  • I picked up a new shotgun for the 2023 MN shotgun season. Took her out to the range to do a quick test run - running multiple sabot rounds.

    220 and remmy accutips were designed for each other, literally. Still the best bullet for that gun despite being a little lackluster on knockdown. Barnes expanders were the hardest hitter for that gun before they disappeared. Almost as accurate as accutips too.

  • @huntinbuddiesoutdoors6980

    Best ammo for those 220’s is Remington Accutip I’ve had multiple that all shoot 1in groups at 100yds

    This is what you get if you're in a shotgun only area for deer but want to get a bit longer range than a smooth/normal shotgun barrel with rifled foster slugs. The 300gr sabots also shoot very flat at 200 yards. After sighting in at 50 yards the hornady SST 300gr sabot slugs shoot dead on at 200 yard. This will group like that last group all the way out to 200 yards with the right sabot. We got a group with all shots touching/nearly same hole at 175 yards. A deer was taken at 230 yards and that's pretty darn impressive for a shotgun! My neighbor (cop) told me one of his coworkers tookan 8 point at nearly 300 yards with a 260gr sabot slug. Yeah the sabot slugs are best for this. It still does foster slugs ok but it's rifle like accuracy with sabot slugs. brenneke black magic slugs do very nice out of this too. It would have been nice to see grouping with one type of sabot slug instead of switching since they will all shoot slightly differently.

    I purchased a 220 like yours but in stainless. When I took it out of the box and looked it over, I noticed sloppy workmanship in the receiver and returned it and picked up an older model that doesn't have the adjustable stock. I saw one of the newer model 220s with the right hand thumbhole laminated wood stock and, if I didn't already have a 220, would have purchased it because the plastic stock is cheesy. What I noticed about my 220 is that the magazine sucks. I read about problems with the magazine which rattles and is best loaded with one shell, making it a two shot shotgun. The gun is accurate, I have to say. I too started off with cheap foster slugs to get on paper then went to more expensive sabots for the final zero. I have fired Litefields 2&3/4" 7/8 oz lead hollow points, 3" Remington Accutips and 3" Remington copper slugs which, are the most accurate.

    I have killed so many deer with my 220. I hunted a rifle restricted in TX where you could only shoot shotgun or archery.
    This thing was a game changer! My smooth bore 500 was very inaccurate with Foster slugs. I bought this and put down 5 deer and a handful of feral hogs. I never had to walk far from the kill site as everything dropped in its tracks. The ammo is pricey but the accutips are very accurate at distance. The farthest shot I took was at 140 yards on a broad side doe. The drop was minimal at that distance. I am taking it spring bear hunting in AK next year. Can’t say enough good things about this little slug gun!

    How's the recoil? I bought a maverick 88 12 gauge slug gun and use the hornady stx in 12 gauge. Everytime I shoot I bust the hell out if my lip (come to find out Mossberg's are notorious for recoil). I'm thinking of selling the maverick and going down to this 20 gauge savage.

    • @JackT81
      @JackT81  Před rokem +1

      The recoil is definitely a lot more manageable. I've tested quite a few slugs out of my Mossberg 535 (12 ga) and that thing kicks like a mule. One of the main reason I went with this gun too is that I wanted my 14 yr son to use this during the youth hunt. I made the mistake of having my son shoot the 12 ga and it scared him badly. After shooting the 220 - he very comfortable and proficient with it already.
