Hope your well mate
A fellow aussie im guessing??
Just Curious why did you buy another one don't you have another one exactly the same that you completely repainted?
@@cammos yess indeed
@@bobbythompson6017 why did you comment on my comment?
Yeah mad me too im from melbourne.
Your use of the gas powered chop saw to belt start the pony motor is genius. It proves the old saying that "Necessity is the Mother of Invention".
Pony to start the pony!
Took a few pulls to start that chop saw. Maybe he needs to find a pony motor for that too😂
I think this video demonstrates that it's actually "Laziness is the Mother of Invention."
@@dfross87 that pony looked like it has a bit of compression! I'd definitely be looking for an easier way to turn it over! Plus, the plug wires were mixed up. How many pulls would it have to realize that?!
@@dans_Learning_Curve probably less had I been doing it by hand! 😂
Laughing out LOUD. It is so much fun to watch you get this rusty iron running. You are the best
Thanks for continuing to save old stuff that in today’s mentality would go by the wayside. It’s a pleasure to see your enthusiasm and outstanding work. Keep doing what you do 👍👌
What a revival! You looked like a mad scientist running around your experiments there. That was truly satisfying to watch
IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE! I'VE DONE IT IGOR IT'S ALIVE, MUAHAHAHAHA!
Just love the boyish enthusiasm, the excitement as an old engine stutters to life, pure magic. Well done Matt.
I have the same engine in a D2 dozer. Good to see the old mills still running!
It's still a stuttering 3 cylinder
@@bhaebe6671 no it’s definitely running on all 4
@@DieselCreek running well on all 4 !!
Nice work !!
@@bhaebe6671 I thought it sounded a little rough as well, he's probably getting heat on all cylinders, but.
Hopefully the sound gets better
Growing up in a small suburb in the 60's, the road we lived on was a dirt road. The county came out and widened the roads and laid blacktop. They used a Cat grader that looked about like yours. I was so excited being about 5 years old watching these graders, trucks, loaders and all the construction equipment. Sounds real good for being neglected so long.

I like the way this guy throws out the rule book when it comes engine servicing. There's indeed no need to have lots of scuples to get the job done and without breaking the wallet. Very good job!
Best thing about these videos is that its not my knuckles getting skinned and my finger nails getting crushed! This kind of work is fascinating when it doesnt involve personal pain and frustration. Keep up the good work Matt, best wishes from an old engineer in Oxfordshire UK.
Yip! 👍😅

Armed through creativity and stupidity!! 🤣🤣 Definitely a quote i will be using in the future!! Good job Matt!
I cannot say it enough, These videos are just so wholesome and fun to watch. Matt is the only CZcamsr to create content having me eagerly awaiting the next video release. The enthusiasm, the genuine respect for the craft, and the walk through as he works is just awesome!
Me too
Matt is an amazing guy.
Most people want new stuff. Rarely do I come across someone appreciating and having fun running stuff twice their age or more. Matt sure qualifies
Exactly! Me too.
He's up there with Mustie1
Hi Matt... I have never commented on your videos but in this case I am. I watched the whole process of you getting you shop built as well as the container shop. I always felt for you when the weather was crap and you were still following you passion. I for one think it is absolutely GREAT to see you in your new shop and doing the stuff that I really enjoy watching you do. You keep doing what you appear to love and I will watch every video you produce.
Matt. Jim Hyde here and I have to hand it to you, you truly put on an energetic presentation that is quite informative as well. LOVE the 2 cycle starting the pony. Good on ya and keep it going. Jim
Great job Matt, I understand now why the $102 seal is worth it, So appreciated that you have the patience to follow through and do it right.
Matt, you are the Diesel Whisperer! I love watching you bring old machines back to life! Kudos, sir!
🎉🎉🎉🎉well done.
I love watching you work on these old monsters and getting them up and running again. Your great mechanic Matt
Matt, I enjoyed your grader enthusiasm!! I'm a retired acft mechanic and retired farm girl, was just as excited when you got both of them going!! Bet you are overly excited that you have a decent shop to work in!! Keep up the excellent videos and work, from Ne.
Matt, your enthusiasm when the pony motor fired off and the diesel fired was worth the wait. You're "Liie a kid" side is awesome to see.
Awesome! Man the Grader Engine sounds a lot better than I thought it would. Good job getting the two Engines running Matt and hell yeah on your "Chop Saw Pony Motor Starting Device" LOL . It worked well and saved your shoulder. Looking forward to all future videos , thanks for taking us along Matt and of course thumbs UP! 👍💯 Have an awesome day everyone!

Morning Matt, you definitely are creative!
Also, you have changed my outlook on old iron running again!! The way that cylinder was rusted, just amazes me!! Y'all be safe!! God Bless!!
Its a beautiful thing to see a man appreciate older equipment, repair things the correct way & bring them back to life. Things just arent built the way they used to. Love to see it!
I was very tempted to fast forward to where you got the engine unstuck, but you took the time and effort to share with us the motions you went through, so it's only fitting that we also go through it. I love these videos, keep them coming.
I did fast forward….but knew I was cheating myself out of something amazing 🫢
Love seeing Matts reaction when he gets things fired up. You feel like you are in there with him. Brilliant 👏
loved the point when you could hear that cylinder start to come back to and start firing. Thats what its all about right there
Using a small engine to start a larger engine, which is then used to start an even larger engine, is particularly entertaining for me. It reminds me of the scene in King of the Hill when Hank takes out a can of WD40 to spray a sticky door knob, but the lid is stuck on, so he takes out a smaller can of WD40 to spray the lid of the larger can of WD40, and then uses the larger can of WD40 on the door knob. Great stuff.
A good tip when lapping valves into their seats is to put a light spring between the valve head and the guide. This means you can stop ever few turns, let the spring lift the valve off the seat and dribble a little bit of kerosene around the valve, this carries the grinding compound back into the lapping zone. A proper valve grinding power tool, like Black and Decker used to make, is not rotary but oscillating .
Congrats Matt! Epic episode. I think 99% of us would have "noped" out when we saw the pull cord on that pony motor. (Not to mention the water in the cylinder.) You are an inspiration!
I just see it as a challenge!
Nice looking project and how satisfying to see both engines start up so easily! This rig is going to be awesome when it’s completed and cruises to a show with the Autocar and lowboy trailer. I really dig old iron commercial vehicles. They are an important piece of our country’s history. Nice work Matt!
The joy in that face!! To see you this happy made even my problems dissappear for a while. Moore good on you for keeping these videos coming.
When the Pony Engine fired up, I let out a cheer. Well done. I am impressed with your tenacity, ingenuity and knowledge. From your 83 year old Canadian admirer.
Absolutely no better way to spend my Saturday afternoon than sat here watching Matt play with machinery.
Loved watching the dog. It doesnt move but watches every step Matt makes. Awsome
WOOOWWWW. Incredible. I got chills when that sucker fired up. Great video, Matt. Impressive dedication to a tedious and difficult job.
Congratulations on getting it running again. Your ability to resurrect these old machines is pretty remarkable.
Thanks drew!!
I know it’s going to be a great day when I get to start off with a new video from Diesel Creek! Thank you for the work you put into these videos Matt.
That trick to rig a starter for the pony engine reminds me what Essential Craftsman does to start his old D4(?) Cat pony. But he uses a corded electric motor with a slightly shorter belt.
Hearing that old diesel start up and run was awesome. To me, there is nothing like hearing old, old engines start up for the first time in many years.
That is the first time I have ever seen a pony motor with its own pony motor, absolutely brilliant Matt ,that is some creative thinking there
Been watching since the old Autocar “will it start” and building the container workshop. Subscriber numbers are pulling away from Watch Wes Work and Dirt Perfect (both quality channels), challenging Letsdig18, and chasing down Andrew Camarata. You continue to put great quality and variety on your channel. Keep up the good work and we’ll keep watching.

@@DieselCreek nothing but well wishes for you! Are you curious about the car in my profile picture? 😉
Your comment “makes no sense “
It never ceases to amaze me how you, and a couple others I follow, can get these old machines that have sat for countless years to fire up and often simply drive away. It says something for when things were meant to last instead of being thrown away.
yes, most people wouldn't give this old girl the time of day lol
Great Video Matt. Again. Chop Saw was classic Matt.
You might consider a bolt or something in the forklift fork in case the chain wants to slip off the end. I had that happen once. It sucked. I built a metal box that slips over the end of the fork, drop a 1/2" pin through to keep it in place then welded a 2" ball on for moving trailers around, but also works great for wrapping chains over when using it as a crane/hoist. Just a thought.
Just hit me how little motor graders have changed since 1942. Hydralics and ac/bit of comfort and that thing could be from the 90s. An 81 year old excavator one would barely recognice as a excavator. As always... awesome work and awesome vid Matt!
You are quite a miracle worker. I didn't think you even had a chance of getting that engine running, much less running good, but you really seem to have the knack for fixing the impossible, and why I have gone back and watched every single one of your videos. I no longer watch TV. CZcams or movies provided by Amazon Prime provide my entertainment. Thanks for keeping me interested.
Thanks for watching!!!
Fantastic Matt! Love your gumption for getting old things running most people would have thrown away working again! So much knowledge and super humble!
Matt I was told you have to have the big engine spinning for circulation. And you now have a extra engine for Mary Anne the shovel digger.😊
A concrete saw starting a pony motor! Matt, you are something else. I never get tired of your videos, outstanding work!
A pony motor for the pony motor
The Joy joy of you on initial start up Matt 🥰 thanks mate 👌👏👏👏👏🍺
so technically, wouldn’t that be called a foal motor 😂
Very impressive that you got both motors running so well after such a long inoperative time. It's amazing how little smoke there is from the big diesel engine.
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ stfu...
Yeah that was a little odd.
@@rickvaiBBB Just a bit, we're over here talking about old iron and some jag-off is beating on about the bible....cool dude literally no one asked.
Between you and MUSTIE 1, I don't know who gets more excited when you both get an antique running again.
Matt you blow me away with your never quit make it work plan. Its amazing
It's gonna be a great day when there's a new Diesel Creek restoration video. Both engines sounded a lot better than what I expected. Nice work.
That chop-saw pony starter was the best thing I've seen in a long while.
Great job Matt. I’m impressed at how “easy” it is to get these old, neglected engines running. By easy I mean when a talented wrench who just won’t quit puts his mind to it. Thanks for the video. Ed
Your right about these old diesels starting right up after sitting for so long. Makes me wonder why we haven't had more cars with diesel engines think about a old car sitting that long and starting up on fuel that has been in the tank for 20 years. Not going to happen with a gas engine
@@jeffdean1077 There are a ton of diesel autos around the world that arent able to be imported. Mexicans are always on look out to buy them and take to mexico. My first car was 1984 Nissan Maxima Diesel. Damn good car.
I absolutely love to see old stuff come back to life!!!
That's why I restored antique clocks for almost 20 years.
Once you drive that thing through the paint sprayer it'll look a lot nicer! 😄😁😃😉🙄😆
I can’t believe that’s all the smoke that came out of thing after 49 plus years not running - EXCELLENT JOB
Good to see you Matt and as always you can fix anything with a little time my friend! I’m loving your new workshop brother, so much nicer than watching you suffer in the grease and mud like you used to do! I’m so glad that your dream shop came true!

Episodes like this are why I watch your channel. I get just as excited as you do damn near. You really are great at explaining what you’re doing while you do it and your enthusiasm is contagious. You were real inspiration Buddy. Great freaking work.
Thank you !!!
Hey Matt, Tater up here in northeast PA. I enjoy your videos. Been watching them for the last 2 years or so and my almost 3 year old daughter joins me and loves them. Been hitting the thumbs up on every one. Believe me when I tell you I have learned more about old diesel engines and other things you’ve done on here just by watching your videos than anywhere else. Keep it up and can’t wait for your next video.
Give your Dad a big hug Matt! That man deserves it for producing such a fine young man!
57:23 I F-ING LOVE THIS START UP!!
I like what you do for old equipment Matt!!!you bring it back from the dead and I really like that!!!
Well Done. Getting a stuck engine freed up has always been almost as satisfying as getting one started. Kindred spirit. Thanks.
The best part is Matt's reaction to a successful start.
You make all that hard work look easy Matt. Everytime you dive into one of these earthmover projects, I am reminded of how important the periodic maintenance of the equipment is, as I was taught in my dozer operation course back in '82. Another great video. I very much appreciate it. I believe that you should make this grader all that it can be, not neccesrily a complete rebuild, but all the important functional stuff. Just my two cents.
As an old geezer I have worked outside as we have seen Matt do. I remember what a Godsend it was to later on work in a shed and eventually a garage out of the weather and with tools and equipment close by and available. It has been a pleasure to watch the same things happen at DieselCreek. Bless you for bringing back those old memories for me.
Yeah man, pressure pump replacement on V8 truck diesel at winter forest, at -13 °F is not a thing i wish to repeat :)

Great work. Love your channel 👍🏻
Loved seeing the shop build, but great to see you doing what most wont bother with again! Lets see this thing working again!!
Using the saw to start the pony engine was a stroke of genius! How many times do you think you would have had to yank that rope if you hadn't come up with that one? I mean, especially since the plug wires were crossed and you didn't know it. It was a real MacGyver moment. That's the reason guys like me watch your show religiously!
These are the videos I encourage my students to watch on CZcams! Great explanation on everything you do! And another great job Matt!
Also potential accidents to avoid! 🥺
Squatch253 is another excellent channel to check out.
He restored a Cat D4 total disassembly, repair and replace as needed and rebuilt 100 percent.
Pacific Northwest Hillbilly also did his in his shop barn his wife has the upstairs loft for her antique restoration shop.
It was amazing watching both of them building tools as needed and sourcing parts.
It's unbelievable how many parts Cat has available for those 70 plus year old engines.
Thanks for another long video Matt and I’m delighted that you got both engines up and running, you have a great channel here and long may your viewer numbers increase 👍🏻🏴
By the way, I’m someone who tore a shoulder trying to start stubborn equipment over the years. Obviously putting off carb rebuilds, etc.
Your cutoff saw starter is brilliant!
hello matt love seeing u bring back old engines back to working order
Excellent job Matt, personally i'd never thought that i'd watch a video about old machinery getting repaired without skipping a second and also you make it look so simple. Can't wait to see it driving 👏
I may get tired of seeing old machines resurrected but I will never tire of seeing Matts face when they start up!!! Keep em coming
Heading into 2 weeks without a video. I hope Matt didn't get hurt.
Great job on that rusted old grader Mat. Sometimes it takes a little longer to reach our goals but when we do those are the best ones that will stay graded in our minds the longest😊. Keep up the great work and thank you for the great show. Will see you on the next one.
I was so impressed with your stuck flywheel diagnosis as well as your chop saw starter idea. I would never have thought of either. Great fun to watch your videos. Thanks Matt!
Matt, you make it seem so simple working alone and making magic happen. The chop saw starter is simply genius. I check every morning for new videos, if I can watch a new one, I watch an old one for the 10th time. Keep it up.
Really nice work! I did not expect you would have that kind of success an 80 year old industrial machine. Excellent video with very rewarding results. 👍🏻 I loved the “portable power starter” too. Work smarter not harder!
I love how thru the whole speed run at 51:00 to 56:00 that big ol lazy doggo didn't move not one time just napped the whole time😂😂
I am really surprised that the pony motor started that easy, not to mention that it ran great, and the was ingenious to use that saw as a starting tool, and then to have the diesel engine to start up and actually run good, so happy things worked out for you Matt, looks like it might turn out being a great functional grader to your collection 👍👍👍🍮🍮🍮😃😃😃
It just goes to show that just because it’s OLD, it doesn’t mean it can RUN. I miss hauling construction equipment/oversized stuff here&there(I’m mostly tanker these days), and watching you resurrect these old beasts keeps me in touch. It’s not lost on me at the end, with the old Autocar cab being brought in with your skid steer…..glad you’ve not given up on that truck, even with the more/capable orange Autocar in use…
Couldn't keep the smile off my face when you got the old girl running.
Matt, I felt your sense of accomplishment with both the pony motor and main motor starts. Great idea to create a belt starter for the pony. I just wonder if the pony would start with a rope now, without having to bust out the industrial starter.
Thanks for all your hard work to put up a video like this! I can guarantee you, we all love it!
Watching you when you get one of these things running is like watching my kids on Christmas Morning.
