  • The Arlo Video Doorbell is a new take on the video doorbell, opting for a square image, smart features, and AI object detection. The only thing missing for Apple users, is HomeKit support.

    I've got Arlo Cameras and Ring Doorbells. The Arlo cameras work well and I like their interface. I just replaced one of my Ring's with with the Arlo doorbell because after 2 years, Ring decided to not work on my wifi network anymore (including a brand new unit). For me live view and live conversation on both don't work well. For Ring, someone rings the doorbell, I hit it, and it spins for 2 minutes before connecting (even if I'm in the house on the same network). The Arlo doorbell does the same thing, it takes forever to connect, so even though I like the doorbell, the live connection sucks. The fact that Arlo doesn't default to live video actually sucks. For me, I don't get the notification fast enough to know who is at the door before I'm trying to connect, so it's not great having audio only, then talk, then get the image of the person a minute or two later. It's not as clean as this review makes it out to be. I've got 200Mb service with pro-grade wifi (Ruckus). Still looking for a doorbell which will actually connect to live-view fast enough to talk to the person at the door.

    Can this unit be mounted horizontally, rather than vertically?
    Currently, have 4 of the original Arlo security cameras and wondering if this device uses that router?
    The Ring system I have now is rather poor (resolution and connection thru the net). I done with Ring.
    Thanks for the review.

      @MrGaborseres Před 4 lety

      Wiring is not as hard as you may think.... Of course you need to be just a bit handy.... So across, the wall from your doorbell location find an electrical source that is always on... Install your little power supply well concealed and drill trough the wall and run a wire to your new doorbell.... CZcams is full of information such is this.....good luck 🤞

      you automatically get the free recordings for 3 months. After that if you want them to continue to record then you pay for the subscription. If you don't pay, the video doorbell will still work you just won't be able to see the video unless you have it on live.

    😎 There is not a GOOD video doorbell that works well on Homekit AND looks as good as the Nest Hello does. I tried the Logitech Circle View doorbell, but it was horrible on overheating, intermittently turning off all the time, and it's camera view range is not good at all. Have you found another solution you prefer that works with Homekit? Nest Hello is my only non-Homekit smart home product I still use, but I have the Starling Hub to put it on Homekit. Is this Arlo Doorbell worth it now?

    You didn’t cover how the security is better than Ring (other than just saying “if you want to avoid the security issues with Ring). What is Arlo doing to address this?

    • @AppleInsider
      @AppleInsider  Před 4 lety +2

      Arlo has been quicker to connect, more reliable, has more “smart features,” better square aspect ratio, has HDR video, better integration into iOS such as PhoneKit, and more likely to gain HomeKit.
      As far as the other issues, they haven’t had any of the security and privacy issues Ring has. Look at our coverage:
      iphone.appleinsider.com/articles/20/01/28/rings-app-caught-spying-on-users-sharing-data-with-third-parties
      iphone.appleinsider.com/articles/19/08/06/ring-doorbell-video-is-supplied-to-police-without-homeowners-permission
      iphone.appleinsider.com/articles/19/01/10/ring-camera-support-teams-may-have-access-to-all-video-recorded-by-users
      These things aren’t issues with Arlo.

    • @AppleInsider
      @AppleInsider  Před 4 lety +2

      Well not much can help shady tactics of allowing employees access to videos or secretly selling user data.
      Arlo says the only people who have access to your video are those that have the username and password - i.e. you or your family. They also use AES-128 bit encryption and Transport Layer Security (TLS) to secure your videos.

    I strongly disagree with your review! I purchased the Arlo Video Doorbell to provide additional surveillance with my existing (4) - Arlo Pro 2 security cameras. With having the Arlo Base Station in place, adding the video doorbell was a 'no brainer'. The overall setup was quick and easy and I was excited to finally add the doorbell to my security system. Well, to put it simply, I was extremely disappointed with the devices overall performance. Firstly, repetitive motion triggered events by cars passing by the house were a major nuisance. I tried decreasing the device sensitivity, but, didn't seem to help. Secondly, most of the captured motion events would last ONLY 3 to 5 seconds max and wasn't enough time to witness a complete event. Lastly, the Arlo Doorbell video quality was super disappointing! My Arlo Pro 2 cameras provide much sharper, clearer video quality compared to this video doorbell. I have since returned the Arlo Video Doorbell and plan to purchase a Ring product instead.

    Arlo Security equipment is crap. I have 3 cameras, 1 video doorbell and 2 chimes. I wish I had every penny back that I have spent. Their customer service is less than acceptable. According to them you must turn off any VPN for the system to work. It is all subject to fail at any given time. Battery life is less than expected. I unequivocally will NOT spend any more money on Arlo crap.

  • @nathans1435
    @nathans1435 Před 3 lety +1

    This is a useless system.
    Don’t buy it, you end up losing money because their products are not backward compatible and stupid.
    I bought the base station only 16 months ago. But I didn't know their latest Arlo Video Doorbell wasn't backward compatible with my base station. What is the point of buying their systems if they don't last more than 2 years. Also their support staffs are rude and arrogant.
    I can list so many issues with this product.
    For example, voltage range of the transformer is targeting only US standards but they sell the same product in other countries where the voltage specifications are not similar to US. For example, if you buy this in Europe you need to get a different transformer. And they say it comes with a transformer but not every seller gives you transformer. For example if you buy this in Australia then you get nothing.
    Not only that video call drops off in the mid of the conversation. Also the camera is so stupid because they don't have lot of features to control the sensor. The list goes on and on. They are trying to sell the quality of the video but most of the other brands provide the same result when it comes to video quality. There are lot of good products in the market and they are lot smarted and better than Arlo.

    This is a terrible product, I purchased it from costco the other day and spent about two hours installing it, after I finished I realized the lights on the bell are not turning white instead they are red and the bell is not functioning! After I investigated the issue I learned that my house transformer is 8 volt (majority of houses have this type of transformer) Arlo bell needs a newer type of transformer that emits 16 volt! I spent another three hours looking for my house transformer to change it and I couldn’t find it! I ended up returning the bell to Costco.
    The manufacturer should have built two channels in the bell one with 8 volt and another with 16 volt, so many people have the same problem i had but they were able to locate their transformer and changed it to make the bell work, I guess I wasn’t lucky enough 🤷🏻‍♂️
    I would give this product 1 star out of 5
