Great content Michelle, yes I quit my as an RN last years after almost 17 years in the field. It was not an easy decision, but life is too short to dread going to work everyday. This was very refreshing. I love to hear and see other pharmacist making efforts to take charge of their career and not settle for the toxic environments that the retail space as created and forced on us as professionals. I especially like your description of the inhumane expectations thrusted upon us working without lunch, water, or sometimes bathroom breaks. These big box chains are simply factories and they put such a stressful strain on us that even our patients are under the assumption that it is absurd that the pharmacy should be closed for lunch. I've owned my own store for 13 years and have been out of the loop as far as the job market is concerned. My stores where heavily patient care based providing diabetes training, free delivery, compliance services and so much more. Insurance payments decreased and breaking even wasn't even happening anymore. So I recently sold my stores and was in a predicament where I needed a job and had no choice but to accept one of these retail positions. I was traumatized from the experience. I, like you only lasted 3 months. Every night I came home applying for a WFH opportunity. I finally was selected for a great opportunity and I'm hoping that my experience will be enjoyable. Thank you for sharing your experience it has helped me to prepare for what I should expect in my new position. Sorry for long message but you really inspired me. Good luck in your future endeavors please continue to share!

Congrats to you Michelle ! For being strong and bold enough to realize a bad situation and leave early. I bounced around and was mistreated by retail after retail pharmacy for 6 years and I will never EVER go back. In nevada we waive our rights. Would work 12-14 hour shifts sometimes longer as a manager and wouldn't have time to eat or drink or go to the bathroom doing 400-500 scripts a day with 3 techs and 1 pharmacist. I would eat 2 snickers and 2 mountain dews; per shift. Which of course the company accused me of stealing, twice. Why would I steal a dollar drink when I am the manager and making X amount. My physical health went to shift. Knee and foot pains from standing for 12-14 hours with no chair. Constant stress and harassments from patients who had no idea how much work I had or what I had to do. Worked 5 to 10 hours extra each week being a manager having to work after my shift. If I could go back I would file a lawsuit against every one of these companies. Lawyers tell me it's illegal what they are doing about waiving lunches. I still have mild ptsd from it and anxiety stress attacks and hard to cope in normal jobs because I feel like I need to be doing more and not able to relax.

I am happy & glad that the younger graduates have the courage and are getting out when they can. Even though the chains are stating that things are better they are not. I lasted 10 months and I should've jumped the ship long before that. I was ready to give up pharmacy altogether but thank god I found my current job. Thinking back, I was sinking into depression. At the end of the 10 months I was crying every week and broke down over the tiniest things. When they rolled out the 30-minute lunch break thing, my friends and I (P4s at the time I believe) were celebrating like it was a privilege LOL ridiculous.

Congrats Michelle! My Pharm life history is similar to yours! I lasted 3 years in retail (only because it wasn’t a big chain) and then did long term care (don’t work with the public but still dispensing) and that was quite similar to retail. Losing my job right at the beginning of the pandemic was the greatest thing ever as it set me up to get the most miraculous referral into consulting which I can mostly WFH. I absolutely love it since it is still patient care, but with a cat curled up beside me and I Love Radio coming out of my cell phone speakers. It also allowed me to help on the front lines in late 2020 and early 2021 with Covid to keep my social skills in tact 😅 if I get my way, god willing, I will never step back into a pharmacy unless I’m dropping off a script! Especially since I can work from anywhere in the world--

Wow, my path to pharmacy school was almost identical. Prior to pharmacy, I had a bachelor's and master's in the social sciences. My first major job after grad school was in marketing research but after 6 months there I was fired because I wasn't meeting their expectations. Before jumping into a different career, I wanted to take some time to consider my options and visited my sister out of town for moral support. While I was there I began applying for some temp jobs. My sister was shocked and said that I was selling myself short. Long story slightly less long, she suggested pharmacy because of the good pay, opportunities, sign on bonuses (my sister had an early 2000s idea of what the pharmacy profession was like). But I just ran with it. Over time, I developed my interest in the hard sciences and have grown to really like pharmacy. I'm near the finish line and can't wait to be done, but I have this feeling of emptiness because i started this journey in an avolitional state and remain in a mental fog.

If someone does NOT like that then they can go ____ OFF! Not everyone can do that as they need their jobs but if one saves their money from a young age then they can quit, go somewhere else or just early retirement. I am on indeed, glassdoor, and linkedin a lot; I would say so far linkedin seems the most informative and well organized. I've been applying to about 20 jobs per week, and feeling discouraged, but compared to 100, 20 doesn't seem like a lot! @@michellejy thanks your story inspired me so much I recently got a job offer for prn with a company that offers work from home opportunities however the department is different and the line of work is different. I am not sure if the risk is worth it but I am not getting luck anywhere else momentarily.

could you work your full time job and also PRN on the side? that way you don't have to take such a large risk of quitting your full time job? that could be a tactic to try it out, get your feet wet, and then hopefully jump into a full time position if it opens up!?

Calculus is really difficult! Wow that is a lot of years! I really respect pharmacy technicians. Pharmacies cannot function without you.

The crazy part for me is I left law enforcement to do this. And the fact that a lunch break is supposed to be an incentive sound like the same environment. 🤣🤣🤣 But here we are getting thru it. Im sure the job I want will come along that let's me have freedom and a lunch break.

As a Pharmacy Technician, I would think that this job would be much more smoother than nursing. I heard many horror stories about nursing. I just hope if you do nursing, it's not true on what I've heard about it.

Nursing is not so great either… especially if you work in the hospital. In a clinic it’s a lot better.

You can do pharmacy but make sure you look towards multiple pathways (like clinical, industry, PBM, etc), not just retail. Also work in retail as a tech/intern throughout pharmacy school.

Maybe because just like school, they don’t actually teach you what happens in the real world. They just talk about how much money you make.

    • @oulani

You got to understand that school literally just show you what you need to do as a Pharmacist. They do not show the parts of the retail pharmacy that can get hectic at times.

retail pharmacy has gone down the drain it’s not the same 10-20 years ago. It even affects your physical and mental health. Independent pharmacy is better than chain Pharmacy’s
