  • Climb aboard Frisco #1630 as we take you on a special cab ride in the locomotive. #1630 is a Russian decapod built in 1918 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and she currently resides at the Illinois Railway Museum located in Union, IL. The day this video was filmed, July 5th, 2015, the crew switched out the locomotive's whistle with a NYC six chime whistle from the museum's collection. The weather was perfect and #1630 and her crew put on a superb show. This is part I of II. We hope you enjoy the video and, as always, thanks for watching The Steam Channel! A special thank you to the steam crew at IRM for making this video possible.

    Great video! Well done on the editing. Last time I saw this locomotive was back in 2008 when they had it in the shops. Hopefully should be making it out this year to see her. Only an hour from my house. I'll tell you, there's nothing better than seeing a classic, coal-fired steam locomotive operating completely under its own power in 2015.

    How were you able to get a Cab Ride in the 1630, I always wanted to do that? :) 1630 was the first steam that I ever saw in operation back in the 1990's when I was a kid and I live only an half an hour away from what I think is the best Railway museum in the World. Glad to have her back in steam again.

    That's absolutely RIDICULOUS, they won't allow you to utilize the stoker! We use the stoker on NKP 587 during the 11 miles to the state fair! That enables us to utilize fireman and not wear them out!

    • @MackeyBigBoy4014
      @MackeyBigBoy4014 Před 3 lety

      Well for starters, I’ve been told that the stoker doesn’t even work, and two, the Fair Trainswas much more of a farther distance than the five mile track the IRM has, so hand-firing it is more useful.

    I have a question: I am searching for a supplier of leather fireman's visored caps much like the one 1630's fireman is wearing in the video. is there a current maker, or will I have to find a vintage one by stroke of luck?

    • @nigelbennett6676
      @nigelbennett6676 Před 7 lety +1

      It is not really leather. The cap is what is called a grease top. Very useful for UK work where you often oil from a pit underneath. Oil dripping onto the top and visor gives a nice shine!!. Not easy to get in the US but readily available in the UK as there is a huge preserved steam industry.

    Where is the Frisco 6 chime that 1630 used to have it?

  • @kyovalye5942
    @kyovalye5942 Před 6 lety

    Is it just me, or does this loco have an autostoker? My guess is it did but it isn't in use much if ever, the guts might have been pulled out. The sort of tube leading up to the firedoor and the hole just below it make me think so.

    • @TheSteamChannel
      @TheSteamChannel  Před 6 lety

      Jonathan Pearson it did but it is not in use

    • @LandNfan
      @LandNfan Před 5 lety

      The cluster of 5 valves just to the left of the butterfly doors control the steam jets that distribute to coal across the fire. One reason they may not be using the stoker is that their coal is in pieces a bit larger than usually fed through a stoker.

      Yes. Much of the time it is easy to talk when you are in the depot but you always have to be giving first priority to whatever she is doing!. She's a "bit" bigger than Prince but in some ways easier because she is seldom really working with the load and distance at IRM.

      I like the UK steam locomotive driver/fireman look (well the solid blue overalls, not the purple ones). I'd rather wear the UK steam locomotive driver/fireman clothing (but blue overalls in lieu of purple overalls) if I were a crew member on an American steam locomotive than the American blue-and-white hickory stripe look any day, and I'm American.
