I got the cassette tape box as a Christmas present from my parents in 1981. I loved all the eight tapes. Later on I was surprised to know that All My Loving in With the Beatles album starts without Ringo's hi-hat count. To me, that song definitely needs the first five counts. Even now I feel uncomfortable when I hear the song without it. First musical experiences in childhood give such dominative influence on life afterwards.

that mix was on an israeli 'greatest hits' lp, with alan aldridge's drawing of them as old men...i thought that was its first appearance, but apparently made its debut on the u.k. '62-'66 lp. i think. i still can't hear any bass on 'i'm down'...regards...

its odd, uh? the versions we hear first are often the versions we like best. its not a constant, but it is common. i think it has to do with "familiarity." humans just tend to embrace the familiar. i'm that way too. and like everything else, sometimes its a good thing and sometimes not so good.

Hey Andrew, a little update for you on the Ringo “Love Me Do”. The version on the US RARITIES comp came from a copy of the Canadian Capitol single (72076) that was owned by Ron Furmanek. The Canadian single was actually a needledrop of a UK Parlophone stock copy, sent by EMI with other contemporary releases to Canada for possible release. No idea what source was used for the World Box, but pretty sure it’s from a UK source. Cheers.

Hi Andrew. I own the UK and Japanase versions. The japanese is extremely quiet. I heard the mexican version many years ago and it was terrefic. Being a collector I bought the cassettes too. Due to age they sounded woobly, so I bought a second set, and the result was the same. Not being defeated I rescued them because i relize the problem was the mechanism inside the tapes. I bought new tapes (Maxwell) and I translated the tapes to their new cases, changed all the parts, and voila!, problem solved. The sound quality is excellent, quiet, cleand and direct. They go head to head with the vinyl, not distorsion or jumps. I will encourage owners of the cassettes to try. You will be suprise how good they sound! Thanks.

Hi Andrew, as usual great video. However I do have some minor corrections. The tracks “Long Tall Sally”, “I Call Your Name”, “Matchbox “, “Slow Down”, and “I’m Down” were previously available in stereo on 1976 compilation album “Rock n Roll Music”. Original UK and Japanese versions were used unaltered stereo mixes. And, as you know, the US version tracks were altered by George Martin. He added EQ, filtered the bass and placed in the center, and reversed the stereo image.

I got this UK 8LP box set on release Dec 1980 - £29.95, took about 3 weeks to arrive. The hook for me was the advertised unique stereo mixes here in the UK. Curiously, it arrived the day John Lennon's murder was announced.
Such a shame that some of the sleeves have wrong-era photos, & one is reversed (Paul is right-handed !!) + the "Help!" album is over-represented, having 12/13 tracks represented + it's borderline criminal that "All Together Now" was preferred over "Hey Bulldog" IMO.

Funny enough some Dutch copies (like mine) have a wrong label on Record 3 of the set. I received my French pressing (with sleeves pressed in Holland) just 4 days ago. It was your video that made me look for it. I don't know if I believed you about sound quality when I first watched your video, but you were definitely right and this set blew me away soundwise. It is definitely one of the best (if not the best) sounding Beatles records in my collection. The surprises came one after the other! Having been accustomed to the duophonic "P.S. I Love You" from "Love Songs", the song re-invented itself in here. "Misery" sounds as good as ever and the handclaps on "Roll Over Beethoven" sound as if executed in the same room as me! I have only played record 1 so far, but I'll definitely be making high-quality cassette copies of this to re-discover the Beatles as I move on! I did love vinyl/cd boxes before receiving this, but this one will definitely make me adore them. Thanks again for the nice little details and keep up the good work.

I own the UK and JPN versions of this set and like the mastering of the UK one better.
I have a question, which tapes were used to cut these sets? Did the Uk one use a generation earlier than the other boxes? When I look at the MFSL picture of the Abbey Road mastertape box there doesn’t seem to be an entree for this box as there was for example the blue album.

Very intrresting video. I'm from México and my parents bought me a copy of this when I graduated from junior high in 1986, which I believe was the last time they pressed it here. A couple of years ago, my Sister and I gave my nieces a japanese copy for their sweet 16

Thanks for this really interesting and informative review, Andrew. I remember this being advertised when I was a teenager and always wondered what it was like; I had no idea it contained so many interesting versions. A couple of weeks after viewing your review I saw this in a a second had vinyl shop in Christchurch, NZ for $80 so I bought it. It’s the NZ-variant with Readers Digest labels. The box is a little shelf-worn but the discs look unplayed. So pleased to have added this to my collection - thanks!

Mine are all the same mixes as described in this clip & sounds FAB !. Thanks for pointing out all the varous versions, I didn't realise they were on my LP's. Hello Andrew :The truth is that it is a very good set, I remember when the promotional disc arrived in the mailbox, I can't wait to put it on, but unfortunately it was lost in the mists of time.
In its day it was impossible for me to acquire it, luckily I was able to get one a year and a half ago.
The edition that I have is the Spanish one, differences with the English one, since all the songs are the standard ones published in Spain, except for "I feel fine", "All my loving" does not have the intro, "And I lover her" it's the normal one with four bars and not six, as well as "The continuing" which does have the flamenco guitar at the beginning.
The box comes with a flap to open on the front and includes a text booklet, apart from the text that appears on the back covers of the discs.
The disc labels are red with black text, the reference number for the first one is: 10c 164-007.560.
    The covers are laminated.
But overall a must have set with a great sound.
    Greetings from Spain

09:08 I want to point out that noise reduction wasn't invented by the late 80's, which means that the 1980 version of Love Me Do probably has different EQ choices when compared to the version that appears on Mono Masters.

  • @kalebaldwin5398
    @kalebaldwin5398 Před 3 lety +1

That mix of "I'm Only Sleeping" was actually first made available on record club pressings of Yesterday And Today. And it was subsequently included on random pressings standard stereo LP (it is common to get "I'm Only Sleeping" and "Doctor Robert" in true stereo, but "And Your Bird Can Sing" in fake stereo --- which my early '70s Apple label pressing is --- or vice versa), and on the cassette.
    Some other anecdotes:
"P.S. I Love You" is in fake stereo, just as it was on the stereo Please Please Me LP.
The now-common stereo mix of "This Boy" was created in 1963, alongside the original stereo mix of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (which has only been released in Australia). I say this because the vocals are panned to the right, with the guitars in the middle (same as IWHYH), and it is a way better mix than any of the mixes made in 1966 for the "Oldies" LP.
The four Long Tall Sally EP tracks are from the U.S. version of Rock 'n' Roll Music, with reversed channels and boosted bass.
The stereo mix of "I'm Down" (as it appears here) had already been released in the U.K...on the original double-LP version of Rock 'n' Roll Music, which did not use George Martin's "reworked" mixes.
The original 1965 stereo mix of "Day Tripper", which had been on 1962-1966 (but not A Collection of Beatles Oldies) is used.
"Paperback Writer" and "Rain" are from the Hey Jude LP (I can tell because "Paperback Writer" has reversed channels); I assume they are from the same source tape as the U.K. version of that album, which had been released in May 1979.
"A Day in the Life" is from 1967-1970, with the intro faded in.
Some of the other White Album tracks have wonky indexing, particularly "I'm So Tired", "Piggies", and "Don't Pass Me By"...I think this is because these songs are supposed to flow right into "Blackbird", "Rocky Raccoon", and "Why Don't We Do it in the Road?", and not be cut off.
I'm pretty certain John's "The Queen says no to pot-smoking FBI members" line at the beginning of "For You Blue" was cut.

According the “The Beatles Recording Sessions “ The stereo mix of “This Boy” was done in 1966. It was actually a mistake. A stereo mix of “Bad Boy” was requested for “A Collection of Beatles Oldies”. However there was a misunderstanding and the engineers prepared a stereo mix for “This Boy”. Once they realized their mistake they shelved the mix for “This Boy” and mixed “Bad Boy” as originally requested. The stereo mix of “This Boy” was first released on a Canadian single in the 70s b/w “All My Loving”.

My dad got this on cassettes back in '81 and I'm sure he only played one of the tapes once. In 1987 I discovered the box in his studio and the tape were stuck in the cartridges and with a lot mold or rust thanks to humidity. He gave it to me and I spend quite some time cleaning the tape and changing the cartridges. It sounded pretty good, it was the mexican version and I played that cassettes over and over for more than 10 years.
