Veverka obecná (Sciurus vulgaris) je středně velký hlodavec z čeledi veverkovitých (Sciuridae).
Popis
Délka: 19 - 23 cm
Hmotnost: 250 - 340 g
Délka ocasu: 14,5 - 20 cm
Má zrzavou, černou a někdy hnědou srst.
Huňatý ocas napomáhá udržovat rovnováhu při lezení a skocích na stromech a veverka ho využívá jako „pokrývku“ těla při spánku.
Charakteristickým znakem jsou střapce chlupů na ušních boltcích směřující do špičky, které jsou viditelné především v zimním období.
Drápy jsou ostré a zakřivené drápy a pomáhají při lezení po větvích stromů.
U pohlaví není vyvinut sexuální dimorfismus.
Zbarvení srsti se liší podle lokality rozšíření a období, ale vždy je srst na břiše a hrdle zbarvená krémově až bíle.
V Česku se nejčastěji objevuje červená a černá forma, ve světě se objevuje i šedá nebo čistě bílá forma.
Srst mění dvakrát ročně. Zimní srst je hustší a o něco tmavší než letní.
Výskyt
Široké území v rozmezí od západní Evropy až po východní Asii.
V České republice ji nalezneme v lesích všech typů, parcích, alejích, větších zahradách nebo hřbitovech se stromovým porostem.
V dutinách stromů, někdy i na tlustších větvích, obývá v průměru 25-30 cm velké hnízdo, ve tvaru kukaně, tvořené mechem, listy, trávou a kůrou.
Chování
60 až 80 % dne tráví hledáním potravy.
Žije až na období rozmnožování samotářským způsobem života. Je schopna vypnout tělo do tvaru křídla, čehož využívá při delších skocích. Není teritoriální a domácí území jednotlivých jedinců se značně překrývají.
Je aktivní přes den, ale ve vrcholné části dne je většinou ukryta ve svém hnízdě. V zimě nehibernuje, ale tráví ve svém hnízdě větší dobu než v létě.
Dokáže se pohybovat rychlostí až 19 km/h.
Potrava
Především semena šišek, houby (které si suší), ptačí vejce, různé plody, např. oříšky, ale občas si pochutná i na čerstvé míze.
Část nalezené potravy si uschovává do svých „spižíren“ v dutinách stromů, které ji poskytují výbornou zásobárnu potravy v nejtěžších obdobích.
Rozmnožování
U některých jedinců probíhá páření již na konci zimy a na počátku jara, ale obvyklejší doba páření je v letním období, během června a července.
Po setkání dvou partnerů začne samec svou partnerku honit po stromech a tak činí až do hodiny před spářením.
Samice může mít i 2 vrhy za rok, přičemž jeden vrh obsahuje obvykle 3 až 6 mláďat, která se rodí po 38 až 39 denní březosti. Mláďata se rodí slepá a téměř holá a po narození váží 10 až 15 g. Plně osrstěná jsou po 21 dnech života, oči se jim otevřou po čtyřech týdnech a chrup se jim plně vyvíjí až po 42 dnech, kdy začínají požírat pevnou potravu. Samice je však kojí až 10 týdnů po narození.
Ohrožení
Veverka obecná je ve většině států Evropy chráněným druhem. To platí i v České republice, kde je prohlášena za ohrožený druh.

The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus common throughout Eurasia. The red squirrel is an arboreal, omnivorous rodent.
Description
Head-and-body length: 19 - 23 cm (7.5 - 9 in)
Tail length: 15 - 20 cm (6 - 8 in)
Weight: 250 - 340 g (8.8 - 12.0 oz)
The species is not sexually dimorphic.
The underside of the squirrel is always white-cream in colour.
The long tail helps the squirrel to balance and steer when jumping from tree to tree and running along branches, and may keep the animal warm during sleep.
It has sharp, curved claws to enable it to climb and descend broad tree trunks, thin branches and even house walls. Its strong hind legs enable it to leap gaps between trees.
Habitat
Boreal, coniferous woods in northern Europe and Siberia, preferring Scots pine, Norway spruce and Siberian pine.
In western and southern Europe they are found in broad-leaved woods.
Food
Mostly the seeds of trees, fungi, nuts, berries and young shoots. Rarely bird eggs or nestlings.
Excess food is put into caches, either buried or in nooks or holes in trees, and eaten when food is scarce.
Life
Mating occur in late winter during February and March and in summer between June and July.
Up to 2 litters a year per female. Each litter usually contains 3 to 6 young. Gestation is about 38 to 39 days.
The young are looked after by the mother alone and are born helpless, blind and deaf and weigh between 10 and 15 g. Their body is covered by hair at 21 days, their eyes and ears open after 3 to 4 weeks, and they develop all their teeth by 42 days. Juvenile red squirrels can eat solids around 40 days following birth and from that point can leave the nest on their own to find food; however, they still suckle from their mother until weaning occurs at 8 to 10 weeks.
