Trying the WORLD's FIRST HAMBURGER! Is Louis' Lunch Worth The Hype?

- While New Haven is home to many famous restaurants, particularly the legendary New Haven pizza scene, Louis' Lunch may be the most famous restaurant in New Haven. Just steps from the uber prestigious Yale University, Louis' Lunch is the first hamburger restaurant in the world, or at least they claim to be. There are many competing claims for who invented the hamburger and we will just have to take Louis' Lunch word for it in this case.
Now whether or not Louis' Lunch invented the hamburger or not, it is still one of the most famous restaurants in New Haven and therefore one of the most famous restaurants in Connecticut and one that is also somewhat commutable from New York City. We drove up from New Jersey to answer the question of is Louis' Lunch good or is Louis' Lunch overrated? Or are the open flame cooked Louis' Lunch burgers truly divine and a work of art?
We semi road-tripped to New Haven to check out this New Haven haunt and one of the best restaurants near Yale University. Will it live up to the hype?

This was the 100th episode of UA Eats! The timing couldn't be better right before Thanksgiving. Thank you all so much for watching my videos and the role you all play in growing the channel. I'm a one-man show so it can be hectic at times, but your support makes it all worth it. Happy Thanksgiving!
Congrats and Happy Thanksgiving!
Congratulations! keep up the good work. I love your videos so thanks for making them.
Awesome work UA!!
We are all happy for you! ❤️💪🏻
You're welcome
I asked my friend to describe the burger. He said “it definitely tastes like it was someone’s first time making a burger” 😂
It looks like something a young daughter cooks up for Father's Day. Then you toss it in the trash when she isn't looking because you don't want the green apple splatters. 😂
its the best burger on the planet, never had anything even close to as good
@johanlenox I'm sorry but don't give up hope.

That is oddly the perfect description. Imagine how much of a game changer this was during the time though. To look at the smash style burgers with brisket/chuck/sirloin blends with toasted potato buns & the sweet/acidic sauce styles to cut through the inherent richness that burgers naturally have, really showcases how much we have elevated the burger game. I’m curious how they source and handle the beef 🤷🏻♂️
While this may be true I don’t trust the place that insists on crap bread and cheese whiz.
"So fresh that it hasn't been cooked much"
I almost spit my coffee out laughing.
Looks like they changed the cooking process. They used to put the onion on the patty, then close the basket and cook. That definitely added flavor. The onion was charred and the onion flavor cooked into the burger. I was never served a burger that raw there. I haven't been there in years. I think you may have saved me a trip. One vital piece of information you forgot to mention.... No ketchup, or any condiments in the building period.
Place sounds like it's all hype and the food is "eh"
To bad they no longer cook with the onions on the burger. That sounds pretty good and would get me to go there. But I'm not impressed by what I saw here. Sub par food sold under the guise of being the creator of the hamburger.

People always say that this is the first place to serve a hamburger. But I rarely hear people say this is one of the best places to get a burger. I think more people go for the history, and the fact that they were the first burger place.
Kind of reminds me of Pat's steaks in Philadelphia. Yeah it's neat to go since it's the first of it's kind but the cheesesteak is meh. Only tourists and drunk people at 2:AM go there. The deli up the road from me makes a better steak sandwich than Pat's.

It’s a cool historical place - but you can see how this place inspired other burger places. Someone eventually went to Louis Lunch and thought “I can do that better” and then did just that.

Watching other videos reviewing this place makes it pretty clear -- it is not good. But obviously they still have people flowing in consistently, to eat something which looks like something a kid would make after school while waiting for a ThunderCats episode circa 1987. Burger patty on white toast with cheez whiz.
That hamburger looked more raw than the cheeseburger for sure. I don't think I could have eaten that one.

And I’m sure back in early 1900’s it was da bomb!!
Pretty sure it's about the whole experience. I can't imagine the outrage that it would cause if a modern restaurant would make this exact same burger and put it on their menus. It looks like a ''burger'' that I would make, back in the my college days, with whatever leftovers I have in my fridge on a sunday night lol

Lmfao. You're correct. It was cool to go there, and it really wasn't terrible. I'm a Chef and I knew what I was in for. Definitely not very good, but it was different. What a great gig tho, for real they ain't gotta do shit except load the extremely small amount of their signature cast iron, vertical grilles. Definitely -meh-
@@Samurai78420They earned not having to do shit but load those grilles by popularizing an American iconic sandwich. Same as Anchor Bar with buffalo wings, or Prince’s with Nashville Hot Chicken. Most Chefs can only dream about coming up with an original dish that others imitate.
Nice UA! When I was younger, a good friend moved from Queens to New Haven. So, I've had the opportunity to enjoy all of the City's offerings. Louis Lunch is epic, and because of it I'll often make burgers at home on toast. Definitely an old school classic that can't be denied!
A century-old burger for your 100 episodes is so perfect. Congrats UA!
I ate there about 50 years ago when I was looking for a job in New Haven. I stumbled upon Louis Lunch and ordered a cheeseburger. When I asked for ketchup, I was given the condescending line “we don’t allow ketchup in the lunchroom” which kind of sent me back on my heels. Anyway, I had the burger and because of that experience, I kind of didn’t want to like,it but to be honest, it was very good. I really enjoyed it. The lack of ketchup really brought out the flavor of the meat.
No. It would have been better with ketchup.
Great content as always UA!

Congrats on the 100th episode! Yes, it was recognized by the library of congress as the official "birthplace" of the hamburger sandwich but the sandwich was first officially (I once read something about it being created at the Erie County Fair in NY but that was heavily disputed) invented at the Seymour Fair by Charlie Nagreen in Wisconsin in 1885. Thanks for another great video. (I don't mind you mentioning the Cheesecake Factory - my son loves the place lol).
Great videos keep it up man. Ive moved to new jersey around 2019 and I look forward to seeing more reviews in New Jersey.
If “Simple Jack” made a burger, this would be the result. It’s only a few greasy bell peppers away from Eddie Murphy’s mom’s “house burger.” 👀

I enjoyed your video. I appreciate the honesty and the tempered criticism of this visit. Bourdain NEVER liked going to where dishes originated I think this was a mistake by him. Good job venturing out and giving your viewers more diverse content to peruse. Awesome job man keep it up!!!

The irony is that most likely, if any other restaurant had this on their menu where patrons could see it, they probably would sell few if any at all. It just looks like the most unappetizing “sandwich” that I have ever seen.
That place has deep roots and traditions that keep it from making changes
@@NoahEats
I can certainly understand the nostalgia, but that has to be the only thing that keeps that place going. I mean how good can it really be, especially for $8.
It reminds me of something that someone throws together at home when they have just about run out of everything to eat.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
The original flame-broiled burger? It looks like the size of the patty could be thinner to lower the wait times (maybe sacrilege?), and increase the heat to get really good char-grill marks. Seasoning should be on point (which it sounds like it wasn't). Keep the simple menu and prices, just concentrate on a tasty consistently simple burger and just keep the line moving.
Congrats UA on the 100th video! Since you're in CT maybe you can go to Mystic Pizza. We enjoyed the spaghetti and meatball pizza.

after seeing that burger served like that you can have that place.......
When it comes to large menus, they are almost always a bad idea. Cheesecake factory is in aberration. It's large menu has made it massively successful. They have a very particular niche, where they put themselves in malls, and then provide options for every member of the family or the shopping group. I'm not sure how they make it work, but I think a lot of it has to do with the massive volume of customers that move through the restaurant

I've eaten at Louis' several times and it's an interesting place. The cheese is cheez whiz and the only condiments are tomato and raw onion. No fries, just chips. The burger is the star. I've asked for the burger to be a bit more done, to medium and if it's not crazy busy, they will do it.
I never ate there myself but I've seen videos of the place from the past. I could of swore I saw under the sign at one point "if you would like your burger well done please let us know when ordering" or something like that. I guess in order to keep things moving when busy they just cook all the burgers to the same doneness to keep them from slowing down.
@billymarino4452 yeah if you look at the sign you can see they've now taped over that part
