Cuenca and Montechristi are town names and not weave names so it can be a bit confusing. What we're comparing are the properties of the mat weave (brisa) vs the herringbone weave (llano). Both can be woven to a high standard but the most expensive hats are nearly always woven in herringbone pattern because you need twice as many threads per square inch and four times as many hours of labor. This is obviously reflected in the price. Such is the nature of 4/4 vs 2/2 weave. It doesn't mean that a 2/2 hat can't be good but it's always less labor intensive.

This is the best video I’ve seen on looking at these hats and causes me to never want to but online. I’ll want to see the hat before I buy it.

Sin discriminar el sombrero de Montecristi es más elegante y fino.

If the maximum resolution of your CZcams video is 240p we can’t really see much of a difference. 360 or even better 480 would be great. :-)

This video is 18 Years old and was the best i could do at the time, perhaps it is time to do another more modern video :) But the idea still remains it still shows you how to determine the difference between the types of Ecuador panama hats.

PanamaHatsDirect I’m terribly sorry! I didn’t realize that this video is already 18 years old! You’re forgiven! ;-)
If I was you, I’d do a short video on all the hats you make, including someone wearing the hat, so people can see what they look like. :-)

I have a Cuenca hat in "fino" weave, and I held it up to a bright light just now. It has a tighter and more symmetrical weave than your Montecristi. So the name of the town in which a hat is woven clearly is not enough to indicate the type of weave. The Cuenca company from whom I bought my hat offers at least five qualities of weave.

Montecristi hats are what have made panama hats famous. while Cuenca hats try to take the credit. they both have their uses Cuenca hats are far cheaper but don't last very long the tend to break at the pinch and fall apart far sooner then a Montecristi hat will. But if you need cheep and decent Cuenca hats work well but the high end hats are always Montecristi hats.

Don't spend your money on something that was made of straws. Get a fur felt hat - they never break and last for generations

while a bit late, i just stumbled to this video and its full of BS. high and low quality hats can be found either in cuenca as in montecristi. While montecristi DOES sell some higher quality hats, they are very very few. Cuenca does have top quality hats too. this video compares a high quality hat from montecristi with a crappy quality cuenca hat. Homero Hortega while very commercial, sells some very high quality hats. even their hats, being from cuenca, cant even be compared to that "cuenca" hat from the video.
