- In this TJsRC episode, I'll Unbox and install the Redcat 16 LED Gen 8 light kit for the Scout ii. We'll look at what's in the box as well as installing each piece of the light kit on the chassis and body of the Gen 8. It's looks to be a decent light kit with some useful functionality. Be sure to comment and let us know if you run lights on your RC and if you do, do you actually run them at night to make full use of those lights. Also feel free to simply say hi and introduce yourself in the comments if you want. It's always fun meeting new people through the comments who enjoy the same great hobby of off-road scale RC.

Very interesting improvement.
The lights give the car a lot of realism. 👍🤙👍
AL RC Crawler Yes this definitely made the realism much better.
Just installed mine yesterday :) 👍
Awesome 👍
I don't drive my rc truck at night, but lights look cool!👌👍👍👍👍
I still haven't gotten around to actually doing any night running either. I do enjoy the added realism of the lights though. 👍
I like that the kit come with all you need,I have the old gen8 and want to put lights on it ,I have lights on my Jeep Rubicon, light bar included, I love driving it at night
James Swift I think the light buckets are the same between the original Gen 8 and the Axe edition so it should work. I still haven't done any night driving yet but now that both our main rigs have good lights I'm looking forward to trying it out.
Ordering the gen 8 v2 next week with the light kit. This is the best video I’ve found on the light install. Honestly love the positivity in yer voice that makes it seem even easier to install. Keep up the good work bud. Happy crawling!!
Thank you for the positive comment. I think you'll enjoy the Gen8. 👍
Ive really come to enjoy your hands on,keep em coming! Happy trails my man.
don anthony Thanks I appreciate the kind words. 👍
Great video
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it.
Great job. Looks sweet.
CryptoStang Thanks 👍
Very cool! I may buy the light kit too! Thks bro
RC Crawler Extreme You will love it. It adds such a nice touch of realism.
Great video! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it. 👍
Great vid TJ!
Thanks my friend. 👍
For anyone who doesn't want to remove the fender flairs to install the headlights just push down on the wheel well and the body will flex enough to give you space to install the lights. Sadly you'll still have to remove the light buckets for the taillights since they are in a bad spot
Richard Simpson That should work. 👍 Thanks for sharing the idea.
He**---🤨,I read this.
Very helpful! The best video I’ve seen on this.
Thanks my friend. Glad it was useful. 👍
Great video!!
Thanks 👍
GREAT HELPFUL VIDEO SIR. THANKS FOR POSTING
Glad it was helpful my friend.
THANK YOU SIR
👍
I would have attached the bottom rear bumper lights to the backup lights so they also come on in reverse instead of staying on. Or got red lights for the bumper. Because no one drives around with white lights on all the time in the rear. I don’t know why redcat did this. But your video on the install of the lights was probably the best I have found on CZcams.
I they were thinking from a purely off roading stand point where you would want good lighting all around but then why not include rock lights. It's still a pretty good kit though for the price. I like your idea for having the rear bumper light tied into the brake lights. Glad the video was useful my friend. 👍
Very good video ..!
Thank you very much!
cool man

Thanks, you too!

I got around to trying out your reverse light fix suggestion. It worked great. At first I “increased” the max reverse setting in the ESC & aside from me not being able to control reverse very well, it didn’t do anything for the function of the reverse lights. So, I went back to the ESC settings & lowered way down. I was very happy to see I had much better control in reverse, but it was great to see the reverse lights work at low throttle. Thanks again. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmas to you as well. I’m glad you got it working. 👍

Vaya a la configuración de su ESC y baje la potencia inversa al menos al 50%. De esta manera, se necesitarán más entradas del transmisor para ir en reversa y esto debería hacer que las luces de respaldo se enciendan antes.

I walk in the evening a lot and yes I take my crawlers out and blaze up the path with a light.
My lights are blue lol.
I have a gen 8 kit with axe parts.
Built it myself. 👊😀
RC Send And Blast Sounds fun. I have lights in all my rigs but I've yet to actually drive them in the dark 😂. I want to I just haven't gotten around to it.

My town just had its first covid cases. And is overrun in the hospital here. Night rides are crazy now. Might slow down for a while and see how it goes.
I only go out by myself now.

RC Send And Blast Yeah my wife and I usually just go by ourselves to.
Just bought the gen8 axe BEAST yesterday! It's a savage on the course after I boiled the stock foams anyways. I'm so glad I found your channel man I followed the hobby wing app step by step my tuning is close to the same as yours I just reduced my reverse a tad bit more than you. Anyways keep the great content coming.
I'm curious how the foams holding up? I tried the boiling method with ours and it wasn't very long before they were hard as rocks again so I just switched them out.
@@TJsRC actually I switched out to the milestar Patagonia’s with Pro-Line duel stage foams. I noticed the same thing w/mine. One thing I did want to tty about idk if you noticed but it takes a little more work to stretch the wheelbase than just those few screws in the frame rails. After doing that I notice there was a very hard angle in my rear lower driveshaft where it meets the rear axle creating a terrible hang up spot. Also my linkage and susp was off a little cause poor performance on the trail. I put it all back to stock form and climbed a 53° incline in my living room. I made a piece of plywood covered in carpet into a little test hill to determine incline capabilities and descending angles etc. needless to say I’m very happy after putting it back to stock and switching to 40 weight team losi oil all the way around. I’ve got some trealbrass up front and some other mods. I’m really happy with it.
@@comeandtakeit5709 If the upper and lower links are moved an equal amount the driveshaft angles should stay approximately the same as stock. For instance if you move the lower links to the furthest back mount hole in the skid plate you must also move the upper links mount for the rear axle to the furthest back mount hole on the skid plate.
I'm glad you have it preforming well now and that you are happy with it. Have fun trailing my friend. 👍👍
Your video is much better than the one from redcat. I had a really hard time just now installing mine - thank you for your video. The only thing is my reverse light is on at forward full throttle instead of at reverse, any thought on that?
Perhaps you mixed up a couple of the bulbs during installation and have the driving light switched with the backup light ? Is this on a Gen 8 AXE edition or the original Gen 8?
Actually, I had to remove the K4 jumper for some reason. I found it from the Redcat Official video, somebody else had the same problem. Btw, I love the tire chain in your truck, I never knew they had that available!
@@dretech Thanks for the suggestion. I had no reverse lights at all and removing the K4 jumper fixed it.
@@davidbasch9704 I finished the install earlier today. I was pretty disappointed not having the reverse lights working. I am going to give a try removing the K4 jumper. I am not sure how that is done & I am not up to it tonight. Tomorrow is another day.
Where can I get the badass mountain livery that’s on it?!? Sooooo epic btw!!!
I found it on eBay. Just search "Gen 8 decals" the picture on eBay shows them in gold on a white scout but the listing that I bought from let you pick alternate colors such as the white that I have. And yeah it looks really good. There are lots of different designs you can go with as you'll see when you search. Good luck my friend. 👍
Put the same light kit in my Axe, is the controller safe at 7.4v? doesn't say anything on the box and couldn't get an answer out of RedCat so turned the BEC down to 6.0v just in case. When installing it was wondering why the plug into channel 1? turn signals?, also didn't like the white lights in the rear bumper just seemed a bit random lol, so put some spotlights on the front bumper and stuck the rear bumper LED's in them but for the money (half the price of the Tra$$xxas light kit, although the Traxxas light kit seems brighter to me) they seems really good although don't trust there "waterproof" claim so looking for a small plastic box to put the controller into
Anyway sorry for the rambling...bored today lol..thanks for vid...another good one
AL Can't say for certain if it's rated for it or not but I'm running mine at 7.4 so we'll see if they work long term that way. I used both channels because I would like to get the side marker lights set up eventually. If you are worried about the water proofing you can disassemble the plastic cover off the control box and put a new layer of conformal coating on it.
Very helpful! I installed as instructed in this vid. But my reverse lights are on when going forward and off when reverse. Any thoughts?
Jumper K4 is probably the culprit. If it’s in remove it. If it’s not then add it back.
@@TJsRC I removed 3 and 4 and it fixed it. Thanks.
@@aknmtbr great. Have fun wheeling it around.
Thank you for the video. Is the control box waterproof?
Nelson Mercado yes it is but if you want to be extra sure you can coat it with some conformal coating to make it more water proof. In case you are suspicious of the Quality Control from the factory.
Alot of RC related electronics claim to be "waterproof" however in my experience, I have killed numerous "waterproof" parts submarining my rig.
Someone should inform these companies there is a difference between WATERPROOF and water RESISTANT
I've got a light bar already on mine, will that make things more difficult? Nice video.
It depends on how you have it powered. If you are powering it off a source that is needed for the light kit you will have to add an extra splitter so they can all get the power they need.
@@TJsRC thank you!
Do you have any ideas on how I could go about adding the turn signal LED’s? I found some nice yellow LEDs I’d like to use, but I’ve searched for buckets & lenses & had no luck.
It's not something I've tried yet. I would suggest getting on a Gen 8 Facebook group and asking there. It's possible you may be able to adapt signal light buckets from a different kit (maybe a TRX4 bronco or blazer) but unless you find someone who has done it already it would be trial and error to find ones that fit nicely enough. That's why I'd start by asking around on the FB groups. There are an endless number of groups to check not just redcat gen 8 groups but any custom RC build groups.
Thanks. I don’t have Facebook, but I will keep looking around.
Great video. Couldn’t have done it w/out you! Everything went as it should & I followed your tips regarding removals to make it all easier. The problem I do have though is the reverse lights don’t come on at all. I don’t think I did anything wrong, but that’s certainly a possibility. I see from the past comments others have had reverse light issues, but i have no idea what “check the jumper” could possibly mean & “signal was reversed on the light controller” scares the heck out of me. Then there is removing the K4 jumper??? I am embarrassed, what’s that? I manage to follow directions, but troubleshooting electronics is way beyond me.
There should be a small control box that all the light wires plug into. On that box there are some moveable little switches (jumpers, labeled K2, K3 & K4) each one can be left in place or removed to change a setting. If you have the install paper that came in the box it should describe what each one controlls as well as what removing each "jumper" does. If you lost the install sheet you should be able to find it on this page under "downloads"
www.redcatracing.com/products/rer11650?variant=30993855610970
@@TJsRC I grabbed the install paper. I looked at the diagram & chart. They dealt w/ brake lights (I am interested in making that change) & steering??? Nothing dealing w/ reverse lights.
I do appreciate the response. Thank you. I’ll keep trying to figure it out.
I figured out what a jumper was...As you suggested, I removed K4. The instructions in the kit aren’t very precise. The labeling & description on the instruction sheet didn’t show K4 had anything to do w/ backup lights. I am still disappointed the backup lights are not activated at slow speeds.
While I was at it, I removed K2. That has brake lights on a @ 50% while in motion & full brightness when stopped.
All in all, it’s nice to have all those lights, but I would think there could be more options available. I watched one video showing turning signals. I know the kit is capable of this option. I have no idea how to do it on my own.
Thanks again. Happy Holidays!
@@josephmorelli3191 I agree, the instructions are extremely lacking. And you are right it's odd that they would sell a control unit that can do blinkers but not include them. As far as I know they don't sell then separately either so you have to add them DIY style. It would have been so easy for them to add that or at least offer it as an add on to the kit. You said the back up lights don't come on at slow speeds. Do they come on at full reverse? On mine the backup lights don't trigger until more than 50% of reverse throttle is applied. Is this your case as well or do they simply not come on at all?
@@TJsRC Sorry I wasn’t clear. The reverse lights do come on, but not at low throttle. That’s annoying, in general one doesn’t travel a high speeds in reverse. All in all it’s a nice upgrade, but it certainly could be much better. Thanks again!
Hey man I'm new to the RC world and purchased a RedCat gen8 scoutt 2 and having a lot of fun. Do you mind sending me the link to purchase this kit please.
They seem to be sold out in a lot of places. Try looking for the part number RER11650 on ebay maybe. Or just google it and see if you can find an online RC store that has it. When I checked on eBay today (7-19-2020) there were a few available. Hope you find it. You will really like how much it improves the realism look of the rig. 👍👍
Красив!!!!👍😉🇷🇺🤘
Thanks 👍
I know this video was several years ago, but I just the scout and installed the light kit. All the lights work except the reverse lights. I see a lot of people changing the ESC settings, the manual is not very clear on how to adjust the reverse power. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
The reverse light never comes on or only comes on when you are full throttle reverse?
@@TJsRC I got it working! I had to remove all but the 1st jumper. Thanks for your video though it was helpful!
@@huntershumaker8067 glad you got it figured out. Persistence is often all you need. 👍
Can you control the lights with the transmitter? Like on and off etc.
Unfortunately no. This kit doesn't have that. You would have to get a separate aux channel switch and install it inline with this light kits power box then you would be able to use a channel on your controller to turn them on and off.
Hi there friends,
James from Scotland 🏴
Here,
I'm just getting in to RC crawlering, my first time rc's 👍🙂
Dose the light kit come with screws in it??,.
Where would get the screws?? & what size are they??
Kind regards
James 😊
James Jack The screws and the LED light clips actually come in the spare parts bag with the truck so hopefully you still have that laying around. If not you can probably get that from redcat. Otherwise email redcat support and ask them what sizes are needed so you can find some. I don't know exactly what the tiny screw sizes are called. One other option would be to go to your local hobby shop with one of the light buckets to see if they have anything that would work. I hope that helps.
Rong Screw but they work better i striped 2 of the long ones wich r the right ones
Yeah the tiny screws can be a pain. Other than that did the rest of it install ok?
First try removing the "K4" jumper on the light controller. If that doesn't work for you Try reversing the rotation of the motor on the ESC and then also reversing the throttle on the radio. That has worked for a few others who had the same problem.
@@TJsRC merci beaucoup! Ça fonctionne 😊👍

Do you know about LEDs and wiring I'm looking to see if I can replace the headlights and the rear bumper lights with different LED colors
Don’t have any experience with that. I would just try Google to see if different color LEDs need different voltages or amps. There may even be such a thing as Color LEDs that have the extra stuff built in so you can just swap them in. I don’t actually know sorry. Sounds like an interesting project though. Good luck getting it figured out and working.
@@TJsRC thanks that makes sound sense. I'm going to order some LEDs and just experiment can't hurt it. Just getting into crawling haven't even used the car yet. Your videos I really informative good work
Reverse lights only come on when it goes to full power brake lights work the bottom tail light stays on when you’re crawling how do I get the reverse light to show when you’re gone reverse not full speed
Try going into the ESC settings and lowering maximum reverse power way down. It won’t go full speed in reverse anymore (but who really needs that in a crawler anyway) but the transmitter should reach the threshold for turning the brake lights on much sooner so you should see them long before you are flying backwards.
Where did you order this light set?
it was a while ago but I think I got mine off Redcat’s website. Do a search for “RER11650” on your favorite RC parts website as many places have it. Even Amazon has it.

MY reverse lights come on when i move forward... but only after some speed.. any idea how to solve it? thanks
B Belmar The install or user manual should have directions so you can check the jumper that controls the break light. Make sure it's set to the position you want.
@@TJsRC The user manual only refers to steering and behavior of the braking lights... but nothing on the reverse light. It seemed the signal was being received reversed on the light controller so I ended up reversing the rotation of the motor on the ESC and the throttle on the radio and that fixed it. ( Im using the AXE)
B Belmar I guess as long as that works you should be good. Obviously something was crossed or wired incorrectly. Perhaps it was in the light controller.
@@TJsRC mines do the same how exactly did you fix for them to come on on reverse?
@@edwinalvarado101 If the backup lights come on while going forwards you could try reversing motor rotation in the ESC settings and then also reversing the throttle control on the transmitter.
While you are in the ESC settings reduce maximum reverse speed to 25-30% that way when you do backup it's more controllable and the backup lights should come on sooner.
If anyone has an issue with the brake lights not working I have the fix that is not out there online anywhere,.
What is your Solution my friend?
@@TJsRCtrim
How do you like that red cat axe edition?
We are very happy with it. We have quite a lot of trailing and crawling miles on it and have yet to break anything. My wife runs it most of the time and she feels that the axe system makes it much easier for her to control the truck through obstacles. The built in full interior ups the realism making it even more fun to watch on the trail. The only complaint I have is the steering geometry. There's considerable bump steer but I've got the suspension dialed in to a point that minimizes it so it doesn't interfere with how my wife drives it. Overall it's a fun truck that we enjoy having.
@@TJsRC nice! Good to hear, also, where did you buy the light kit?
@@TJsRC btw, I really like your vids and how you explain things. Happy crawling.

I got my Redcat from someone else. How do I go about getting the clips to hold the lights?
I would Check Redcats website, see if they’re in the replacement parts section for the Axe. If not message their support. Tell them what you need and see if they can help you out that way. I believe that the clips are in an accessory bag with the body kit so I’m not sure how to find them other than what I just mentioned. If that doesn’t work for you an alternative would be to carefully shoe goo the LEDs in place at each spot. It would be slow but it would work.
