How little it's talked about Albon doing THE overtake of this regulations era shows what a race it really was. Good fun indeed.
Edit: Tommy at least remembered, good.
It was excellent, but the second overtake was just the lucky result of Albon avoiding a crash, it was NOT as intended.
@@endthisnonsense7202It’s still a great overtake though. Probably the best we’ve seen with these regulations since 22’
@endthisnonsense7202 honestly that makes it even better that he somehow held it together and kept his nose clean 🤯
Yeah, put this clip next to Mika at Spa.
@@endthisnonsense7202 Of course it wasn't planned out from the get. But there came up an opportunity, and he took it. It was great to watch and a shame he got taken out by Carlos after
Ferrari took ‘together or nothing’ way too serious. Canada was the sacrifice for Monaco
Lol😂
Fred Vasseur and Leclerc's new race engineer were getting way too much praise after Monaco.
The F1 gods did the rest.
@@luckyspurs absolutely adore Leclerc, but the win in Monaco. Had more to do with Monaco than with Leclerc.
@@ethanv7330 He still needed to put it on pole.
It was WORTH IT…
Albon being taken out by Carlos because he didnt hold his brakes was heartbreaking.
He should get a grid penalty for that
For all that Russell gets crap for crashing sloppily a bit, Carlos does crash sloppily a bit.
Bad mistake from Sainz, why didn’t he hold the brake? F2 mistake
Speaking of Russell I was surprised his collision with oscar wasn’t looked at. Poor Oscar, if it isn’t sainz crashing into him it’s George.
@@Gaelic-Rex Russell made several mistakes, in fact after that touch with Piastri, Hamilton shows him how to pass Piastri without any risk.
Been a long term fan of this channel and both Matt and Tommy. Just a request, could we please have time stamps on these videos? It’ll be really really helpful.
Literally everything that could go wrong for Ferrari went wrong:
Wrong strategy in qualy, both out in Q2
Messy start
Engine problemes for Leclerc (lost +1.000 s on straights)
Floor damages (+wing) for Sainz (lost 0.6-8 s)
Pitted Leclerc for inter to hard (when pouring) to inter then retired
Sainz spin
Depression for all
It was the old Ferrari special. Perez didn't stop for a safety car. Sainz! Spinala! 😂
Pitting for hard as it dumped rain was the part that took me out 😂
He was losing 0.5s on the straight not 1s no?
@@Issam-od4pgThere was a later message where Leclerc said it felt worse than 0.5 and then the engineer replied with its about a second now.
@@Issam-od4pg From what I remember they said something about it being 1.0-1.2 s, but I could definitely be wrong
I was on the edge of my seat the whole race! Max really doesn’t get the credit he deserves sometimes. Last year he made something extremely difficult seam easy. This year he’s winning on skill. Don’t get me wrong the RB is still a good car, but it sure helps having one of the sports goats behind the wheel!!
U can’t be fr? He gets credit all the time 😂. I can’t with y’all verstappen fans. If max isn’t praised every second of every broadcast or video it’s an issue and everyone is a hater
RB was still the best car over the weekend.
Just because Russell got pole with the exact time doesn’t mean Mercedes was the fastest car. Russell almost got pole in a Williams in 2021.
@@paperplane-db8qfNo, it wasn’t. Second best, probably even third.
People love to overlook Max's skill, but just look at the difference between Max and Checo. Same car, totally different result in quali and the race.
Mercedes was better this weekend, even Mercedes admit that...
If a safety car had happened (which in changeable weather is more likely) to give haas a free pitstop, or even a red flag to let them go straight to slicks, then Haas would have looked like genius
Haas either needed that second batch of rain to come earlier, or the safety car you mentioned. The only other way it could've worked is if they started further up and could build a pit stop gap on P2
I heard that Haas believed that "everyone" would start on full wet, and were very surprised to find they were the only ones.
If Matthew Gallagher is a Max fanboy, he would be less stressful.

I knew K-Mags initial charge on full wets was due to send him dropping back eventually as the Inters came to life and the track dried, but that doesn't mean I wasn't facepalming when the pit crew botched his pit stop at 8 seconds , undoing ALL and then some , of the advantage that they had gained on those full wets.
i had the same reaction. the ruined all chances they had.
why would you facepalm for a driver that shoiuld have been banned this race? He is washed get over it

It was so good to be able to see the difference of wets vs. inters in changing conditions.

In imola and now Canada it was really fun to see max actually excited about winning. He claims that he prefers domination but you can hear on the radio that wins like this are much more enjoyable for him.
Drivers who say they prefer to be challenged all the time are lying. They all prefer to dominate and cruise to multiple WDCs. Fighting every race AND winning is an adrenaline rush and they will naturally be excited once they finish. But that doesn't mean deep down that they prefer it.
Hmm. Despite some evidence to the contrary, Max is only human and if it gets too easy and routine, he gets bored.
The Albon double overtake was most memorable to me, unreal
We got Alpine double points before GTA 6
And if they will gain 3 more points, they will surpass Haas in the constructors championship for 7th place
How is this exciting, they got double points almost every race last year
@@Rydabomb Maybe because of the expectations that people have for Alpine as a team for this year in contrast to last year when they were a certified midfield team

On the Lando issue, i can't speak with certainty that he would have won considering there were two safety cars which bunched up the field. And on the slicks the McLaren couldn't catch up with the Red Bull.
It’s tough because of the dry conditions but passing was really hard and Norris is very good at defending his position
Would have been fun to watch for sure
With no SCs (fantasy this weekend) he’d have won easily, the pace in changeable conditions was insane
It is hard to say but the only reason he was catching and was leading is because he's the best at tyre management on the grid currently, tyres were overheating and he kept them on good shyape, pulling a 13 second gap in that short time is a bit insane, I wouldn't put it down to car pace, coming from Lando fan
Oscar deserves heaps of respect for his afternoon. He definitely could have attempted to mug Lando a couple of times, when he went off track being one and he held station. I don't think there are too many drivers on the grid that would have had the same respect for their teammate as he did then. McLaren have got an exceptional pairing and there is plenty more to come from both of them 👌🏻
Tommy: I just loved that race!
Matt: Pushing back tears while looking at his Ferrari shirt
I was praying for a rain shower right at the start of the race, just to keep the haas train rolling. K Mag going through the pack like he was playing a video game on easy mode was so fun to watch.
Zandvoort last year was also a crazy wet/dry race with changing conditions like Canada this weekend

They should move Monaco to the wettest time of the year for that region to increase the chances of rain.
Too narrow of a track and drivers would be at risk of getting hurt in too many crashes .
@@Cindy-by3hothere is no risk of drivers getting hurt at Monaco
Since Monaco is wedged between mountains and the sea there is basically no way of predicting the weather. There is no wettest time there, it can start raining any time of the year just like that.

During the race: Will Leclerc get lapped by Logan?
After the race: DNF for the Ferraris and Logan.
Than was a fun race to watch, not being able to predict the winner after 5 laps and having so much happening. It was also nice that they stayed with the race most of the time and not forcing recaps down our throats and mostly just having them for things that was missed. They even found the picture in picture button 😜😜 enjoyed that very much even with Max winning, and he proving why he has been dominating so much, the car only takes you so far!
In Lollipopman style, Max has a little shrine that no-one knows about, dedicated to that dark day several years ago, when he had a slight off-day behind the wheel. For him to remember, and choose to keep leaving that far behind him. That it may never happen again.
"Those missed wins, they're not just defeats on the track, they're scars, etched into my soul" 😂😂😂
Thought I was the only Lollipopman fan here, glad I'm not 👍
Max is a driving machine, he is unbelievably good.
Anyone else remembers the Bernie era when he wanted to add sprinklers to the track to make it wet "randomly". ?
I wouldn't mind if they experimented with it during a few free practices.
It wouldn't fly by today, because of you know... F1 policy on reducing wastage
43:30 its also worth noting that Hamilton still took fastest lap too, so there is pace there...
I always look forward to the race reviews when Farrari is Italian

Or aston is british
Or Haas is American.
Ferrari...😂
Every year ferrari just shows how special Schumacher was to get it done - 5 times.
Best race i can remember for years. Action up and down the field, 3 teams and 5 drivers genuinely in the hunt for 1st. Changing conditions through the whole race making different cars look good at different times.
Brilliant.
Best race of the season yet
I don’t get why the Merc’s didn’t go on softs. Feels like either of them could’ve won but you could say that more for Norris, and for Piastri who seemed held up by Norris after the first stop
The mediums only just lasted so softs would of grained up really quickly . Especially as the rain just washed the grip away
Watching a race IRL was amazing I had yall stream open at some point but omg was the Family grandstand a vibe, everyone was hyped no matter who they supported
Im a bit bias cuz I am Canadian....but genuinely one of the best races Ive seen in a long time. It had everything! Overtakes, changeable conditions, a realistic 4/5 way fight for the win, a actual 5 way fight for the top 5, safety cars, different strategies, crashes.... Ugh so good. Hopefully Mercedes pace is true and we get yet another team having a realistic change of fighting for wins and Canada is just the start. Regardless, what a weekend, what a race. Very proud Canada was able to deliver and stand out!

As a Ferrari fan and been watching F1 since 84. This Ver kid is just on the next level. Always a huge Schumi fan…just knew Senna was the 🐐…but Max is doing things that are uncanny. Here’s the kicker, manchild is only 26!!! wtf
He is already the goat
Max hasn’t done anything that Schumacher hasn’t.
And Schumacher has done things that Max hasn’t. Like getting pole early in his career. Winning with Ferrari. Making Adrian Newey look like any ordinary engineer.
@@paperplane-db8qf based on your logic, early in career, Max is the youngest winner in history, youngest driver to ever be in F1. Won his first pole at a much younger age, championship at a younger age than Schumi. I love Schumi, but at same point of career, statistically Ver has done more. Sooooooo…. again, he’s only 26. He’s on pace to break every record in F1 etc. Michael will always be 1st in my ❤️ but I just see Ver perhaps getting to that goat 🐐 status with Senna. As of right now, I have Michael only behind Senna in terms of greatness.
@@user-fd4qq7yo6p verstappen needed 4.5 seasons to get his first pole.
Schumacher also had to get into F1 on his own merit with no money, and wasn’t carried through like Verstappen with his dad, Marko and RB pushing him through - giving him unlimited testing and practice sessions in karting, etc.
@@paperplane-db8qf you obviously don’t know Schumi’s upbringing. His father built him a karting track…basically in his backyard. How about the win, which is vastly more important than a pole. How did they get to F1? Actually Schumi had a vastly better upbringing according to himself and his brother Ralf….. the way Ver was treated & constant pressure was brutal and boarder line cruel. Money??? Jos drove a beat up Van to all his events. Wow you must be young & never raced at any real level. Should know both their histories. Schumi is amazing but everything he’s done has been done before and beaten/tied since. No one’s done the things Ver has done by the same age. Kids 26!!! He keeps going, he’ll have every record. But then again, records are made to be broken.
7:05 exactly!! Very happy for max to win it like this and show why he was best on the day!
@36:15 Piastri was faster than Norris after the safety car but cooked his tyres behind Lando. McLaren should have switched the cars then, rather than when they messaged them
Matt's face when Tommy gets lost in his explaining world lol (love you Tommy and go SuperMax)
Last year we had great races in Monaco and Zandvort (rainy) and aleo Monza was still a lot of fun and action
Ngl, I’m surprised at the lack of George Russel criticism, he’s yet again had an opportunity presented on a plate and instead he plowed into the side of his competitor at a random moment that gets forgotten about because other things happened in the race. He’s not mature enough to lead a team, while constantly attempting to outshine lewis (from a max fan aswell) he needs toto to reel him in, instead of just telling him to “concentrate” not a helpful/practical comment from a principal who clearly doesn’t know how to rebuild a struggling team
It was his first real opportunity to fight at front this year tbf. With tricky conditions everyone was making mistakes (Lewis also), 3 drivers ended in a wall and Yuki lost control and wasted his chances. Russell could have done more but at the same time he had some great moments especially at the end and at the beginning holding of Max. I just want Merc to finally provide a car capable of podiums battles and see how Russell will manage.
"he plowed into the side of his competitor" what race are you watching. He went wheel to wheel into a corner being a tire ahead and then backed off. Both Max and Lando went off the track in the race
Alborn could have scored points if he was NOT taken OUT by the Ferrari
This is a new one, Banger race and long podcast? lol
Matt your powers are incredible. Tsunoda got overtaken by the French tractors and binned it with 3 laps to go
Then DR got passed Ocon with ease. Who knows what's going on with Yuki, says he's confident on Saturday, yet the minute there's the slightest bit of pressure on track, he ruins his race.

Seeing everyone surprised over checos results is hilarious!
He did the same the majority of last year!

Max is truly an unbelievable driver but we also have to give huge credit to how well Redbull strategy team make decisions look so easy. Such a great combo
if magnusses pitstop was normal 2.5s he wouldve gained 3 extra places for 5 total places gain with the wets. also having newer inters at that point, it wouldve easily been better than the rest.

Zamdvoort 2023 was pretty spectacular too
29:40 i can tell you where lando was when the safety car was deployed, the local commentators where i am looked into it because they thought it was odd that he didn't pit
When the safety car was deployed lando was looking towards the wall of champions, he was literally in the corner right past the pit lane

@@SWOTHDRA We're already 1/3rd through. It's extremely unlikely. Adjusted for points, only 3 time has a larger points gap in the WDC been overturned. One was Kimi in 2007, the others are 1976 and 1964 and required someone dying and not racing for a few races and DNFs were the norm not the exception. So large swings happen naturally. It takes a team imploding and a driver imploding for it to happen. Max and RBR are just too consistent to drop this many points.

The Hass strategy was disrupted by Sargents safety car. If that didnt happen the cars ahead would have boxed under green to get new inters for the mid-race shower. Hass could have stayed out with less used up inters. If you factor in the difficulty passing on the drying track, Haas would have come out ahead. It was the best plan for a car in the midfield. I don't think this clever plan would have happened under Steiner.
I will say, the TV coverage could've been better I think. A lot of showing the front runners and just barely showing the last of the top 10. Plus cutting from two drivers missing the S2 chicane only to go to Piastri's onboard for no reason.
Realistically the ideal strategy for haas was probably pitting on lap 7, so you'd need to pick up over 3 seconds a lap to overcome the pit delta. So if you go back and decide your strategy with the benefit of hindsight, you're probably still starting on inters.
Landon Norris is a freaking monster now with that race winner mentality.
Yeah, real shame that McLaren weren't quicker on getting him in the pits when the safety car came out otherwise he would've had a great chance of winning.
Mercedes do not want Lewis beating George. Brawn GP documentary on Sky. Eccleston confirmed that teams do regularly make one driver car more faster. George is using Lewis data George confirmed this himself.

This race was honestly the best I've seen in a while - so many things happening at the same time!!
This SC situation hasn't been the same as in Miami at all, in Miami the SC came out and picked up the number 2 driver, not the number 1, this gave Lando the chance to stay ahead of Max and even the SC, something we had never seen before.
Besides that Lando also decided to stay out and go for another lap under SC conditions which caused him to be picked up by the SC, which is how it should be, if Lando would have pitted the first lap, which he could have cause the SC was deployed before he passed the pitlane, he would have came out in front of the rest who pitted behind him.
So no, it wasn't badluck nor was it a faulty SC procedure like in Miami, it was Mclarens decicion to keep Lando out, cause he could have gone into the pit straight away.
Thank you Tommy for getting those Ferrari and Leclerc jabs in so we could see Matt's face each time.
It was definitely a great race to watch. You could tell Lando and Max especially loved it. They seemed to enjoy the race itself more that the results. We need to bring in sprinklers for the other tracks now LOL.

Thought on Kmag: IF someone had wrecked and brought out a safety car, with Kmag up in 6th-5th-ish, they could have pit under the SC and been absolute rock stars. That's part of the strategy gamble, it be that way.
Circuit GV delivers because it has high speed straights, heavy braking into low speed corner complexes with important traction zones on exit. forget the Tilke high speed complexes you can't follow through without burning your tires, this is the model for any 'new' circuit to follow
Thank you for giving Albon his due, I was afraid you'd go the entire podcast without mentioning the overtake of the season.

The thought of Carlos Sainz Jr. standing on the top step in a white “Williams” race suit is so exciting. Do I think it’s gonna happen? Idk. But, just imagine a Williams Racing revival with Carlos and Alex. If Sainz signs, the sponsorship money would come rolling in which makes anything possible
Feel bad for TeamLH getting unfairly portrayed by the vocal minority of Lewis’s fans who act like delusional cultists. Making up excuses every, single time.
The truth is they both had a VERY good race and respect to both of them. Maybe CultLH could/should learn some humility and put some respect on Russell’s name. Given how George is now 8-1 in quali and 7-2 in races. With 55% of the team’s points and the only pole and podium for the team. Lewis is an incredible driver but so is George. I imagine they’ll get closer/even out by the end of the season. But there’s no need to be so toxic in the meantime.
Thank you for speaking the truth cause as a Lewis fan it’s a bit annoying getting labelled badly cause some small amount of people act like children and have very limited knowledge of the sport itself

Can we all please agree that tracks were rain is a factor are much more fun? Not constant rain, but like in this race. Wet tyres were awsome, the timing to change to slicks was very important, inter becoming slicks has a thing....
This was pure magic.
fully agree with Tommys take on Williams rushing Logan in. this is a constant convo my friend and I have been having since before the last F2 race of Abu Dhabi 22 when we were waiting to see if Logan would get it. they completely rushed him instead of giving him another year to keep developing, try and go for the F2 championship, etc. 1 year in F2 wasn't enough...
just to hit on the Williams topic quickly its so tragic that Alex didn't finish as if he did Williams would be ahead of alpine right now, this one race and Alex getting hit like that could be the difference between Williams and alpine at the end of the season especially since Williams doesn't have a second driver who can show up. I fell that sink should get some sort of penalty for that, there should be one for crashing someone out of a race. wether you meant to hit them or not you still hit them
“Best overtake” would be a good prediction category
Hot take: Intermediate tires shouldn't be in F1, Wets only
This race was like Zandvoort 2023. Changing weather conditions is the secret.
Why cant f1 go back to tire allocation with a gap in between compounds. Like when they'd do Medium, Soft, then ultra soft. I think thats how Danny Ric won in china
Just extra tire waste that wont change anything
Honestly though, I really hope Matt lets the whole "Piastri Leclerc" thing go by the end of the year.
Was at the race, it really felt like the promoter and local authorities were doing everything in their power to get the GP cancelled/not renewed for future years. They were called in to meetings with FIA and organisation TWICE. Once for the absolute disaster on Friday where they turned away THOUSANDS of fans, and the second time for not guarding the spaces with track access (the parts where there are the square holes in the fence) which led to some fans invading the track too early.
Did you guys forgot Zandvoort 2023?😅 New Overtake Records were set.
Magnessen had to fight thru the field for those positions, but lost all the time thru the pits. Had it been a front row car on wets, there would have been no traffic ahead and the car would have be some 8-10 seconds a lap for the first 2 laps and even if the delta crossover happened at lap 4-5, the leader would already be 25 seconds ahead with a free pitstop.
I do think there are times in races where Oscar is quicker than Lando but never gets offered the switch. In the race on Sunday when the radio came through he was under pressure from George and idk how they’d have swapped tbh
