    Super novice user here and this was very easy to follow! The only thing that kept tripping me up was making a distinction from which element is being looked at on screen in fusion (the little dots below each), but after watching your video a couple times, I started to get the hang of it. Thank you for taking the time to put this in video form!

      An effective (although not as impressive) version of this effect can be done by placing the background colour/ image over the word(s) you want to type out and at ever frame or 2 frames or however long you want the duration between letter inputs to be, just move the image away to reveal one letter. Another image can be used for the cursor which you can cut a piece from every frame (or again, however long you want it to be) to show flashing.

    I was following all the steps but something went wrong. When you were changing the frames and keyframes you didn't say to change the keyframes each time(click the little diamond thing on the side). I'm a beginner on Davinci Resolve so I was pretty confused. Luckily I spotted that though. This effect worked beautifully. Thank you

    I've only been delving into Davinci Resolve for less than 6 months, I felt the tutorial is aimed at those who are already experienced in Davinci. For example, you selected Element 3. What is that? What are the Elements? Why did you select Element 3 out all the other elements? Why did you select the Follower? In your tutorials, are you able to explain more why you're doing things, so we can gain an understanding of what each step involves. I feel you are going through the steps with no explanation. What it means is that I can reproduce the effect by following the steps in your video, but I have not gained understanding of e.g. the Elements option, so I cannot use that with understanding in my own projects.

    • @DigitalVectorStudios

      RT thanks for watching. The Text+ node has a lot of hidden power and flexibility. The shading (paintbrush icon) has 8 available elements. 1 is the text, two is a stroke (Red outline), 3 is the black shadow, 4 is a blue border and 5-8 can be used for anything you want. Actually all 8 can, but 1-4 are presets that are already set up to work faster. I use element 1 for the text and the modifier in element one to show the per character animation of typing each character. I use element 3 to simulate the cursor animation as the characters are revealed. I check off the “enabled” boxes on these elements because I do not want to add addition effects with the modifiers, I only want to animate the text settings that were made in the original text with the modifier. The follower is pretty advanced and as you can see there is not much information out there. Think of it as a way to quickly animate text by animating only one character, then allowing the Fusion modifier to repeat the animation for the remaining characters.

    • @DigitalVectorStudios
      @DigitalVectorStudios  Před 2 lety +1

      It could be animated using fusion, but the quickest way is to make a cut at the place you want to end the backspacing (in the Edit page) Select the clip you just cut. Hold down alt+slide the clip to the right on the timeline to make a duplicate. Press Control+R to open retime controls. Click the controller on the bottom middle of the clip. You may need to zoom in to see it. Select reverse 100%. You could also add additional speed control markers to mix up the speed to make it look more realistic. I have some videos on my channel on reversing video and retime control that may help. This would be quicker than messing with the follower tools.

      Something when wrong during animating. When it’s fading out there is a keyframe missing on the opacity. I’m not sure what is happening with your comp on multiple blocks. Probably best if you watched this video czcams.com/video/TjIpkIYrS54/video.html. Then downloaded the templates and installed. Take a look at my nodes in the template and you should be able to compare to yours and find the issue.

Put an image or video layer on a track under (track 1) the composition created in the first step of the video. (Move comp up to track 2). Thanks so much for this video! I have been able to do this for an outro with your guidance, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to add another line of text that says ''thanks for watching,'' under my outro name text.... how would I add another line with the same effect starting right after the original above line? How do you add text that comes in seamlessly after this one has played?

    • @DigitalVectorStudios
      @DigitalVectorStudios  Před 4 lety +1

      Sounds like a wonderful outro. This should be fairly easy to set up. Go to the Edit Page. Make a copy of the fusion composition clip you created to make the first line of text (the rectangular block in the timeline). On anther track, paste the duplicate fusion composition clip. Slide the copied fusion clip to the right of the original fusion clip so it’s start point is positioned at the end of the original clip. Move the playhead over the copied clip and left-click on the clip to select it, now go to the fusion page. Select the text node and make sure the inspector is on. Change the text. You may need to go to the follower modifier settings to change to timing if you second line is longer or shorter than the first line of text. Move the position of the second line below the first line of text using the method shown in the video. You will not see the first line of text yet so just guess. Now the finishing changes. Go back to the Edit Page. Move the playhead over the original clip. Grab the right edge of the fusion composition block and drag it match the right side of the copied block.
      Now you will need to know your total frames. Take the timeline of the right side of your copied fusion comp. say your at 1:00:15:06 and comp is at 30 frames per second. 15x30=450+06 so frame 456.
      Open the Fusion Page. Open the the keyframes editor (upper right). Click the zoom to fit button. Slide the right edge of all the bars over to at least the frame calculated above (in the example above it is 456).
      Wrap up. In line 1 you’ll want to turn off the blinking cursor. Just delete that node. Adjust the timing of the two fusion comp clips in the timeline until you like it. Go back and get the text position the way you want it.
      One comp can be used for everything as well. Just type all the text in a longer comp and adjust the follower timing as needed. The cursor will need to be positioned at the end. Good luck 👍

    Oh, that's great, thank you! But when I put this animation over another clip in the timline there is no transparency?
    And what is the easiest way to change the color of the complete animation?

    • @DigitalVectorStudios
      @DigitalVectorStudios  Před 5 lety +2

      There are a few ways to do that depending on the footage you want to overlay. The easiest solution in this case is to just disconnect the background node from the first merge node. The black background was added to show off the text effect, but is not needed. In the edit window, if you move the fusion composition up to video track 2, anything you place in track 1 under it will show through the transparent area.

      Check a couple of settings. First, make sure the composition length is long enough. I set mine for just over 10 seconds. Depending on how much text you are animating, you might want to go longer. In the follower settings, make sure all character are selected. You can animate between the start and end or between each character. You will need to set the appropriate timing depending on the length of the phrase. Again you will run out of composition length if the first suggestion is not followed. Give that a try. You may have changed some other settings, so let me know how it goes.

    How would you go about synchronizing the typing to audio vocals?

    • @DigitalVectorStudios
      @DigitalVectorStudios  Před 4 lety +1

      I typically use the song’s bpm. Then in Resolve use the fps setting to sync. For example, a song with 80 bpm, I would focus on significant keyframes every other beat or alternatively, every 4th beat. If a 30 fps frame rate video is used, there will be 1800 frames per minute. On every other beat, I’m looking at 40 possible key frame points each minute or 20 possible key frame points each minute at every 4th beat. I’ll go with 20 here (one key point - make something happen in the video every 3 seconds). So 30 fps x 3 = 90 frames.
      If you do not have as much control, try using the audio wave forms to set markers where you want key points to occur in your animation. For the typing you are setting the number of frames between each character or overall frames for the whole phrase so it will work.

Don’t add the background or merge nodes. In the upper right corner of the video views you will three dots arranged in a horizontal line. That is the viewing menu. Click on it and choose Checker Underlay. When you see the checker underlay, you know you have transparent video. Do that for both video view windows. Now when you drag the text node to the left view window you will see it is a transparent background. 3. Finish the steps- you can make the blinking cursor and merge node to add it to the text as show in the video. 4. Don’t add the scanlines. - they can be added, but it will be difficult to explain in these comments, so just remove it. 5. Go back to the Edit Page and add your video to Video Track 1.
