I really enjoy your reactions to Pink Floyd. You see I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan since the early 70s, when they were really starting to be known in the U.S. They are a phenomenal band that creates the most passionate, emotion filled music you'll ever hear from a Rock band. Listeners to Pink Floyd FEEL their music as much as listen to it. The lady singing here is the incredible Clair Torry, a 25 year old unknown British singer that Pink Floyd contracted to do this one song. They told her what they wanted, and they suggested that she think about death and horror,... and then go into the studio and improvise something over the music. She did 3 takes and Pink Floyd used a blend of all three on the recording. I think you would really enjoy 'Comfortably Numb',... a Classic Pink Floyd song from The Wall album. The studio version is incredible, and the live performances are simply off the charts! And there are many live performances of the song, one of the most iconic is from their 1994 Pulse Concert. Many have said David Gilmours guitar solo from that song, from that Pulse concert, was the "Greatest Guitar Solo of All Time",... quite an endorsement. I'll be looking for more PF, thanks!
Thank you so much! I've actually listened and reacted to comfortably numb, it was the first pink floyd i ever listened to! It opened up the rabbit hole i'm stuck in right now and not wanting to get out! I'm so looking forward to watching the live performance!
I do too. This song takes me to another place ❤️ I love Pink Floyd since I was a kid and I am now 37. This song still gets me teary eyed. Like you said Rock on Pink Floyd ❤️
@@TheMartjl28 The entire album is a masterpiece. I can't just listen to one or two songs, I have to listen to the whole thing from start to finish. It's one of the greatest pieces of art ever created. I discover something new each time I hear it, and I cry to at least one of the songs, every time.
I've listened to this song countless times and shed tears every time, it just gets me. With her voice she takes us through the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Amazing!
Clare Torry knocked so many socks off of folks with this studio recording, performed after only a couple run-throughs with minimal suggestions and instructions from the band members. She's immortal now. There are several female vocalists who've done pretty good versions, but Clare's is the original and the others are simply following her footsteps.
@@bikbok1019 Mine too, I still have it, along with the The Wal. Two treasured possessions. My eldest loves Floyd and a number of other early 70's bands, which just makes me feel warm inside.
Great Gig in the Sky is about death and a persons natural reactions to it. The first part is denial then rage and finally acceptance. The singer's name is Clare Tory and she opened her soul and let it bleed in this song. She performed two complete takes, the second one more emotional than the first. David Gilmour asked for a third take, but halfway through Torry stopped, feeling she was getting repetitive and had already done the best she could.
The thing about Dark Side Of The Moon is that is is really one whole piece, flowing one song into the next. To get the full impact, it's best to listen to the whole album at once, straight through.
Well, two connected pieces. You're allowed to stop and recover after this one before you stagger over to the record player and turn it over for the second half.
Clare Torry is the singer, she was a session singer and she got paid £30, in the end she went to court for amore appropriate (undisclosed sum) because she felt she co wrote the song with her amazing vocals. She won the case. Dark Side of The Moon is amazing and you really have to lie in a dark room to let it take over. I love your reaction,
interesting facts that I never heard before but tbh it is irrelevant to the reaction of the music don't you think... if I just heard about this 45 years later, why would a brand new first time listener even care. Just sayin'
Pink Floyd is simply the greatest band ever and Dark Side of the Moon is a masterpiece. I've been fortunate enough to have seen them live three times. I also saw Roger solo three times and Dave solo four times! I'll never forget being 10th row at the LA sports arena and Dave was standing on top of "The Wall" playing the Comfortably numb solo!!
And she did it in one or two takes. She did it once and they said Again and she did it Again and they said Again and she said No, That's all I had. And a couple of weeks she's in a record store and Hears herself!!! Whoa ♥️ I think she got like a hundred or maybe a couple hundred bucks for the gig, but she toured with them a little bit, I think. Peace Love and Understanding ( or ROCKNROLL). ♥️🌵
I was surprised that she was a tiny WHITE CHICK!!! (I'm white, weird, huh? She just sounded like I'd never heard a white chick sound. I thought. Then I found out that I've been listening to Timi Yuro singing What's a Matter, Baby? (Is it hurtin' you) since I don't know the early 60s and I just found out a couple of years ago that she was. She was Italian-American and she was trained for Opera! Great Blue-Eyed Soul!!!
There are lyrics you just have to listen carefully. First is at the beginning.... Man speaking: And I am not frightened of dying Any time will do, I don't mind Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime The second is towards the end and you really have to listen for it... Woman says: If you can hear this whispering you are dying
The song always reminds me of my mother protecting me as child. I lost her in a terrible way far too young. Thank you for allowing the music to take you to those other places. That’s the Pink Floyd way.
This song has such a common thread at least to me. The man talking at the beginning sets the theme. And then the haunting soulful voice seems to take us through the universal human experience of death. At first, she fights it, tries to resist, refuses to believe it. Then as reality sets in she is overwhelmed with grief over an un finished life. Later as she seems to finally accept it, she begins to feel melancholy peace, and a new appreciation of life. Beutiful.
I've heard this maybe a thousand times, and it still gets me. Thanks to Alan Parsons for insisting that they Use Clare Torry for this, what an amazing talent. She briing us through the struggle of dying beautifully.
My father passed away last December. He was 70 years old. He has been a pianist and musician all of his life. I’m 30 years old and grew up with my aunt and my dad together listening to Pink Floyd and playing music. I haven’t listened to PF for a while now but just went back to it. That song especially makes me cry so much… I don’t even usually cry, it’s very rare. It not just makes me cry but makes me feel so connected with my father. It is so special. I don’t even exaggerate, it’s just happening like that.
It's such an amazing performance. She sure set the bar high. Can you imagine the tough job for any singer trying to do this (or just anything similar) on stage at any of their gigs after this, to a large audience who had all heard this previously. Must have been one of the hardest jobs in music history.
Hello Sister Sarah, the singer was told to sing about death without using words. This voice was her addition and pinkfloyd added the ambiance to perfection. Thank you for sharing your experience.

It's always wonderful to watch a new generation discovering Pink Floyd. I remember buying The Dark Side Of The Moon as a 14 year old in 1973 upon its release and being completely blown away by it and then rushing to friends house and telling him that he HAD to hear this. Still have that original copy that is now pretty beat up. God only knows how many times I played it.

Yes, Miss Sarah this is an emotional song simply because Pink Floyd digs deep into thew farthermost recesses of your inner core to grab your soul and take it on a universal journey of events and places you've never experienced only to land you safely back onto terra firma. The greatest band of all time!! I was 14 when I was introduced to them and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. When I was 15 I went to see the Pink Floyd laser light show at the Hayden Planetarium in NYC and was mesmerized. I feel something different every time I listen. They get you in your soul
Yeah here's another little tip a little tidbit of information the name of the band was coined by Syd Barrett who was the original founder of the group he named it after 2 great Blues musicians their names where Pink Anderson and Floyd Council two very talented yet obscure Blues musicians of African American descent
it gets you so emotional cos they are just that fucking good it is one masterpiece the entire album is a mindblowing experience and that is when your sober if your stoned you will never be the same again

Oh my God! That Sounds wonderful! I'll surely listen to that! Shes got such an angelic voice! Thank you so much!
Wellcome to Pink Floyd!
I think it takes a woman to really feel the emotions in this song. Sound sexist but I’ve seen dozens of these reactions to this song and women just get it. So powerful
Welcome to The Dark Side of The Moon! Now, listen to it all at once. enjoy
Thank you!
That’s the best way to listen to Floyd…..eyes closed and don’t just listen…..experience it.
The biggest Vibe-out band of All Time!
That song doesn't need any words, it says it all on it's own.
It's a vocal "tour de force".
Honestly
I wept with you. I’ve been weeping with the song for half a century.
It doesn’t wear thin or get old. It gets better.
Wellcome to the sound of the floyd
If there is tears on the first listen then you got it....
It really did😅
Been listening to this since the 1970s and it still makes me tear up sometimes
Yeah here's another little tip a little tidbit of information the name of the band was coined by Syd Barrett who was the original founder of the group he named it after 2 great Blues musicians their names where Pink Anderson and Floyd Council two very talented yet obscure Blues musicians of African American descent
Wow I didn't know that.
Cool! Thanks for the info! ♥️💐🌵
So nice to see young people of today reacting to the music of my youth. Pink Floyd is one of the best groups ever. Love them
it gets you so emotional cos they are just that fucking good it is one masterpiece the entire album is a mindblowing experience and that is when your sober if your stoned you will never be the same again
Pink Floyd should be put in the same category as the great composers like Beethoven Mozart etc. it's not rock music or pop. it's music that will always be admited
