    What is the Pauper format? Pauper is a format which only uses common cards. With the exception of a small banlist, any card that has been printed at the common rarity level in a set or product.
    Other than that, Pauper is like most other games of constructed Magic: Decks must consist of a minimum of 60 cards with an optional 15 card sideboard, and so forth.

    Pauper is the best competitive format.
    There is no "pay-to-win" aspect in it, it is very easy to get into and it is slower than the other formats, meaning that the games are intriguing to play and watch as well.
    The decks are so cheap that basicly everyone can make a "top tier" pauper deck. I mean, a single Mana Crypt, Tarmogoyf, heck, even some lands cost more than a pauper deck.

      ***** Which one is? I really only play Legacy and Draft, so I don't know whether you're saying Paper Pauper or Tiny Leaders is sanctioned. I'm assuming you mean Paper Pauper? I'd play some Paper Pauper if they actually held any events for it.

      @brennonr Před 9 lety +1

      technically, under the new rules a store can "sanction" any format they want. However, wizards does not officially support pauper or tiny leaders as a paper based tournament.

    Thank you professor I've been waiting for this one. Pauper is how I got back into magic with my 14 year old daughter while going through chemotherapy. It's funny she's runs a similar Delver deck to the one in your video. I myself like monk black and also use Coumbajj Witches along with oubliette and grey merch. The owner of my lgs even makes and sells pauper deck for $7. It's the perfect way to get into the game. I just wish it had more of a presence in paper.

    Best magic channel on the web honestly, what a pleasant man to listen too. May i ask i love Arcanis the omnipotent, but my local play group calls me a casual for running him in my flicker U/W deck. Is arcanis not worth playing jsut because he's 6 mana? the drawing cards, bonus and 3/4 body allowing him to get down and dirty i think he's great :\

    • @TolarianCommunityCollege
      @TolarianCommunityCollege  Před 9 lety +36

      Vis brah You think he's great? You love him? You enjoy playing him? You're no casual, you're an EDH/Commander PRO because the goal of the format is to HAVE FUN. If you AREN'T having fun playing with your deck, that's when you start looking for things to change.

    • @viseman9253
      @viseman9253 Před 9 lety +2

      Thank you so much for the response, but im not an EDH player i play a modern U/W flicer deck with Venser, and so happen to have arcanis, as my later game card to help ensure the win, but people make fun of me for using that card

    • @Arvensa
      @Arvensa Před 9 lety +1

      Vis brah Does it work? If yes, I say you get Style Points. I also love Venser, having a pet flicker-proliferation artifact table-top deck with multiple copies of him.

    • @viseman9253
      @viseman9253 Před 9 lety +1

      i love my deck it's worked pretty well, granted Arcanis Doesn't always make it out i run only 1 copy, but yeah i play with lore and flavor in mind. I love flicker mechanic with my Venser, Resto angel, etc But Venser, Arcanis, and Teferi are my fav characters in magic i like running them. Being able to fight with 3/4 body is also nice. It's just annoying being called a casual, a lot of people say Arcanis sucks, i really don't get why.

    • @Arvensa
      @Arvensa Před 9 lety

      Vis brah
      If you and Arcanis live long enough to activate his ability more than once, you'll probably win that game.
      After the first turn that you cast him, his self-preservation ability can be handy, although it is mediocre at best.
      People have an issue with him because of his heavy blue cost, his high cost in general combined with lack of haste, and the fact that creatures die easier than spells to just about everything other than Blue permission.
      You used to be able to neutralize him with a copy effect as well, but the Legend rule revamp put a stop to that.

    Thank you for introducing me to this format. I just feel so happy building a deck and looking through the old cards.
    Since I started in way back during fourth edition, I only sparingly collected boosters but never was hardcore enough to get play sets of super rares and such. Let's put it like this: I was buying alliances packs when they first came out and I never saw a force of will. I did buy a couple packs every few weeks.
    Thanks to pauper, I built a delver deck with cards I had lying around, I used force spike and stymied hopes instead of daze and such.
    Thank you. My tournament yesterday was fun, I look forward to going back.

    I have been playing MTG fairly in depth for the past 8 months and been trying so hard to build budget, Modern friendly decks to play with my casual group. I have had little to no success (not a single win so far) with any strategy, and I don't have the money for the killer rares I need.
    Enter the Professor and his Pauper series. I've been watching several videos over the past few days and I think I've found my new love in Magic. These Pauper decks could wipe the floor with my group and do it without any rares... and for the cost of a playset of a single card I could have a full deck.
    I'm sold. Thank you Professor. My wife will surely appreciate me spending less on cards and my group will finally feel my wrath unleashed.

I'm in the learning-a-lot phase and addicted. The premise of "Pauper" you discussed is intriguing. It would have been nice if you mentioned magicgatheringstrat, both their website and youtube channel. They are doing the finest of work for and in the Pauper community for years now, be it Standard Pauper or Classic Pauper. I think they deserve a shoutout as they have literally thousands of Pauper videos on their channel, a weekly podcast and they covered pretty much every. Pauper Deck imaginable, be it homebrew or Tier 1 Deck, how to play or beat it respectively. Great video as always though, thank you very much for the exposire of this amazing format. I just recently got back into Magic after having not played competitively in about 14 years, or even casually in about 7 years. By "got back into" I basically mean I've been watching tons of videos like this, and tons of videos on ChannelFireball to see what decks/cards are good and popular right now. Basically, just trying to increase my knowledge from all the years I've missed. Anyway, I didn't really see myself being able to afford Magic again any time soon, due to having kids and other responsibilities, but this Pauper format sounds perfect! I'm definitely going to try it out, although, I do feel a bit overwhelmed. There are SO many commons!

  • @evilgeniusentertainment

    Just found your channel. Been playing MTG since the beginning, but of course like many older players, I'm only recently getting back into it. I simply love this idea. For $100, a guy like me could build 4-5 decks and actually compete. Perhaps even better, my kids could do the same. Not sure MTG needed saving, but the pauper format might at the very least keep the game vibrant and alive. Awesome video; thanks for all of them. liked/subbed

    Professor, awesome video as always. It would be great if you make a video talking about the difference between the Online Pauper card pool and the Paper Pauper card pool and how they use it there. Here in Brazil, for example, our Pauper National Championship uses the paper common card pool with the Wizards online banlist, and for me it doesn't make complete sense, lol.
    Ah, sorry for my poor english.

    I recently started collecting the cards again for nostalgia purposes, came into a bundle of C/UC's (about 12k) . Started thinking "hmm should start looking in to playing instead of just collecting" then started to look. Daunting is mild of a term and financially trying to keep up in the long run, perturbed me to say the least. The multiple formats is a tirade of confusion to me and your videos have really helped me understand and then enlighten me to a format I can actually start to break in to wow, just a big thank you to you for your work , i may be late getting into the whole scene but if it wasn't for your videos , i wouldn't be getting into it at all.

    Pauper is more exciting to home brew based on the size of your collection. I only started collecting again back in November and I feel I already have enough commons to make half a dozen really fun pauper decks. But if someone was collecting for a decade then by now they would have near endless possibilities in pauper.

  • @doorkeeperforlethal8015

    Circling back on this 7y/o video of Prof’s…
    I started playing magic when I was in middle school in the late 90’s to high school in the early 2000’s.
    I was gifted a ton of older cards by my older brother’s friends as hand-me-downs when they “caught” me and some of my friends playing at a picnic table at the community pool…
    Fast forward to today - I often find myself wandering off during the long drawn out turns of a game of EDH back to those poolside moments…
    How could I get back to that place? A return to my 90’s FILA basketball shorts, a ratty OG logo Cleveland Indians or Bmore Orioles T (also hand-me-down and 3 sizes too large) and my alpha and beta bolts? (Yes we’re reliving the hazy pipe dreams an old burn player).
    Well, I returned to magic some 7ish years ago (roughly when this video was published) and I was brought into EDH by some of the same old friends. Magic was back, the nostalgia was in full force… just missing the alpha/ beta/ unlimited cards I once owned and the vintage T’s I’d since outgrown and handed off to goodwill.
    I’ve been an active player in these past few years. But I’m finally returning to a format, a space, a tempo I once loved and what originally drew me to the game. A low cost/ low barrier to entry with a competitive edge - Pauper!
    To those of you returning to magic or experiencing it for the first time: don’t get obsessed with “power”. Don’t get pulled into thinking you have to play standard, modern, or shoot… even proxy legacy…. Challenge yourself in the craft of deck building [with only commons]!
    Prof, any kind of pauper meta update video would be greatly appreciated! Keep on keepin on!

    Pauper is a favorite of mine. My first and favorite deck is Domain Zoo. I have built to also be modern legal (mulldrifter in place of the brainstorms most lists run) so I get value out of running it in two formats, which is good because aside from a couple friends I don't know many people who have paper pauper decks. Also Domain Zoo can work ok in a modern meta because you can kill someone with two Tribal Flames after they have done half of the work for you with their fancy fetches and shocks ;)
    I also have a BW Nightsky Mimic deck and a Boros Landfall deck that I am currently tuning.

    i have been playing magic on and off for about ten years and stopped the last time due to Money involved in keeping up with the overpriced cookie cutter decks that dominated the meta where i play. I really like building my own decks and strategies, even if they suck, and really just want to play for the fun of it!
    i always knew about pauper but dismissed it as lame, but ever since i downloaded MTGO pauper feels like the best thing since sliced bread!
