  • The world over, dating and marriage scams are a thing even in your own country. But when moving to a new country there are bigger gaps in cultural knowledge and cues and a general lack of resources that make the situation much more precarious and likely. As someone that married a non US citizen, I have been advising every young man I know to go outside the country to find a wife, and if they can, to stay there. For many reasons.
    Passportbros is a real movement that's gaining steam quickly. I expect a lot of American men to be going to Nicaragua long term to start families.

      So i went to Nicaragua. Proposed the girl said yes, shes 21 years younger than me and extremely poor and i am an upper middle class american, but she said she needs a letter of singleness from nicargua, which she applied for 8 months ago and claims that she still has not received it, so i told her something is off and i cut it off. Her family was devastated needless to say.

      Funny, considering how many of these foreign wives can screw you over just as bad as an American woman. My ex-husband's cousin had a mail order Russian bride who cleaned him out and went back to Russia. There's no guarantees, bud.
      Also, some cultures expect the husband to support the wife's parents, cousins, aunts and uncles...it becomes more expensive for him than if he had just married an American woman.

    Easy fix: Just keep things safe and out of reach back in your home country!
    I don’t see much benefit from opening a local bank account in Nicaragua anyway, specially if one can just withdraw from ATM’s locally using your US debit card (I use Schwab, fee-free)
    And if for some reason one really needs a local bank account, just don’t transfer your life savings nor use it to direct-deposit your SSA or VA benefits internationally into it!
    Then, RENT!
    If push came to shove there’s nothing they can take away from you, and also if there is a major disaster like a huge earthquake or civil war, you just pack your bags and leave without owning a property that will tie you down anywhere!
    The worst thing I can imagine is that you have a child in Nicaragua and the mother started using the kid to blackmail you, that’s I think the biggest vulnerability one can have.

      All true things. Although kid as blackmail and risk of civil war are all higher in most source countries. So you have to weight the risk of protecting yourself in one country only to expose in another.

    Great subject today . Only 10 months in country and I've had a woman tell me we should get married and I told her that Jeopardy was coming on and she should leave. And a realitor helping me find a apartment told me I'd be happier if I bought a house and I expressed that it would be 1-2 years before I even think of buying here and before I know if I truly want to remain here! This guy was a idiot no gift of gab he couldn't even pronounce the rooms and areas of the house correctly.. but yet those 2 peanuts turning in his head led him to believe I'd buy a house through him

    Scott i came to costa rica 7 years as a expat i meet a girl 2 years into my life in costa rica we dated for three years and then got married legally i jad a nice rental house and a decent car. She hated both of them so moved 3 times in the year we were together. Also sold my car and purchased a car in her name that i paid for thru payments . One year into the marriage she decided she didnot want to be married anymore and took the car. Also demanded 900000 colonies a month in alimony. Which was two thirds of my monthly income. The courts in costa rica have yet to finalize my divorce. But right now im not paying her anything for alimony. But she has the car. Yhis just brief of what happens in central america countries. So grntlemen be very careful about your dating relationships as a gringo in latin america.

    I love the episodes about personal subjects like this. I'm just embarrassed that those friends of yours that got scammed were fellow Canadians. We are too nice of people. Well, at least you don't have the same problems as Expats in Colombia. They're getting drugged and killed.
    Sorry to change subject but I wanted to ask you 2 questions:
    1. Have you ever been to the Oriental Market in Managua? If you have i must of missed it in your catalogue. What was it like? I watch a few Nicaraguan vloggers and they always say .."mucho peligros.." I've learned that means very dangerous.
    2. Are you planning on visiting the Caribbean coast ?

      There are plenty who have retired in Colombia and who are having a great retirement. Colombia is a great country to retire.

    How would you feel if your daughter fell in love from someone from there? Do you worry about her getting scammed or that the local person will not be able to take care of her financially? Is there an area where expats could meet more of the “upper class” (financially)?

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Před 7 měsíci +2

      If my daughter is going to fall for someone, I'd expect them to be from here. This is her world. Getting scammed or the risk thereof is a part of life. That can, and does, happen everywhere. I really don't worry about someone needing to take care of her financially, I've worked continuously since I was 13 and will be everything to the kids; and both of my daughters have strong career plans for their futures. They don't need to be taken care of in any way.
      If you want to meet the upper class, I don't know that there is an "area" but just... go out and do things. Nicaragua isn't as separated as the US or many other countries. You'll find rich and poor side by side in bars, neighborhoods, etc. The more you get to be a part of society, the more you'll know people from all walks of life.

      @@ScottAlanMillerVlog Very interesting answer and I understand what you’re saying. Everything always works out in the end 💝. I thought there’d be even more or a difference between the classes there than here so I’m surprised to hear that it’s very blended. A real sense of overall community. Can’t wait to go one day. I’m part Nicaraguan but have never been there yet.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Před 7 měsíci

      I wouldn't say that htere isn't a big disparity here. But there is lots of social mobility and the classes mix together. While the classes exist. they don't list in separate worlds likei in the US. @@gigigabrielle21
