Smoke Alarm Randomly Going Off | Easy Fix!

- If your smoke alarm keeps randomly going off (even after dusting and cleaning the unit) chances are the alarm is more than ten years old and it needs to be replaced. Almost every smoke alarm manufacturer, as well as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), details that smoke alarm sensors go bad every ten years. Many homeowners neglect to replace hardwired smoke alarms as the wiring aspect can be confusing and dangerous. This video gives a better, in detail, understanding of how the replacement process works and shows that it can be done.

All my KIDDE, smoke alarms in the middle of the night power outage occurred, and then tried replacing the battery, and then tried resetting it testing it, and tried cleaning it. But it kept on going off and this video really helped and replaced it with simplisafe

I’m moving to a new house that has old smoke alarms and spots with no smoke alarms at all, it will be fun to install, my grandpa also recently bought a new house and I get to replace the smoke alarms there as they are more than 10 years old
For the expiration, we keep being told that it would just keep chirping and not sound like an actual fire report. (in the manual, when 10 years is up for the "usual-consumer-grade-smoke-alarms")
BTW, I experienced a problem with a couple, including even a more recent First Alert one that didn't even sound likely to be "expired", randomly giving alarm indicating smoke and then it stopped by itself. I actually wonder if this can indicate a wiring problem. The first incident, in 2016, was with with a later-looking Kidde in a house that was known to have a bad neutral.
It wasn't expired, TMK. The second incident, was with the First Alert/BRK with voice and lower tone model, downstairs on the northeast-side and it hasn't done that for months now, IIRC.

We had a Ademco 5808 LST Wireless Smoke / Heat detector that would go off in the fire alert tone every spring 3 years.

If you have some smart speakers like alexa, it will notify the fire department and you can be getting a call from a family member or neighbor while you're at dinner with your family that your house is on fire to find out the alarm is just going off randomly.

all mine going crazy and I have outdoor alarm and strobe. Caused an absolute scene, all my alarms from 2007. I do not understand why you just cant press OFF somewhere

Look seems I’m gonna ask the same question I’ve seen a few times but see no reply to there’s . I am renting I recently changed out all the batteries and now they randomly keep going , matter of fact it was 5 am that it just went off and some how I am here . The question I suppose I am asking is am I to replace all of them?
Do you know why it would go off even after replacing the whole system and using new batteries. It originally chirped even after battery change. When it continued, I changed the whole system. Now it is going off (blaring like there is a fire) at random like once or twice a week.
I had a kidde dual technology smoke detector and it was nothing but trouble. It would go off randomly even when there was literally nothing wrong. It was like it was complaining about simply existing. My advice isn't to avoid double detection, but to buy both types separately.
True. I just got a brand new one installed and the POS is going off less than six hours after the install. Total junk.
@@dave23024The dual detection are actually way to easy to set off, because there is no way to avoid setting it off, so there is basically nowhere in the house where that works. Replace immediately if you have them

Our fire alarm kept on going off every 5-10 minutes and didn’t have the breakers and so he just grabbed a screw drive and jammed it into the little connection thing on the back and that seem to work
We moved into a new built house it has ent even been a year and about once every week they are going off and saying fire wen there is no fire we have cleaned them replaced the battery but nothing helps
I like that you turned off a 240 volt breaker for your example as opposed to the actual breaker that the smoke detector is on.
Nah his house is just different his smoke alarms need 40 amps and 240v

I once also had some temporary traffic lights outside the house and the whole time they were there every time the lights changed it set me alarm off where the 2 in house send signals to each other and the damnd things were picking up the signal the light were useing apart from sneaking out and disconnecting the temporary lights on the street I was unable to find a propper fix. The alarms have started to sound again and this time theres no roadworks out front what could it be this time
What if its a sealed battery and not hardwired?
My father bought brand new kidde alarms and they went off 6,times in a night, never figured out what caused it but it hasent happened since
I got a new smoke detector I got a 2019 it keeps going off every 5 minutes every time I go lay down it goes off and then it's just got a battery not very long ago my daughter put it in but it keeps on going off I mean I lay down could there be something like a wire burning in the outlet can you tell me that
we got a first alert smoke alarm in 2020. the one in my room kept having problems. we changed the batteries and it worked!
until 7:am i kept hearning beeping. then we replaced it.

This doesn’t work for a typical home smoke detector. You’ll need a whole fire alarm system, with a pull station and actual alarms
I thought this video would help because our First Alert smoke and co detector went off the morning for no reason but the manufacturer date said 4-15-2016
Hey, s.e.r I was just wondering which one do you prefer kiddie or first alert? I don’t know what one to install in my house I know everything about ionization and photoelectric. But my parents don’t and they refused to listen to the information please can you tell me which company is better so that way I can at least steer them in the right direction. The brand doesn't really matter too much, they both have to meet the same standards. Whatever smoke alarm you get, just make sure it's a reputable brand. Don't get some generic smoke alarm you find on eBay just because it's cheap, they likely do not meet the standards that the "big name" smoke alarms do. In terms of whether ionization or photoelectric is better, it really is best to have at least one of each type in your home. If you can only go with one, I'd install photoelectric alarms since they are much better at reducing false alarms and have a significant advantage over ionization alarms when it comes to smoldering fires.

No

I just replaced the whole alarm, because the last one had a malfunction. The new one keeps going off. I have white, black, & orange wire. The orange wire doesn’t connect too anything.
mine is doing this, it is 9volt battery only though, its 4 years old, it does 3 beeps and then shuts up, i happened about 2 days ago, and it did it again

My smoke alarms are hardwired, but the wire thhat interconnects them was never installed when he house was built
Just to say, some houses will have yellow wires for interconnect instead of red. It is the same thing. Always match the black and white wires, and the remaining wire is the interconnect.
I have a First Alert 9120B smoke alarm and I wired it to a plug
I have heard that the Nest Protect Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm can malfunction and set off a False Alarm just like the Alarm in your video there.

Yes. If you take just the battery out it won’t work. If you want to go that route, take the battery out AND go to the breaker box and shut off the power. They’ll finally shut up.
This happened to me with a new pack of alarms. No matter if I put a new battery in them two keep going off about a minute after replacing the battery.
I mean it’s an effective way to get you to change it but also an effective way to almost give people a heart attack thinking their house is burning down in the middle of the night!
I worked with live wires before you just gotta be careful with it if you can’t access the panel like my old job because we had fans and pumps to keep the bubbles up over the tennis courts and heat

Sometimes I think the house is trying to tell me something. The spirit of the house or some thing here’s trying to protect the house. I know it is actually I just realized a few times I left the candle on and got up in the middle of the night at about three in the morning and went straight down to the mantle where the candle holder is and there it is still lit even though we thought we double checked all the candles that’s happened twice. The question is why did I get up and go straight to the candle 🕯
Alarm in new mobile home keeps randomly going off in only one room every few weeks. I've put in a new battery, cleaned it, unplugged it, reset it... I have done this 3 times in the last 5 weeks or so and it keeps happening. At this point I can only guess that this one smoke alarm is faulty and needs to be replaced. Oh the other thing is it will beep every minute for like 15-30 minutes after I've gone through all these steps and then stop beeping... but who knows when it will wake me up again!!!!!!!
HELP!!! I literally have no more smoke detectors in this house and the beeps are still coming out of the bracketed outlets with the wires hanging out. Can someone help? I am literally going crazy now. Can't find a video that deals with this.
After reading one of the comments a lightbulb went off. There was a carbon monoxide plug-in down under a windowsill that I found. I unplugged it and took the battery out and it stopped! For those of us who don't have good directional hearing, it can drive you absolutely insane. I had forgotten that thing was even there. Been there since we discovered a gas leak about a year ago.
Yeah we went without any for quite a few days. I bet those old alarms are going off in the dumpster right now for all I care.

Mine started going off by just boiling a pot of pasta, then 6 times randomly last night, it’s a monoxide and smoke alarm by Kidde, I changed the backup battery and it continues, my dad didn’t know what to do either so I called the fire department just in case it was monoxide, I feel bad that I called them at 4am, they tested for gas but they said it looked fine and that the smoke alarm is just old, it’s a 2016 and now it’s 2023 , im so pissed! i kept waking up scared to death running to the smoke alarm to hush it only for it to go off again 😒 wish i had seen the comments about the duel detecters sooner, and if i knew i could have just ripped it off the wall
This happened multiple times yesterday in my new house so I unplugged the culprit. The alarm sounding was 10 years old and the other 4 are almost 20 years old so I think I just need to buy 5 new detectors
I’ve bought 2 smoke alarms that say they are supposed to last 10 years. After a few months they start to go of randomly. They don’t have replaceable batteries. I couldn’t change the alarm because I had just had spinal surgery. So it just kept waking me up all night long. 😭

You should do a series where you put a smoke alarm up, test it with smoke, then in number 2 there a different one
This happened in Cedar Lake. While I was sleeping, it was 2:56 am in the morning when suddenly, all smoke alarms go off multiple times until the stopped going off at 4 am.
