    Back in the day when I was DJ'ing at clubs in the late 90's early 00's, DJ's were getting paid $150-$200 for an hour set and you would have to hunt down the promoter all night so you could get your money.

      Nothing, producers DJ because that’s how they make money and it goes for the big mainstream artists too (Beyoncé, Drake, Travis Scott, Tiësto, Martin Garrix etc) it’s not just about making music now to make money sure you can get SOME money but if you want a good amount of money you sell music

    • @duboi1475
      @duboi1475 Před 5 lety +7

      Firepluto be a ghost producer for a DJ... Most labels are buying tracks from producers on contract ... say $400 for a track meeting certain criteria... the artist is forgoing the royalties in order to be released on said label .. that label then promotes their song and pushes it to sales to recoupe their fee... the producer then books gigs "djing" based off their tracks popularity.
      If you prefer not performing team up with a local or distant DJ .. have him be the face and you the music and you split the $ earned from bookings ... Works for stanton warriors

    I'm singing and playing the guitar in a cover band, we have combined the bands gigs with me as the DJ at weddings and other private parties a few times. We play the pop/rock songs with the band, after we finish I go to the DJ booth and plays electronic music for an extra hour. Works pretty good, I'm doing it aprox 4 times every summer but I played as a DJ every weekend 20 years ago. Then it was vinyl, now it's USB and other songs! That's the biggest difference. 😀

    I’m thinking about to DJ again. My last (paid) gig is over 10 years ago... I’m more comfortable in the studio making music, playing instruments and working on sound design. I know it earns me less money but that’s not my goal. I do what I like and even my main genre is quite niche at the moment (mainly Trance) But nevertheless I like it to DJ once in a while so I’m considering to buy myself a capable DJ set to get in to it (again)

    Dear Jon, could you please make a vid about:
    1) the defenision of track, single and an album.
    2) putting your song/mix etc online, like different platforms. What is the best platforms, because I read that some platforns get the copyright when you upload your 'art' on their platform.
    3) how do the radio stations get your song and is it true that you don't earn money from it?
    4) could you share your experience about collabs, like: how do you approach the artists and how does the copyright work in this case?
    I hope you can make a vid about these subjects, because you have a lot experience.
    I hope we can collab in the future. Fly out

    One thing I noticed... I am a DJ and I got payed on my second gig and I made 100 dollars. This may be a rare but I found because I have gear,lights and my own speakers. So I now charge 200-300 for about 2-5 hours to come to partys and venues like music events.. I open for artists in my city to hype up the crowd before they come out and I also get some events where I just DJ but I huge tip I would give to people starting out is invest what you make to create a brand/name for yourself

    • @XFAiDERse
      @XFAiDERse Před 5 lety

      Absolutely! That back-end is and has always been critical! Also, in other industries, they do the same thing - so I don't see ghost-producing as something "shocking" or "bad". Sometimes, it just makes sense to do it, so, why not? As a car guy, I oftenly compare the music-industry to the automotive-industry & motorsport, there are so many similarities. For example, one manufacturer build their cars from, practically, nose to tail all under one roof (and can't imagine working with subcontractors) - while others put the car together with parts & services from subcontractors and believes that it's the best way to get the act together (Audi's LMP1 programme in WorldEnduranceChampionship, before they had to leave due to cost-cutting measures).
      Everyone can have an opinion on which is better - but the car that crosses the finish-line first wins -regardless!

    • @MattVorn
      @MattVorn Před 5 lety

      Of course there's exceptions, however any DJ that is touring a lot and also claims to be a producer most likely relies on ghost producers to finish their ideas. Usually within the world of ghost production, you may find that guys like Tiesto would come up with an initial idea and then he'd have guys simply finish the idea. Then every other track, he probably wouldn't even be the one conceptualising the track.@@treamx3659

    • @MattVorn
      @MattVorn Před 5 lety +6

      The thing is, don't confuse ghost production with co-production. As a producer your job is to oversee the production, by definition a producer shouldn't be composing, arranging mixing etc... Avicii had full control in those studio sessions, he just used the best musicians he could find to give his ideas the best shot.

      @@harryh3203 depends on the Club. Smaller Bar and Club with 50-100 guests don't have a big gear like CDJs or a DJMs mixers. The just have the Soundsystem with the maybe a small mixer or you have to go direct to the Amp. So you have to bring your gear. Also little bigger Clubs where you play as a NoName DJ it doesn't care the owner what gear you use. The music and sound quality must be good and you must catch the crowed.
      In smaller clubs the midi controllers are no problem because of quality, because the don't have +100.000$ Soundsystem.
      But i prefer to play with the club gear, then i don't have to carry so much. USB drive or Laptop and Headphones thats it. ;-)

      @@muratti72muc I noticed that in the Traktor S series stuff info they mention their soundcards are big club quality. Plenty of the bigger techno artists use midi controllers in conjunction with higher end mixers (Richie Hawtin, Rebekah). Like you said it seems to be the audio interface thats the critical part, just unfortunate alot of the smaller midi controllers do not have good quality soundcards.

      maybe get a well connected manager? or “network” with other DJs in your area. eventually you’ll find a connection to a local club and start from there.

    Well yeah but Guetta couldn't even properly spin a record, that or just too lazy, idk, but he just faked it a lot of the times. I've seen most big names from like ten fifteen years ago at least once, Van Dyk I saw three times over up-close, Väth, Tiësto, Van Buuren, Daft Punk, Prodigy (RIP Keith :( ), ... ... ...
    Guetta was the only one I ever caught literally faking his performance. I would've known cause I was a dj myself back then...
    I've heard about a few others back in the day that were being accused of it, but him I saw myself. He saw me looking at him like 'wtf' too, right after he kind of saved his moves...
    Too late though.
    Mind this was like ten years ago, so perhaps along the way he did learn, must have...

      depends what kind of gig. I don't have a playlist but i know my songs and cue points, also i have loops, effects and other features. Some of the older DJ like Carl Cox, Sven Väth, Hawtin, etc. also have no finish Set. They know there songs and have maybe a folder with 300-400 songs he picked before and he plays then 100 songs in 5 hours.
      It's super boring when you play always the same Set like Guetta, Aoki, Marshmello, Romero, Garrix, R.Schulz, etc.
      When they play at this big shows like Tomorrowland the have a finish Mix and press only at start at the beginning. Then they act a little and play a little with the effects. ;-) This mixes makes a employee DJ of Guetta, Aoki, Garrix, etc. for them.
