    it still baffles me how this team managed to get relegated, some of the football we played here was breathtaking, even with the 3 deducted points we shouldn't of been anywhere near the bottom 3, if had survived then who knows what we could of achieved, juninho stays for a starter.

      People don't actually realise we could have been the 'original' Chelsea if you will but with an English owner. Nobody was paying wages like us, we blew teams away in transfer negotiations with the amount of money we had. We were the first team in the league to pay a player 30 grand a week, so we started the wage increases 🤣 We wanted the title, that was our aim, we had Batistuta, Roberto Carlos practically agreed had we stayed up etc we could have been unreal.

      We couldn't defend to save our lives, I mean we still had Steve Vickers playing in central defence lol!

      We signed Schwarzer and Festa too late, had they started the season we'd have been fine regardless of the points deduction, defence was awful whenever Pearson was out.

    A lot of people make too big a deal about ManUtd's winning points tally that season (75) it's the 44 goals conceded that's a bit more surprising for a team who wins the PL.
    Quite a lot of teams have finished 2nd with 74pts or less so it wasn't necessarily a weaker season if anything it was more competitive and NottForest who finished bottom were still unbeaten in 22 of their 38 games.
    There were better teams in the bottom half then. Middlesbrough another example. CL winners etc...in their team and they got to 2 cup finals that year and only got relegated due to points deduction they actually would've finished 14th if it weren't for that, a difference of 5 places because it was so tight a more balanced league, many draws for most teams and even at the top Newcastle, Arsenal & Liverpool all on 68pts each (again 68pts for 4th nowhere near the lowest in PL history).

    What led Juninho to play in English football was the goal he scored for Brazil against England in the final of the Umbro Cup 1995, where Brazil was crowned champion by beating England 3-1

    What amazes me about this so called 'golden era' for United is just how poor they seem defensively compared to today's standards. It's like watching a completely sport how much the game has evolved.

      Fitness wise plays an important part too. Todays players would run rings against the teams back then.

      @jimmymichael7901 Před 3 lety +1

      The game has changed not evolved. Whereas today’s teams are “fitter” - so many players aren’t technical and have no touch. You can’t run faster than the ball, these teams of yester year combined the best home grown players with some of the most fantastic players from abroad but they were all footballers first and foremost. Don’t be fooled into thinking everything newer is better.

    • @sseedell
      @sseedell Před 3 lety

      @@jimmymichael7901 Changing is evolving, I'm not really sure what your point is apart from agreeing with me. The game has evolved in many ways (medical science, tactics, attacking style, pace etc etc). This doesn't mean that the players of yesteryear couldn't compete in the modern game if they were born in a different era, just that the era they were born in played to a different standard of the game with strengths concentrated in different areas.

    • @jimmymichael7901
      @jimmymichael7901 Před 3 lety

      @@sseedell change is not the same as evolve. Evolution is directional and implies an advancement- eg. It’s getting better. Your comment and the first reply implies that because of modern sport science, and fitness - the game is better for it.
      Also, you’re obviously not old enough to have seen these teams at the time to be able to compare over the course of say a season- the football standards. This is highlights from a particularly dodgy defensive performance.
      Last week Liverpool lost 7-2 - is that what you’d call “today’s standards?”

    • @sseedell
      @sseedell Před 3 lety

      @@jimmymichael7901 I was born in the 70s so I'm perfectly old enough to have seen the transition in style and play since then. I'm not really sure of the relevance of Liverpool losing 7-2, freak results happen in any era. The worst beating I can recall in the highest league was Man U v Ipswich (9-0) in the 90s. So by your logic the game must have improved since 'yesterday's standards'...

      People said that (like they did with Southampton) but really over the course of many seasons in various meetings in league & cups every team will get wins & at least pts against you I know ManUtd were the best vs teams they're expected to beat hence why they won so many PL's but law of averages say you'll lose eventually especially with some of the players Middlesbrough always seemed to have even seasons they were near the bottom. I get that with Boro in PL there were more wins/pts at OldTrafford than many other teams would get plus I recall Southampton beating ManUtd in games that were very important for Soton but not for ManUtd which contributed to Southampton having perhaps a better PL record than people at the time would've thought they'd have but they still had a bad record at OldTrafford....only a few teams I can think of straightaway that had quite a few years in the PL with an awful home&away record vs ManUtd like Wigan & Stoke there's probably other teams but ManUtd didn't really have a bad record vs Boro.
      1992/93 Draw away and a 3-0 home win at OldTrafford
      1995/96 ManUtd won 2-0 & 0-3
      1996/97 ManUtd didn't lose to them
      1998/99 Middlesbrough won 1 and ManUtd won 1 (ManUtd also beat Boro at OT in FAcup)
      1999/00 ManUtd won home&away
      2000/01 ManUtd won home&away
      Between 2001/02 to 2003/04 in PL ManUtd 3 wins Middlesbrough 3 wins, Boro won at the Riverside in FAcup game in 02
      2004/05 ManUtd drew and won (and beat Boro in FAcup at OT)
      2005/06 The first time Boro took more pts in head-to-heads with a win & draw against ManUtd
      2006/07 ManUtd won & drew (plus ManUtd drew away in FAcup and won the replay at OT)
      2007/08 ManUtd won home & drew away
      2008/09 ManUtd won home&away
      Boro were relegated again they came back up a while after this briefly I can't be bothered to go into that period and I'm sure you weren't referring to that period anyway. But as you can see Middlesbrough never even did the double over ManUtd which even Blackburn 05/06, WestHam 06/07, ManCity 07/08 (before the money) etc... have done.
