I can’t stress how important a good cadence is. Especially during double time. Man I had a DS in 1999 that would get us all fired up. We had a 12 mile March and most of it was double time. He made it to where we didn’t think about how hurt we were, all the shin splints in our legs, the lack of sleep we had, we just kept going. After 9/11 I ran I to him again in Bagram, Afghanistan and was lucky enough fight next to him. He ended up dying from an IED in 2003 and every year on his death day I go to Green Bay and spend the weekend with his family because if it wasn’t for that man, I not only wouldn’t have made it through basic training, I wouldn’t have made it through my deployments, and I wouldn’t have made it through ranger school. If you have a good Drill Sergeant you will never forget them. Rest in Paradise Sgt. Kevin Hopkins
