    I love how differently they all look, despite being from roughly the same era. And even cars of the same vintaghe can look vastly different.
    Compared to today, that´s a really cool thing I think.

      Hi, they look different because they' re from different eras, No-Ground effect 70s, Ground effect from late 70s and early 80s and No-Ground effect from middle 80s (like the green Tyrrel Benetton). They represents the most beautiful F1 age!!!

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed Před rokem +3

      @@JohnSmith-rw8uh - Not a fair comparison you say? Here are the facts on the Ford Cosworth DFV engine. The following teams used this engine - Lotus, McLaren, Matra, Brabham, March, Surtees, Tyrrell, Hesketh, Lola, Williams, Penske, Wolf and Ligier. This engine won EVERY World Championship race in 1969 and 1973. Total F1 wins by the DFV - 155, a record that will never be broken. 👍🏎🏁🏆🏅

      @@Loulovesspeed so Ferrari were outnumbered how many to 1 some years? get your hand off it mate. the only teams not running cosworths some years were Ferrari, Renault, Matra and Alfa Romeo. but this was on and off. BTW Williams , Tyrrel and Brabham were all caught cheating whiltst using DFV

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed Před rokem +5

      @@JohnSmith-rw8uh - I have no idea what point you are trying to make? I simply said that the Cosworth DFV is the most successful engine in F1 history. It has nothing at all to do with being a "fair comparison", it's a fact. No other engine in F1 has 155 victories, it's simple math! If a Ferrari engine had held that distinction rather than the Ford DFV, would it be unfair in your eyes? Also, any team caught cheating is not the responsibility of the engine maker, which makes that part of your comment completely irrelevant. The Ford Cosworth engines sold to all teams were the exact same engines. Let me ask you this, do you know why they sold so many DFVs to various teams? I'll tell you why, because it was originally built for Lotus only through discussions with Colin Chapman, Cosworth and Ford, and it was so completely dominant from the start that they were concerned that it would possibly have a negative affect on other F1 teams . That is when it was decided to sell the engine to any team interested in it. BTW, Ferrari could have done the same thing but he chose to keep his engines in his cars only. F1 teams that used engines made by other companies wanted one that would give them the best chance of winning. The DFV was the answer to them, actually making it more fair to them than if it was exclusively a Lotus power plant!

In 1977 I moved to Canada and a few years later (1980?) started following it again, but by this time it was the turbo era and the the V12's and 10's followed etc. The DFV must be the most successful of all race engines. During the 2015 Coppa Intereuropa historic weekend at Monza Circuit I recorded the beautiful F1 cars that race in the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship. All the F1s which took part in this event were powered by the legendary Ford-Cosworth DFV 3.0 V8 engine. Among the cars you can see some Lotus (Lotus 79, Lotus 91, Lotus 80), some Williams (FW07 and FW08), a Brabham BT49C, Tyrrell (Tyrrell 001, 010, 011,012), a Merzario F1A3, a Surtees TS9B, some Arrows, Shadow and something more.

      This suggestion isn't as crazy as it sounds. Ban turbos (again) and restrict engines so they basically had to run modern versions of the DFV or similar. And make the sound a criterion - it's a big part of the reason we love F1, and that aspect is largely missing from today's cars. Put inlet restrictors on them to limit horsepower (like some other categories do) so then engine power as an advantage is taken out of the equation. A level playing field. Everyone can make their own engines if they want, but they can't produce more than, say, 600hp. That could work.

      +mstblue Yes, the Cosworth variant used with Indy Cars was the DFX turbocharged model. The 3 liter petrol F1 engine was reduced in displacement to I believe a 2.65 liter size to comply with the turbocharge engine displacement limit, and was converted to run on methanol. It was one of the few cases where a successful F1 engine was adapted to Indy (Champ car) racing. It won at the Indy 500 in 1977, and dominated Indy for the next 10 years.Then add to the mix the DFV engine won at the LeMans 24 hour race for sports cars in the 1970s . . . this Cosworth engine has to go down in motorsport history as the most successful internal combustion engine ever designed and built.
