- Slipknot/Stone Sour guitarist, Jim Root recently caught up with the All Axess team in Australia to give us a tour of his "Fly Rig".

After 8 years this is still my favourite rig rundown, because this rig is a little different than Jim‘s regular rig.

I think it's cool to see how Jim harkens back to the classic artists... Stevie Ray and David Gilmour... Goes to show that no matter what style you play, you cant get around the masters. Great Rig!

The EMG pickups help with that. Fenders give a good, crisp sound, and that sounds cool with solid EMGs, which are ideal for any metal band.
Very cool rig. Love the vintage strats and the Orange-amps are beautiful!

IOWA was recorded with dual rectifiers and a Maxon OD-9 in front of it.
That laugh gets me every time!
Jim uses Marvin (his guitar tech) to switch his pedals on during Slipknot concerts due to the large amount of chaos that goes on, on stage. When he plays with Stone Sour he switches the pedals himself.

@wholikemychopstix His Tele's are Custom Shop Fender (USA) models ,just the Tele for his drop A tuning (Heretic Anthem,Psychocosocial,Everything Ends...) are Mexican made models just like you can buy in any good guitar shop :-)
I like the way Jim Root plays the least (traditionally) metal guitars and makes them metal.
@Apheliotes501 custom shop model. means not available. BUT you could get the rackmount crybaby, which you can modify to your preference.
My epiphone thunderbird goth is starting to get that "vintage" look, it doesn't stick out as much as on white, but it does look cool.

he used an old Laney AOD 50w Tube Lead and in Iowa he mixed it with a 5150

Mobile Website Solutions for IOWA tour he used two Mesa Dual Caliber's (one for iso-cab speaker) and some Maxon effects too
I know that for the IOWA Period, he tracked with Micks BC riches and used BC rich's mainly on tour as well. I'm basing this of a interview he and Mick had a year or two ago.
typical guitar nut: "this one is totally stock, I modded this and changed this and swapped out this". "I don't use a lot of pedals" (shows you tons of pedals he uses) hahaha cool dude

All guitars can be used for metal if you have the right hardware and settings. All of his guitars for the harder songs all carry EMGs, not to mention he uses Orange amps which are really good for distortion and his pedals over all. Plus Root is a big fan of vintage style things. He really enjoys Fenders which makes sense since his main influences are classic rock/blues players.

Those are hard to find, you can find companies do custom make them, If it's just to stay indoors (studio, home etc) try Stagg GDC-6 or Stagg GDC-8, I own the GDC-8

I don't like Slipknot and I've never heard Stone Sour. Very surprising and cool that he likes the Gilmour so much. He knew way more than I was expecting based off of his statement at the beginning, haha. Very cool.

I don't know what he uses now but I've watched 2 other rig videos for Jim in Slipknot and he used the Rivera Knucklehead Reverb. But in the masterclass he used an Orange combo.

He uses orange for slipknot now sense 2008 if im correct, there is promo shots for all hope is gone with him standing on the orange amps.

For guitar players in rock, and especialy metal styles, they are very active onstage. they like to run around and mess with the audience, headbang, free to do what ever they want. wether or not they operate their pedal bored doesnt relate at all to how good they are on guitar. having your tech do all of the switching is more efficient; seeing as that is at least half of his job on top of having to make sure amps and any rack gear you have works great. plus the tech can switch faster. there ya go
I have the Root tele and i didnt like the emgs so i put duncan jbs in there sound so much better

and NS-2 also compress the signal a little.
He has a kick ass collection; vintage guitars are the best.
I think Corey is actually (or was) quite shy. I've read his book "The Deadly Seven Sins" or whatever it was called :D and it was quite a shoking story! And I've read some "meanings" of the song lyrics and many of them are about Corey's life.
I love Jim. He's so fucking zen!! Not this big metal star!! Just down to earth. I've met him a few times and he's soo cool.
