- Watch the spectacle that was the 1958 Darlington Southern 500 won by legendary racer Fireball Roberts. Much of the race was ran with a large section of missing guardrail after Eddie Pagan crashed through it on lap 136 and tumbled off the track. Incredibly two more drivers would fly out of the track during the race.

Fireball was always my favorite driver. Hated to wear firesuit and hated fires, interesting that is the way he went, but his love of racing is the way he went. RIP Fireball. I am 77 and will always remember you.
Fireball was allergic to the fire-proofing chemicals used back then. He had a medical waiver because of his extreme allergic reaction to the liquid solution used. He was our hometown hero and we Daytonans will NEVER forget Edward Glen Roberts, our beloved driver…..
Oh my. The cars are real cars with chrome bumpers and they are huge. Awesome .
I first heard of this specific race in an old book about the best NASCAR drivers. It talked about Fireball Robert's 1958 domination and how Eddie Pagan went flying out of the track. Cool to see this race in color.
God bless you and youtube! The TV was boring me to tears, fired up the laptop and here I am! I love these old races!
This was a time when Stock Cars really looked like the cars you drove on the streets, not like today's Stock Cars. People could relate to the cars much better than today, despite the fantastic increases in speed.
Perfect timing to upload this video because Darlington is here!!!!
Awsome to see the pagentry parade at the week long pre race...also cool to see all old cars n trucks..
*1958 Darlington Stock Car Race. Just an awesome experience*
I passed by the track in 1974 and didn’t realize it until I looked to my left and I was right behind some stands. And those beauty queens still put today’s to shame, they are real. Could you what would happen if they put the flag of the south in the race show!
yes NASCAR committed suicide on june 10, 2020 banning that flag tradition.
Que estupendo poder vivir estos eventos ,es como viajar en el tiempo 🕧🕤🕓🧐
4:24 Bobby Myers Fatal Crash

Back when they were stock cars not like today, like they say all good things come to an end
NASCAR Cup cars stopped being stock in 1967. The transition from dirt tracks to long paved speedways demanded higher speeds and higher safety standards, and strictly stock cars could not do the job anymore. Still, it would be cool if the bodies were still stock looking, but the arrival of the Gen 4 in 1992 brought an end to that for marketing reasons.
At 4:15 , looks like me trying to make it to work in morning rush hour traffic in my late model Toyota Rav!
This made me laugh!!
This was the last Southern 500 before the Daytona speedway opened. This was the end of an era of sorts.
Super cool, really enjoyed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
I can't even imagine driving one of these cars for 500 miles at 115 miles per hour. I own a stock '56 Buick and I am not comfortable driving it much over 65 although it will do it. These guys are driving with basically a helmet, and a rudimentary roll cage. They are wearing shirts pants, and leather shoes. No real restraints of any kind but a lap belt.
I remember watching these early races on a black and white set when they still raced on the apron.
Don't mind the missing guard rail...just keep racing! If the walls or fense didn't hold up under a crash today they stop the race until fixed! These were some brave men back then unlike today...lol
It's incredible to think back to the days when guardrail was used, catch fences were barely there and the cars were basically street legal.
A wonderful film. 👏👏👏👏
This is awesome- a parade with clowns, a guy shooting a rifle, Confederate battle flag. Then a beauty pageant with James Arness judging, tobacco companies as sponsors, cars flying all over the place, starting on fire, flipping over... why did those 1950’s cars roll over so easily?
A very high center of gravity and almost no drag or downforce on the body to keep it on the ground they are going so fast.
They handled like bags of meat...and no power steering Awesome Bill from Dawsonville 35 years later more than doubled the speed of over 200 miles an hour.
That track looks like it has bad pitted acne
@@feellucky271what a nonsense. "High Center of gravity". Way better than todays cars. Back then, the engine was placed low behind the front axle. I race one of those on German streets, yes modded, but basically stock, since 1988 til today. I still smoke about any regular pass car on the road.
I love how they just going flying off the track though the guard rail
Very cool !
Love these classic races. Just get tired of the artificial sound effects of squealing tires and crashing cars.
It's amazing of the quality of video if this time..
America was such a nice country back then.
yes we Americans had free will to do cool stuff.
good days...
This was part of NASCAR’s “dark past” as Darian puts it.
yes NASCAR is gone
The rack and pinion show from way back is pretty cool too...them aughta be saggin and baggin by now@ 8:34
5:35 Hey Virginia's Governor Northam crashes the Parade!
Darlington hype, baby!
Are you still gonna post more full races?
Does anyone know the name of the narrator? This voice is all over tons and tons of highlight films of races from the 50's-70's but I've never heard a name mentioned.
His name was Bud Palmer
Lol it is NOT Bud Palmer.
Ralph Camargo was the announcer on this and many other classic NASCAR films.
@@robertstaley5049 Who was the other more southern voice you’d hear on race videos of this time? The one I’m thinking of did Southern 500’s from roughly 1965-1969.
Fireball roberts a true american bad ass . Chevys rule
How the Hell did anyone make it out alive anyway?
Luck, and the fact that these cars were going much slower than today. Surprises me how 40 cars can race on one track but make it out today.
@@Theel25 40 but ok i got what u mean lol
@@BRZkomarov There was around 70 cars back then, but I worded it wrong.
Who is this narrator? He did some of the Indy 500 films around that time frame.
I think it was Bud collins,, I know his first name is Bud.
58, first year of the BB chevy....wonder if they dominated?
Fireball won six races out of eight starts in the Chevy seen in this video.
How fast were they running?
#NASCAR you have forgotten where you come from, much like the rest of the United States.

А где все негры?

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰👍💛💛💛
11:51 Ross Chastain?
i road that track in 1958
Good old days, run what you brung as long they sold 500 cars to the public
Yep, this ain't template racing.
Stock cars 3 - Armco fence 0!
06:41 There's your good old southern manners for you.
when i turn on a modern rap video the performers are making the exact same mannerisms
@@patrickderp1044 That's because you're a racist POS.
😲
24:55 funny how announcer says after 4.5 hrs the race car is a year old...only 500 miles...amazing to see how we travel 10. To 15k a year or more now...
Non Stop at full throttle?
Hell yeah....thats how i drive
@@davidmc1489 so you live in Germany, or do you use only the 1rst gear?
4:24 pretty sure that driver died.
Yes, that's correct
It's a wonder all three of them didn't get killed. Man that was a bad collision.
The person who was killed was in the white car (Bobby Myers), but the other two, Fonty Flock and Paul Goldmisth survived
62 years later and they are still only turning left.....
actually this takes place after buddy bakers 1957 win at watkins glen, a tricky road course that is featured in NASCAR along with the sonoma road course, plenty of right turns happen at those races
It's not who can do it, it's who can do it the best. Anyone can throw a football, too.
Bruh this joke needs to die and replace it with follow the leader joke for F1
Don't want turn right on an oval track unless you're feeling a death wish.
i will restore this country to its former glory and i know i am not alone
Sorry to say it but, America is going down. Sodom and Gemorah.
How far racing and women have fallen.
Don't worry. People like you and the right-wing fascists you support are sending us back there. But I better be able to buy a car for $1500 if we're going back to the 1950's. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This is the oldest stock car ive ever seen
I remember when Fireball Roberts was killed. Me and my dads favorite driver. I had the pictures in my scrapbook. When he died Nascar came to a halt until new safety equipment could be created and utilized. The cars of that year were the last of the STOCK cars. They became race cars after his death. Greatest advance was the implementation of the fuel cell.
If I remember correctly the first race at AIR was in 1960. Were the Atlanta International Raceway paint schemes and coveralls just advertisement for the upcoming track? Please reply if anyone knows.
