    Thanks Gabriel... we should've been in Croatia in June, but we are still stuck in America, so, your videos bring to our living room one of the countries we really really love!
    At the end of this video you show the beautiful Gate to Zadar's old town, and just above it, a magnificent winged lion, symbol of St. Mark, the saint patron of Venice, rulers of this entire region back then... and I say magnificent only because of how well preserved... I know Croats didn't like it.
    I heard a story about a Japanese tourist who tried to sue her travel agent because the Organ in Zadar didn't play her favorite tune! Zadar is so beautiful, as all of Croatia is... I hope you keep going north and "discover" Pula and its impressing roman arena, one of the five largest built by the Romans, and also one of the best preserved ones.
    Enjoy Plitvice, I don't know if you can swim there now, the times I've been there it was not permitted... but knowing you don't like the crowds and also trying to keep yourself safe, it is high season, hopefully you can enjoy that amazing beauty. In your Sibenik video you mentioned something about escaping from the crowds... I'm sure you would enjoyed going up the Biokovo to the Sveti Jure peak... but now you are far from those mountains... if you keep on going north, inquire about going "truffle hunting" with dogs and guides.
    It is funny... when you are showing Zadar's Gate, there is mariachi music in the background, they're playing "El Son de la Negra", and it gets louder... were you going for a tequila shot instead of rakija ? ;)

      Zadar traces its origin to 9th-century BC which already in the 7th and 6th century BC. and it was an important center of the Illyrian tribe Liburni for which the port of Zadar was the starting point for numerous trade trips and a safe anchorage. The Liburnians were contemporaries of the Italic Etruscans and the Levantine Phoenicians. But the history goes further that that, the wider Zadar area has been inhabited since ancient times. The findings of this earlier culture date back to the Paleolithic, while in the Neolithic period archaeological excavations have identified numerous human settlements. On the outskirts of today's Zadar, such settlements were located in the area of Arbanasi and Puntamika. Before the settlement of the Illyrian tribes, this area was inhabited by the ancient Mediterranean people, from whose pre-Indo-European language the name of the settlement itself very probably originates - Jadera, Jadra or Jadr, which were later taken over by other civilizations what came to be. Greetings from sunny Zadar.

      The first time I went to Croatia, I was amazed at how many "Mexican" music videos there were on the local channels... that's how I discovered the GREAT and late Oliver Dragojevic, 2Cellos, Klapa Kase, etc... and then also Iearned about how Mexican music made it to Croatia, or actually, Yugoslavia during Tito's time, thru a movie in which they play "The Cucaracha", known as "Mama Juanita" there... Later I listened to Viktorija Novosel, singing a very very good "Paloma Negra", and also The Caballeros from Zagreb...
      I remember some funny music videos of "mexican music" with guys in donkeys, that also have a dear place in Croatia... but I also learned (by coincidence) about how you sing about the sea, love, history, etc. in a Klapa Kaše concert at the Franciscan monastery in Hvar, as they sang "Podiglo se malo četovanje" and "Zelena naranča". They explained the lyrics and how the franciscan museum there keeps the Zvir, or "The Beast", the figurehead of the St. Hieronimus, a local ship that participated in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571... just to think of a song that has existed for almost 500 years and still brings tears to the audience is incredible...
      And in my case, music is a great way to connect peoples!

    Gabriel, if you have a chance while in Plitvice Lakes, see if you can go to Rastoke (a village which is part of Slunj) just up the road towards Karlovac/Zagreb. It's 30 kms away from Plitvice.
    It's a beautiful part of Croatia...lots of water falls - Korana river that flows from the Plitvice lakes flows though Rastoke, and so does another river Slusnica/Slunjcica forming many beautiful falls.
    Food is considerably cheaper than on the coast, and just as good, if not better.

    Loving these videos. You do such a good job showing the cities and islands. Seeing as we cant travel from Australia at the moment this is so enjoyable and getting my list ready for when we can travel again. P.s I laughed outloud in your last video when you showed that little waterfall and said 'i thought it would be bigger' so funny....

    In 1880. Navy officer austrian Georg von Trapp was born in Zadar. His family story inspired world famous motion picture 'The Sound of Music'. Later, he received his education in Rijeka, and owned a villa in Pula, all in Croatia. The oldest two ot their children were born in Pula. Dalmatia and Istria back than were Crown lands in Habsburg Empire, directly under Austria (not Hungarian part).

    Only 2 days in Zadar is not enough! You should also check out Kornati islands National Park and the boat trip to Saharun Beach on Dugi Otok (Long Island) before heading for Plitvice lakes. Definitely worth it! Paklenica and Krka national parks are also easy day trips from there as well as Pag island. Zadar is where my family is from and I know it well, it's a travelling gem!

    The winged lion in the archway is the symbol of St. Mark, the patron of Venice. So when you see that along the Adriatic it usually means it was built during the Venetian Republic days.

      Holy sh!t, you're right. I hadn't noticed that, even though I watched the old video again. That's hilarious. It's a Chang beer shirt. I must have bought it when I was in Thailand the year before I filmed that other video, in 2016. I vaguely remember buying it in Chiang Mai.

      @hamburger-fries Před 4 lety +1

      @@GabrielTravelerVideos Wow so cool! Holy smokes....let that sink in for a moment. You are totally flowing with the river current and you are exactly where you are supposed to be right now. You followed your heart, left California, and went on your latest journey, and even when so many people tried to steer you off your track you kept following your heart. My theory is when life feels like a struggle it means you are swimming upstream, going against the river flow. To me that shirt represents the current or flow of the river and your journey.

    Don't use the Euronet ATM's. Use an ATM at a proper bank for a better exchange rate.
