Lauren sings with an extremely clear voice and precise pronunciation, but you haven't yet noticed what it's about. Angelina used the type of phrasing often found in jazz that places more emphasis on the harmony as a whole, while omitting syllables or parts of words if they disrupt the harmony. That's why some reactors say Angelina sings "uncleanly".
Nevertheless, with her version you understood what this actually is - a dialogue with God.
It often happens people saying - I know the song inside out, but today in Angelina's performance I fully understood the lyrics for the first time. There must be something special about this girl ;-)
This was recorded a month or two before Angelina's sixteenth birthday. There's also a great mash up video with Lauren singing a section and then Angelina singing the next. Worth looking for.

You’re right, there’s a lot of ways to take this song. But the barefoot princess came out and dedicated this to the fans of how she feels about them/her angels. The barefoot, princess has never covered a song, she has remade them, that’s what she does.
From this concert "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is one of my favorite Angelina songs. Find the one where she is dressed as per this video (same set) and has some live musicians behind her. The musicians are all famous blues and jazz players for people like Frank Sinatra and Eta James. Everything about it is perfect. Nice reaction thanks.
I have watched this Angelina version maybe 200 times.. I just can't get bored with this. When Angelina sang this song in her Christmas concert she said that this song is devoted for all her great fans who have said so nice things about her so in this context the lyrics can be understood also as her appreciation of all her fans. Of course the original song is meant to be spiritual and maybe Angelina has meant her performance to be equivocal, I'm not sure..
The first time I ever heard this song is in this performance, which I watched on the pay-per-view live stream of her Christmas concert. I was turned off by the first two verses (especially the second one) where she says "In you I find my worth. In you I find my identity." She had always seemed so strong, secure in who she is and what she wants. It's inconcievable that she would be so dependent on the admiration and validation of complete strangers on YT. Then, later in the song she reveals that she is talking to God, and I get it. Not being religious myself, I am yet very aware of how believers feel about their relationship to their God. Only in that context does this performance make any sense for a self-confident, mature person, like Angelina. Although she dedicates the performance to her fans, it's clear she does not rely on them for self-validation. If she were that weak, she could never have become as successful as she is.

Rob Christie Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group Manhattan Beach, California is Angelina's A&R person, and he has been working with AJ since she signed with the largest record company in the world at the age of 14, three years ago. Rob was the MC of AJ Christmas Show that aired Dec 23, of 21. AJ’s Christmas Show that live-streamed on Dec 23 of 21 had some of the most important musicians of our time: Frank Sinatra's drummer for 6 years, and sun in-law of the late Henry Mancini, Greg Field has won 9 Grammys, and the bass player, Chuck Berghofer who also played for Sinatra for 6 years, and toured with Barbara Streisand, accompanied AJ on her Christmas Show, and they stated that she had the "storytelling ability of the greats, Streisand, Fitzgerald, Vaughan, including Sinatra, to name a few. The main pianist, a five-time nominated for Grammys, Shelly Berg, stated in all his years working with the greatest vocalist, he had never encountered a talent like AJ. Did I forget to mention Jimmy Z, the famous Sax Player who worked with Rod Steward, Etta James, the Eurythmics, and Doctor Dre, was part of the band for the show? Jimmy stated that AJ was the best he has ever played for. Rob Christie Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group Manhattan Beach, California played the guitar, and was the MC of the show. (I can't list the complete backgrounds on all the band members because it would take several pages to do them justice.) Angelina stated that she would rather perform than take a breath, and she has never been forced to perform, it has been her decision. ©

Nice to see you again! Yes , this is from 2021, and Angelina was 15 years old. In the lyrics "God" is only mentioned once, so you're easily forgiven for missing out on it during your first listen. And this song could easily have been about a relationship with another human being as well, as the emotions are pretty much the same. A friend or a partner can just as easily empower you with words, as what God will "tell" you. As a non Christian myself, I'd say actually physically hearing the words will bring AT LEAST as much healing. I just have to tell you that 2 days ago a great documentary about Angelina and her career so far was released, called "Angelina - 10 Years In The Making". The executive producer is her mother, Sara Astar. If you want to get to know Angelina even better than you already do, I definitely recommend that one, it is absolutely beautiful. You will definitely learn that there is more to Angelina than just her voice 🙂

The 1st time I heard this song was this performance during her Christmas concert a few weeks before she turned 16. I wasn't familiar with Lauren, so I immediately went to listen to the original, as I always do. To me, Lauren's original sounds to me like a really good "cover" of the song since Angelina is just on another level, IMO.
I would highly recommend reacting to the interviews from the Christmas concert. Astounding collection of 1st class, accomplished and award winning artist giving there intense praise for Angelinas ability to communicate through her music. This song is a great example.
I was sitting in front of the PC at this online Christmas concert and when she sang this song I couldn't see the screen anymore because of the tears. I knew Lauren Diagle's song but when I heard Angelina's version all the dams broke. Her voice made me emotional broadside hit (Google Translate)

At the very end of the Christmas Show on December 23, 2021, (she was 15 and would turn 16 on January 10, 2022). Angelina performed "You Say", and she stated this is for my fans. I lost my breath, and I got chills, and the tears began to fall. I am an atheist, and my faith is in mankind, and the universe, the antithesis of chaos, not some mythical being. I believe the song "You Say" is referring to Angelina's Angles, those that support her in her quest. There must be a supernatural place in the universe, how else can we explain this being called Angelina Jordan. As AJ's Angels, we don't need to see the black and white to color transition, AJ has a SIGNATURE VOICE that no one on earth can duplicate. ©
