    You are obviously an experienced guitar player. What you are not is a bass player. The only deception here is that the second row of posts are not magnets. The pickups do cancel hum, do they not? The fact that they have a volume that did not meet your expectations is really due to the fact you did not try one out in advance. This is an entry level instrument, built to a price point, as you are well aware. BTW, I do not own a SE bass, but have played several examples. I just feel you are being overly critical of an instrument that you have no experience with.

    I AM a bass player. And I just got this bass as a present. For the money, it is an exceptional bass. I saw this video and having now played it for a few months have come back to this video to call out this dishonest review. First of all there are several "humbucker" designs/wiring's and this one is one of them. Just because it is not the one you were thinking of doesn't make it dishonest. He even says, "not a full humbucker" but a humbucker all the same. Not only do these pickups sound great (when you have the right settings for a passive bass). All passive basses are "weak" compared to an active bass simply because you need to have a pre-amp on a Passive bass to have an Oranges to oranges comparison. Kudos to PRS for the engineering that gives this good an instrument at that price point.

    Great video! Really interesting how they're representing these. I would think that wiring a single coil in series with a dummy coil would reduce the output for sure. Well done!

    Your disapointment is a nice surprise for me and sparkled my interest in trying out this bass. I prefer single coils and in my case, single coil+dummy coil sounds very interesting to me. I do find it misleading from their part. But the moral of the story, instruments bought sight unseen is always a huge gamble.

    Thanks for sharing your review and mods. I installed the Nordstrand pickups and they really sound great. Question:The Prs pots are very limited as they only seem effective when dimed out. Did you have to do any mods to install the aftermarket pots and what brand did you purchase? Thanks again for sharing.

    • @GregTuckerKellogg
      @GregTuckerKellogg  Před 9 měsíci

      @@LouisC059 oh yes, I forgot. I did have to embiggen the holes for the shafts on the better pots. I was worried about chipping the finish, but I worked carefully and used some masking tape before drilling them out and it wasn't a problem. But it led to another issue, which is that the pot shaft diameter was larger and I replaced the knobs to fit.
      I didn't need to do any routing, but if you wanted to add a preamp you might need to.

    Thanks for pointing this out. I was thinking of getting this bass but now I'm not sure. This whole thing just confuses me though. It seems like it would be more effort to have two different pole pieces rather than having them all be magnetic. Genuinely can't figure out why they would do this

    • @GregTuckerKellogg

    Technically, it is still a humbucker (if the dummy coil does cancel hum) but one without a wide aperture for the pickup. 😊
    But seriously, the bass has its own signature sound. A phat tone with some warmth to it. It’s different but very workable.
    Well, some people like the sound of say a Gibson EB bass.

      As your your question, I'm a bass newbie, so I'm probably not the best to ask. :-) But the Kestrel takes standard-sized jazz pickups, if I recall, and I can tell you I'm insanely happy with the Nordstrands. Nordstrand makes pickups in standard jazz pickup size.

    • @seanbrennan6669
      @seanbrennan6669 Před rokem

      I have a 2018 Kestrel. Excellent overall build quality and playability. Two things I improved.
      Replaced pups with Sonic brand (hand wound, one man shop). I choose the noiseless Js. Not the cheapest pups out there, but worth it. Best $ I have ever spent on a bass mod. The noiseless is especially nice for running neck only P tones.
      Second easy and CHEAP improvement was a light knock down of the gloss finish on back of neck. 15 minutes with scotch brite type material my luthier had. The original wasn’t super sticky, but the feel after the knockdown is a game changer. So much better.

  • @davebayer9289

    Thank you so much Greg for the insight on the pick-ups. I too like the PRS brand as I have a 6 string that I love to play, it's very good quality and workmanship for a SE brand. I have a Fender American P-Bass, and a Jackson X Spectra IV with true humbuckers. I played this PRS at my LGS through a Rumble 500. It sounded good as a play alone instrument so when I got home I ran it through my Rumble 800 HD with my 2x10 cab, hooked up my iPad to play along with some songs, (thats how I practice) and plugged in my new PRS Kingfisher. Boy was I disappointed. Very week pick-ups, I could hardly hear myself come through the mix with the music playing. My Jackson (on Passive), and my Fender P-Bass cut through with no difficulty at 60-70% volume. My new PRS I can hardly even hear at 100% volume.
    I did see your comments on the TalkBass forums and I will also look into replacing these with the Big Splits. I think PRS has dropped the ball on this one.

      I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks for sharing your experience.
      One lesson for me from this is to be more skeptical of gear reviews on CZcams. Some individuals might be sponsored or given the instrument to review, and they aren't likely to say anything critical. Magazine reviews on CZcams are rarely willing to include critical comments because they need to maintain their relationships with the makers. Sellers that have CZcams channels are even worse because they need to sell instruments. And sometimes it's more subtle. @JonIsJustTooLoud is a great guitar player and seems like an absolutely sweet guy, and he's very careful to describe the exact details of his setup when demos instruments. I love his channel. But local Singapore stores lend him instruments to review, so there's a symbiotic relationship between him and the stores. In addition, I think Jon's just too *nice* to make critical remarks. It doesn't seem to be in his nature.

    The Grainger basses are extremely expensive. So a great company like PRS can't hit a price point in between that makes them money and produces a good product? I get being angry that you bought something blind with no knowledge and getting disappointed in your choice but people really need to look inward more when they complain about disappointment. I was not expecting anything and picked up one of these used and was stunned that there was a bad review out there that convinced the idiot who sold this to me to sell lol.
    He was Also a new bass player so he knew nothing and trusted this review and I saved $800 Canadian dollars off buying new. It’s a passive bass, it’s going to have lower output. This is so easily solved by tweaking your amp settings or adding a pedal which almost every modern musician is fully capable of doing. For any beginner bassist out there who might do something stupid after buying one of these and watching this video please don’t listen to a review and use your ears and brain. Turn your amp up. Add some gain. Change the eq. Most bassists complain about output level drops when going from active to passive basses for different sounds. Now you can change basses and not have to worry about output drops but still get an aggressive tone. Pickups are just guitar microphones and people overthink this stuff a lot. Most people consider low output pickups the crème de la crème for tone because they can be shaped the easiest.

      Thanks for your comment, and congratulations on picking up a used Kingfisher. It's amusing to think that the person who sold it to you might have been influenced by this review, which I never intended as a "bad review". I quite like the bass, still play it, and learned a lot through the process of the mods. The *way* I purchased it was silly, and I wouldn't recommend that to anyone, but that's entirely my responsibility. I don't regret getting it (and don't regret the mods). It's been a great learning experience.
      I should make it clear that I wasn't angry. I simply didn't like the pickups and and was disappointed with how PRS represented them, which I thought was dishonest. It was, and I thought it was worth the effort to give a review that represented the situation honestly.

      It's crazy, right? Gretch did something similar, and like PRS it's an entirely pointless misrepresentation. At least in the case of PRS they have a dummy coil, which provides some hum cancellation, but their misrepresentation is exploiting the ignorance of new players.

  • @BrantleyAllen
    @BrantleyAllen Před rokem +1

    Let me get this straight.
    You aren't a bass player. You've never played a bass before. You have nothing with which to compare this bass. You thought the pickup were "weak" so you dismantled the bass to determine there are one set of pole pieces but 2 coils and replaced the pickups with something you thought would be "better." Right?
    Did you make before and after recordings to show the improvement in output? Is output the determining factor in a good bass tone?
    Watching the PRS Kingfisher PRS demo, the bass sounded great. Your tone with the upgraded pickups is not.
    Are you sure you 'improved' the sound? I don't think so.
    I'm a bass player that has recently started playing more guitar. I've fixed one. I've built one (parts caster). I've learned to do basic fret work. I've also learned I can't make a decent guitar tone to save my life.
    I think you mirror that last sentence. You have no idea how make a tone, attempted to reverse engineer a bass and 'improve' it with absolutely no knowledge on the subject. You also accuse PRS of being "dishonest." Are they being dishonest by added a dummy coil to create a humbucker instead of ( by Fender's method) combining two pickups to create the humbucking?
    No.
    I wish you luck on your bass journey.
    I look forward to hearing bass tones you record.

    • @GregTuckerKellogg
      @GregTuckerKellogg  Před rokem +1

      Partly yes, partly no. I made the disclaimer about my newness to the instrument openly, but I didn't dismantle the bass *because* I thought the pickups were weak. I was disappointed with the pickups, and then I looked through TalkBass and other discussion forums and saw that experienced bass players were also disappointed with them. There was discussion on TalkBass about the pseudo-humbucker design, but unlike the Gretch that started the discussion, nobody had taken apart the PRS pickups. So I decided it would be a fun project.
      And yes, I think PRS is being dishonest. Perhaps you'd prefer a differnt word, such as "evasive" or "cagey". Fair enough. What they aren't being is transparent, and that to me is a huge disappointment, because PRS (led by example from Paul) has generally been *very* transparent about their designs and process. It's one of the many things I admire about the company.
      I regret not doing a before-after comparison, but I hadn't planned to make a video until after the new pickups were in the bass.
